Seismic Site Response Of Partially Saturated Soil Layers, Morteza Mirshekari May 2018

Seismic Site Response Of Partially Saturated Soil Layers, Morteza Mirshekari

Doctoral Dissertations

Accurate prediction of seismic ground response plays a vital role in earthquake-resistant, sustainable, and cost-effective design of infrastructure. Seismic response of unsaturated soil layers may differ from that of saturated or dry soil deposits. Importantly, surficial soil layers are often partially water-saturated, however, site-specific design procedures only consider ground in either dry or fully saturated conditions. Further, seasonal water table fluctuation introduces additional uncertainty in site-specific response analysis. This research investigates the effect of soil-water interaction on seismic site response of soil layers both experimentally and numerically. To that end, initially, preliminary numerical analyses were performed using the DEEPSOIL software …

Working Alliances: The Implications Of Person-Centered Theory For Student-Teacher Relationships And Learning, Adam Parker Cogbill May 2018

Working Alliances: The Implications Of Person-Centered Theory For Student-Teacher Relationships And Learning, Adam Parker Cogbill

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation project, I interview four therapists and four writing teachers to learn if there were any significant similarities in differences in their approaches to dyadic relationships with students and clients. By dyadic, I mean what happens between individuals in a 1-on-1 setting when subjectivities collide. I was guided in my investigation by the core concepts of person-centered theory, which have heavily influenced the work of clinical therapists for the past half-century or more. These concepts are congruence, or whether one’s behaviors and speech match what one is feeling; empathy, the process of entering and becoming familiar with another’s …

The Activity Of Becoming A Second-Career Teacher, Michael Hildebrandt May 2018

The Activity Of Becoming A Second-Career Teacher, Michael Hildebrandt

Doctoral Dissertations

This is a study of three second-career teachers’ experiences of self transformation and the processes of socialization and identity formation each undergoes during his or her first three to five years as a full-time teacher. Each narrative offers a means through which to explore how liminal identity is at play during the transition to a new career—an experience that reshapes the experiences and self-understandings of individuals in the process of becoming teachers. The narratives that emerge from in-depth interviews showcase individuals with multi-faceted lives who have engaged in a multitude of personal and professional activities throughout their life course and …

Performance Based Evaluation Of Cracking In Asphalt Concrete Using Viscoelastic And Fracture Properties, Mirkat Tamire Oshone May 2018

Performance Based Evaluation Of Cracking In Asphalt Concrete Using Viscoelastic And Fracture Properties, Mirkat Tamire Oshone

Doctoral Dissertations

Cracking is one of the major distresses encountered in pavements. Pavements that fail prematurely due to cracking precipitate lower ride quality, elevate the chance of road accidents, and cause agencies to spend considerable amount of public funds on pavement maintenance and rehabilitation. As part of the concerted endeavor to ensure high performing pavements, extensive research is being undertaken throughout the United States to develop more effective and efficient performance based materials selection and specification procedures as well as mechanistic-empirical (M-E) methods for pavement cracking performance evaluation. However, agencies have been hesitant to introduce the methods to their specifications, pavement evaluation …

The Photosynthesis-Foliar Nitrogen Relationship In Deciduous And Evergreen Forests In New Hampshire, Conor Madison May 2018

The Photosynthesis-Foliar Nitrogen Relationship In Deciduous And Evergreen Forests In New Hampshire, Conor Madison

Master's Theses and Capstones

Biomass production in forests is a key process in the global carbon (C) cycle that is strongly linked to photosynthesis and related leaf traits. Spatially, relationships among leaf traits can vary as a function of climate, soils and species composition. As modeling approaches to estimate C gain improve, the need to understand variability in leaf traits becomes increasingly important. Here, we characterized the relationship between photosynthetic capacity (Amax), foliar nitrogen and leaf mass per area (LMA) within and across species in northern hardwood and evergreen stands of the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire, a region that has been …

The Use Of Military Force And The Constitution, John M. Greabe Apr 2018

The Use Of Military Force And The Constitution, John M. Greabe

Law Faculty Scholarship

[Excerpt] Last week, for the second time since becoming president, President Donald Trump ordered a military strike on Syria without seeking or obtaining authorization from Congress. Both strikes were responsive to chemical-weapons attacks that, American intelligence analysts say, the Syrian government launched against its own people.

Many believe that these forceful responses to horrific war crimes involving banned weapons were morally justified. But were they constitutional?

