The Long-Term Effects Of Sexual Assault On Romantic Relationships: A Qualitative Study, Matthew Moschella Sep 2020

The Long-Term Effects Of Sexual Assault On Romantic Relationships: A Qualitative Study, Matthew Moschella

Master's Theses and Capstones

Sexual assault has immediate and long-term physical, mental, economic, and social impacts for survivors (Potter et al., 2018; Kilpatrick et al., 2007; & Sugar et al., 2004). However, there is only a limited understanding of how sexual assault impacts a survivor’s dating behaviors and romantic relationships. Therefore, this study identifies survivors’ perceptions on how sexual assault impacted their romantic relationships. Specifically, it seeks to answer (1) do some survivors avoid romantic relationships and some engage in risky dating? and (2) what types of negative responses do survivors receive when they disclose a sexual assault to a romantic partner? The current …

Good For Whom? The Framing Of Conflict In Post-9/11 America, 2001-2004, Joseph Antony Cook

Master's Theses and Capstones

This thesis explores the framing of conflict after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and more specifically, during President George W. Bush’s first term in office. Notions of American exceptionalism touched upon every facet of the nation’s response to the attacks, providing guidance, identity and resolve in the history of the Good War. The immediate tethering of Pearl Harbor and September 11 in the national discourse exemplified the foremost role that nostalgia would play in not only making sense of the attacks but devising a response to them. This thesis recovers what was lost to those destructive comforts in the …

Chronic Strain, Gendered Coping, And Health Outcomes In A Rural Context, Deirdre Ann Laselva Sep 2020

Chronic Strain, Gendered Coping, And Health Outcomes In A Rural Context, Deirdre Ann Laselva

Master's Theses and Capstones

Although there is a considerable body of literature examining mental and physical health outcomes among adolescents and adults, there is less research that focuses on emerging adulthood and how emerging adults - especially within a rural context – experience mental and physical health. Furthermore, less is known regarding how or if gender impacts the relationships between coping style and outcomes among this population. Studies historically show that women report higher rates of anxiety, depressed mood, and chronically debilitating physical illnesses than men. The differences in rates of disorders between men and women is often explained by citing traditional gender roles; …

Sociopolitical Silos: Environmental Views And The Multiplicative Effect Of Same-Party Friends, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Joel Hartter, Curt Grimm

Faculty Publications

Analysis of climate and other environmental questions on three regional survey projects conducted over 2017–2020 (9,000+ interviews) elaborate on the well-known importance of political factors by adding support for three newer propositions. First, strength of political identification predicts climate-change views within the ranks of conservatives but not within ranks of liberals, evidence that conservatives’ climate-change views are more politically determined. Second, factor analysis suggests that climate-change beliefs meet statistical criteria for being an indicator of sociopolitical identity, alongside the traditional indicators of ideology and party, or the newer one of Trump support. This result calls for caution interpreting models that …

A Meta-Analysis Of The Correlations Among Broad Intelligences: Understanding Their Relations, Victoria M. Bryan, John D. Mayer Jul 2020

A Meta-Analysis Of The Correlations Among Broad Intelligences: Understanding Their Relations, Victoria M. Bryan, John D. Mayer

UNH Personality Lab

The broad intelligences include a group of mental abilities such as comprehension knowledge, quantitative reasoning, and spatial reasoning that are relatively specific in their focus and fall at the second stratum of the Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) model of intelligence. In recent years, the field has seen a proliferation of mental abilities being considered for inclusion among the broad intelligences, which poses challenges in terms of their effective and efficient assessment. We conducted a meta-analysis of 60 articles that reported correlations among the broad intelligences. Results indicated that the average correlation among broad intelligences fell between r = .52 and r = …

When People Estimate Their Personal Intelligence Who Is Overconfident? Who Is Accurate?, John D. Mayer, A. T. Panter, David R. Caruso

UNH Personality Lab

Objective

We explore accurate self-knowledge versus overconfidence in personal intelligence—a “broad” intelligence about personality. The theory of personal intelligence proposes that people vary in their ability to understand the traits, goals, plans, and actions of themselves and others. We wondered who accurately knew that they were higher in personal intelligence and who did not, and whether individuals with more accurate estimates were distinguishable from others in their psychological characteristics.

