Arriving: Expanding The Personal State Sequence, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore Sep 2018

Arriving: Expanding The Personal State Sequence, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore

Communication

When arriving to a social encounter, how and when can a person show how s/he is doing/feeling? This article answers this question, examining personal state sequences in copresent openings of casual (residential) and institutional (parent-teacher) encounters. Describing a regular way participants constitute—and move to expand—these sequences, this research shows how arrivers display a nonneutral (e.g., negative, humorous, positive) personal state by both (1) deploying interactionally timed stance-marking embodiments that enact a nonneutral state, and (2) invoking a selected previous activity/experience positioned as precipitating that nonneutral state. Data demonstrate that arrivers time their nonneutral personal state displays calibrated to their understanding …

How To Begin, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore Sep 2018

How To Begin, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore

Communication

This article introduces the special issue of Research on Language and Social Interaction organized around the theme “Opening and Maintaining Face-to-Face Interaction.” The contributions to this special issue collectively consider “how to begin” – either a new encounter, or a new sequence after a lapse in conversation. All articles analyze naturally-occurring, videorecorded episodes of casual and/or institutional copresent interaction using multimodal conversation analytic methods. Though the opening phase of a face-to-face encounter may elapse in a matter of seconds, this article shows it to house a dense universe of phenomena central to sustaining our human sense of self and our …

Physics-Based Modeling Framework Incorporating Microstructural Evolution For Predicting Deformation And Recrystallization Of Metallic Materials, Miroslav Zecevic

Doctoral Dissertations

Large number of metallic parts is produced from the raw materials by a set of mechanical shaping and heating operations. Considering the need for metallic components in the modern industry, the field of thermo-mechanical processing of metallic materials is of immense importance. Even modest improvements of the existing thermo-mechanical processes could potentially result in great savings of time, recourses and energy. Finite element modeling of the forming and heating operations introduced in the past decades has allowed for the optimization of the thermo-mechanical processes and has thus resulted in significant advancements. However, due to the limitations of the presently used …

Drivers Of Introgression And Fitness In The Saltmarsh-Nelson's Sparrow Hybrid Zone, Logan Maxwell

Master's Theses and Capstones

Hybrid zones can provide an understanding of the genetic basis of biodiversity maintenance and as well as insight into how interacting species respond to climate change, and how climate change may alter patterns of introgression. This body of research focuses on dynamics of hybridization between the Saltmarsh (Ammospiza caudacutus) and Nelson’s Sparrow (A. nelsoni) across two populations in the center of the hybrid zone to gain a window into both the evolutionary processes underlying the relationship between these species and the role of climate change and adaptive introgression on the future persistence of the two sparrows. In Chapter 1, I …

The Bioeconomics Of Shade-Grown Coffee Production Under Climate And Price Risks In Puerto Rico, Yixuan Gao Sep 2018

The Bioeconomics Of Shade-Grown Coffee Production Under Climate And Price Risks In Puerto Rico, Yixuan Gao

Master's Theses and Capstones

Coffee production is severely affected by global climate change. One of the important impacts comes from the increasing infestation and distribution of coffee berry borer (CBB), the most damaging coffee pest worldwide. Shade-grown coffee (SGC) systems can alleviate the impacts and increase the resilience of coffee farms by providing non-market and market ecosystem services.

From an ecological perspective, SGC systems can provide many non-market ecosystem services such as pest risk mitigation, soil water retention, soil fertility, and pollination, which are all critical factors affecting coffee yields. From a financial perspective, SGC systems can benefit farmers by increasing the prices through …

Master's Theses and Capstones

The objective of this thesis was to explore the topic of scalable web development, and it answered the question, “How do you scale a website to handle more traffic at peak times without wasting resources?” This is important research to any web company that has issues with rising costs as demand for their website increases. It would be wise for every online business to be prepared for more web traffic, before it occurs, without spending the budget of a multi-million user web company in low traffic periods. The last thing you want is an error as your customer base starts …

Learning Temporal Dynamics Of Human-Robot Interactions From Demonstrations, Estuardo Rene Carpio Mazariegos Sep 2018

Learning Temporal Dynamics Of Human-Robot Interactions From Demonstrations, Estuardo Rene Carpio Mazariegos

Master's Theses and Capstones

The presence of robots in society is becoming increasingly common, triggering the need to learn reliable policies to automate human-robot interactions (HRI). Manually developing policies for HRI is particularly challenging due to the complexity introduced by the human component. The aim of this thesis is to explore the benefits of leveraging temporal reasoning to learn policies for HRIs from demonstrations. This thesis proposes and evaluates two distinct temporal reasoning approaches. The first one consists of a temporal-reasoning-based learning from demonstration (TR-LfD) framework that employs a variant of an Interval Temporal Bayesian Network to learn the temporal dynamics of an interaction. …

A Dam Passage Performance Standard Model For American Shad, Daniel S. Stich, Timothy F. Sheehan, Joseph D. Zydlewski Jul 2018

A Dam Passage Performance Standard Model For American Shad, Daniel S. Stich, Timothy F. Sheehan, Joseph D. Zydlewski

New Hampshire EPSCoR

Objectives for recovery of alosines commonly involve improving fish passage at dams during migration. However, a quantitative basis for dam passage performance standards is largely absent. We describe development of a stochastic life-history-based simulation model for American shad, Alosa sapidissima, to estimate effects of dam passage and migratory delay on abundance, spatial distribution of spawning adults, and demographic structuring in space and time. We used the Penobscot River, Maine, USA, as a case study to examine sensitivity of modeled population metrics and probability of achieving specific management goals to inputs. Spawner abundance and percentage of repeat spawners were most sensitive …

Supreme Court Struggles To Define 'Searches' As Technology Changes, Behzad Mirhashem

Law Faculty Scholarship

[Excerpt] "What the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution means when it protects citizens agains an unreasonable search by government agents isn't entirely clear. It certainly includes police physically entering a person's home, but for almost 100 years, the Supreme Court has tried to define what else might qualify, including keeping the law up-to-date with new technologies - as a recent case illustrates."

Salt marshes dominated by saline seepweed (Suaeda heteroptera) provide important ecosystem services such as sequestering carbon (blue carbon), maintaining healthy fisheries, and protecting shorelines. These salt marshes also constitute stunning red beach landscapes, and the resulting tourism significantly contributes to the local economy. However, land use change and degradation have led to a substantial loss of the red beach area. It remains unclear how human activities influence the top‐down and bottom‐up forces that regulate the distribution and succession of these salt marshes and lead to the degradation of the red beaches. We examined how bottom‐up forces influenced the germination, emergence, …

Despite decades of research progress, ecologists are still debating which pools and fluxes provide nitrogen (N) to plants and soil microbes across different ecosystems. Depolymerization of soil organic N is recognized as the rate-limiting step in the production of bioavailable N, and it is generally assumed that detrital N is the main source. However, in many mineral soils, detrital polymers constitute a minor fraction of total soil organic N. The majority of organic N is associated with clay-sized particles where physicochemical interactions may limit the accessibility of N-containing compounds. Although mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) has historically been considered a critical, …
