Regimes Of Stratified Turbulence At Low Prandtl Number, Kasturi Shah, Gregory P. Chini, Colm-Cille P. Caulfield, Pascale Garaud

Quantifying transport by strongly stratified turbulence in low Prandtl number ( $Pr$ ) fluids is critically important for the development of better models for the structure and evolution of stellar and planetary interiors. Motivated by recent numerical simulations showing strongly anisotropic flows suggestive of a scale-separated dynamics, we perform a multiscale asymptotic analysis of the governing equations. We find that, in all cases, the resulting slow–fast systems take a quasilinear form. Our analysis also reveals the existence of several distinct dynamical regimes depending on the emergent buoyancy Reynolds and Péclet numbers, $Re_b = \alpha ^2 Re$ and $Pe_b = Pr …

Contrasting Responses Of Commercially Important Northwest Atlantic Bivalve Species To Ocean Acidification And Temperature Conditions, Teagan Mcmahon, Diana Thatcher, Branwen Williams, Alan Wanamaker, Brittany Jellison, Heidi Franklin, Katherine Guay, Nina M. Contrasting Responses Of Commercially Important Northwest Atlantic Bivalve Species To Ocean Acidification And Temperature Conditions, Teagan Mcmahon, Diana Thatcher, Branwen Williams, Alan Wanamaker, Brittany Jellison, Heidi Franklin, Katherine Guay, Nina M. Whitney, Joseph A. Stewart, Michèle Lavigne

Faculty Publications

Modern calcifying marine organisms face numerous environmental stressors, including overfishing, deoxygenation, increasing ocean temperatures, and ocean acidification (OA). Coastal marine settings are predicted to become warmer and more acidic in coming decades, heightening the risks of extreme events such as marine heat waves. Given these threats, it is important to understand the vulnerabilities of marine organisms that construct their shells from calcium carbonate, which are particularly susceptible to warming and decreasing pH levels. To investigate the response of four commercially relevant bivalve species to OA and differing temperatures, juvenile Mercenaria mercenaria (hard shell clams), juvenile Mya arenaria (soft shell clams), …

Observations and present knowledge of heavy ions with mass ≥ 27 in the magnetosphere are reviewed. There are four ultimate sources of these heavy ions: the solar wind (mainly high charge-state atomic ions), the ionosphere (mainly molecular ions), the atmospheric metal layers that originate ultimately from ablation of meteoroids and possibly space debris (low charge-state metallic ions and metal-rich molecular ions), and lunar surface and exosphere (low charge-state metallic and molecular ions). The upstream heavy ions (solar wind origin and lunar origin) give independent information on the ion entry routes to the magnetosphere from proton (H+) and alpha particles (He++): …

Activist Archivists: Centering Marginalized Campus Voices And Rebuilding Institutional Knowledge Through Oral History, Kai H. Uchida

Faculty Publications

The rapidly changing face of the UNH system, retirements spurred by COVID, and a challenging financial environment motivated SCA to restructure the ways that they collect and preserve institutional history. Through a two-year pilot program utilizing a new technology called TheirStory -- which hosts, records, transcribes, and stores interviews -- they began plans to record histories from University leadership, faculty, staff, alumni, and students. This poster recounts how the University Archivist shaped the UNH Oral History Project to fill in the institutional gaps of its past, considers how this project forms a microcosm of his curatorial and collection vision as …

Threshold Changes In Winter Temperature And Precipitation Drive Threshold Responses Across Nine Global Climate Zones And Associated Biomes, Alexandra R. Contosta, Kyle A. Arndt, Helen M. Baulch, Nora J. Casson, Adrian Harpold, Toni Lyn Morelli, Alexej P.K. Sirén

Globally, winter temperatures are rising, and snowpack is shrinking or disappearing entirely. Despite previous research and published literature reviews, it remains unknown whether biomes across the globe will cross important thresholds in winter temperature and precipitation that will lead to significant ecological changes. Here, we combine the widely used Köppen–Geiger climate classification system with worst-case-scenario projected changes in global monthly temperature and precipitation to illustrate how multiple climatic zones across Earth may experience shifting winter conditions by the end of this century. We then examine how these shifts may affect ecosystems within corresponding biomes. Our analysis demonstrates potential widespread losses …

Variations Of Aquaculture Structures, Operations, And Maintenance With Increasing Ocean Energy, Kevin G. Heasman, Nicholas Scott, Tyler Sclodnick, Michael Chambers, Barry Costa-Pierce, Tobias Dewhurst, Wolf Isbert, Bela H. Buck

Faculty Publications

Aquaculture in exposed and/or distant ocean sites is an emerging industry and field of study that addresses the need to improve food security along with the challenges posed by expansion of urban and coastal stakeholders into nearshore and sheltered marine waters. This move necessitates innovative solutions for this industry to thrive in high-energy environments. Some innovative research has increased understanding of the physics, hydrodynamics, and structural requirements enabling the development of appropriate systems. The blue mussel (Mytilus edulis), the New Zealand green shell or green lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus), and the Pacific Oyster (Magallana gigas), are the primary targets for …