Method

Three archival data sets were identified that included both self-estimates and objective measures of personal intelligence: The measures were the Self-Estimated Personal Intelligence scale (SEPI) and the Test of Personal …

Exploring Communicative Adaptations Of Minority Status Individuals: An Overview Of Code Switching Literature, Angelique Georges Jun 2020

Exploring Communicative Adaptations Of Minority Status Individuals: An Overview Of Code Switching Literature, Angelique Georges

Perspectives

The literature review provides an overview of the development of code switches, or the event in which one changes from a non-native language to a native language, in the field of sociology. Previous sociological studies largely explored the topic of code switch, as it related to how language impacts different minority groups, such as African Americans/Blacks, Latinx, and/or Asian individuals, in terms of employment and education opportunities. In general, treatment among minority status individuals were unequal and the literature mostly focused on the listener’s perspective. Thereupon, this literature review seeks to focus on the importance of studying the speaker’s perspective, …

Effects Of Parental Incarceration On Children’S Mental Health And Educational Success By Race And Gender, Julia Stergas Jun 2020

Effects Of Parental Incarceration On Children’S Mental Health And Educational Success By Race And Gender, Julia Stergas

Perspectives

This literature review will evaluate the extent to which parental incarceration impacts children’s mental health and educational success and how these effects differ by race and gender. An introductory section will be followed by definitions of mental health, educational success, race, and gender as they appear in the literature. My discussion on mental health will focus on how parental incarceration places children at greater risk for poor mental health outcomes and how young boys and girls exhibit different mental health problems after experiencing parental incarceration. My discussion on educational success will focus on how parental incarceration is associated with children’s …

Effects Of Socioeconomic Status And Race On Access To Healthcare In The United States, Madeline Ohlson Jun 2020

Effects Of Socioeconomic Status And Race On Access To Healthcare In The United States, Madeline Ohlson

Perspectives

This literature review discusses the effects of an individual or community’s socioeconomic status and race on their access to healthcare in the United States as important and controversial. Health issues affect all Americans, yet inequalities still exist in the healthcare system. Aspects of socioeconomic status and race are prevalent factors in many social problems, especially in their significant influence on access to, quality of, and availability of healthcare that a person receives. The reviewed studies discuss how social stratification regarding socioeconomic status and race lead to disparities in the field of healthcare when discussing the quality of care, health insurance, …

Sexual Harassment In Professional Settings Among College Students And Adults, Kaitlyn Sawler, Angel Brady Jun 2020

Sexual Harassment In Professional Settings Among College Students And Adults, Kaitlyn Sawler, Angel Brady

Perspectives

This paper looks at sexual harassment in the workplace, comparing nationwide General Social Survey data, Carsey School of Public Policy New Hampshire data, and the data from our study of UNH Durham students. Sexual harassment is being reported in high numbers across society leading to numerous negative impacts on a person’s physical and mental well-being. We hypothesize that participants in our study will experience sexual harassment less than participants in the nation and state-wide studies. We also hypothesized that female participants from our sample will have higher reportings of experiencing sexual harassment than the male participants. Using convenience sampling, participants …

Identifying A Typology Of Emerging Adult Romantic Relationships: Implications For Relationship Education, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer, Tyler B. Jamison Jun 2020

Identifying A Typology Of Emerging Adult Romantic Relationships: Implications For Relationship Education, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer, Tyler B. Jamison

Faculty Publications

Objective: Our objective was to use multiple romantic relationship dimensions to identify a typology of emerging adult romantic relationships.

Background: Emerging adult romantic relationships vary in terms of their relational dynamics, emotional and physical intimacy, and commitment. Understanding the diversity in emerging adult romantic relationships is crucial for developing effective relationship education for emerging adults as they make decisions about their romantic partnerships.

Method: Using data from 396 romantically involved but unmarried emerging adults, we used cluster analysis to identify a typology of romantic relationships based on relational dynamics (i.e., warmth and support and negative interactions), relationship duration, consolidation (i.e., …