Bedform Geometry And Bedload Sediment Flux In Coastal Wave, Current, And Combined Wave-Current Flows, Meagan Wengrove Apr 2018

Bedform Geometry And Bedload Sediment Flux In Coastal Wave, Current, And Combined Wave-Current Flows, Meagan Wengrove

Doctoral Dissertations

Ripples and megaripples aggregate our coastlines, inlets, and rivers. This dissertation provides evidence for the contribution of small scale bedform migration to the evolution of larger coastal morphology. Using the connection between scales as a justification for continued research into the dynamics of growth and sediment flux associated with the mobility of ripples and megaripples in our coastal areas, this dissertation examines the dynamics between current dominant, wave dominant, and combined wave-current dominant bedforms on the multi-ripple and intra-ripple scales. Finally, this dissertation proposes that the bedload sediment flux is correlated with the total kinetic energy in the flow field …

Experiments And Analysis Of Aluminum Tube Hydroforming, Adam Ryan Kaplan Apr 2018

Experiments And Analysis Of Aluminum Tube Hydroforming, Adam Ryan Kaplan

Master's Theses and Capstones

This is a thesis on the development of an experimental table-top sized tube hydroforming machine at the University of New Hampshire. This thesis documents the design of the machine and the exploration of the forming envelope of the device via finite element modeling of the forming process. Several experiments on Al-6061-T4 tubes were used to evaluate the plastic behavior and strain limits of the tube in the axial and circumferential (hoop) directions. Two of these material tests, the uniaxial tension test and the ring hoop tension tests, were simulated with finite element models to refine the Al-6061-T4 plasticity curve, including …

The Death Penalty And The Constitution, John M. Greabe Mar 2018

The Death Penalty And The Constitution, John M. Greabe

Law Faculty Scholarship

[excerpt] The death penalty is back in the news. Last week, President Donald Trump argued that capital punishment should be available to punish drug dealers who have contributed to the opioid crisis. Earlier this month, the New Hampshire Senate voted to prospectively repeal the state's death penalty. These developments provide occasion to review the constitutional issues raised when the federal government or a state seeks to put a convict to death.

Facilitating Meaningful Change Within U.S. Law Schools, Patrick H. Gaughan Mar 2018

Facilitating Meaningful Change Within U.S. Law Schools, Patrick H. Gaughan

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

Despite the widely recognized challenges and complaints facing U.S. legal education, very little is understood about how law schools can adapt faster and better. This Article uses institutional theory, behavioral economics, and psychology to explain why change has proven so difficult for U.S. law schools. Next, using institutional entrepreneurship, the Article explains the theoretical steps necessary to overcome the institutional resistance to change. The Article then discusses the characteristics of opportunities that are most likely to better meet the needs of law students while also providing sustainable benefits to the individually innovating law schools. Using management theory, the Article then …

Strict Property Tax Caps: A Case Study Of Massachusetts's Proposition 2 1/2, Its Shortcomings, And The Path Forward, Trevor J. Brown Mar 2018

Strict Property Tax Caps: A Case Study Of Massachusetts's Proposition 2 1/2, Its Shortcomings, And The Path Forward, Trevor J. Brown

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

Strict property tax caps are statutory measures that limit municipalities from raising property taxes by more than a certain percentage each fiscal year. In addition, they place a ceiling on the total amount of real and personal property tax revenue a municipality can raise annually. Often spearheaded by voter initiative, strict property tax caps are championed by proponents as a way to limit taxes and increase civic participation. Conversely, detractors frame caps as artificial barriers that improperly constrain local governments in their taxing powers.

Massachusetts voters approved a strict property tax cap, Proposition 2 1⁄2, in 1980. Proposition 2 1⁄2 …

Rediscovering Antitrust's Lost Values, Thomas J. Horton Mar 2018

Rediscovering Antitrust's Lost Values, Thomas J. Horton

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

This Article traces Congress’s consistent balancing and blending of social, political, moral, and economic values and objectives over the course of nearly 120 years of antitrust legislation. As a starting point, a plethora of outstanding and insightful scholarship analyzing Congress’s objectives in passing the Sherman, Clayton, and FTC Acts already exists. Less studied, however, has been Congress’s more recent legislation, including the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976 (HSR Act), and the National Cooperative Production Amendments of 1993 and 2004, to the National Cooperative Research Act of 1984 (NCRPA). By analyzing the legislative histories of such antitrust legislation in detail, …

The Claim Of Judicial Finality: Theory Undercut By Experience, Louis Fisher Mar 2018

The Claim Of Judicial Finality: Theory Undercut By Experience, Louis Fisher

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

Justices of the Supreme Court, legal scholars, and reporters who cover judicial proceedings frequently claim that when the Court issues a constitutional decision it remains final unless the Court changes its mind or the Constitution is amended to reverse the Court. However, the record of more than two centuries offers an entirely different picture. Decisions by the Supreme Court lack finality on constitutional issues partly because the Court makes mistakes and has done so throughout its history. Human institutions, including the judiciary, are prone to miscalculation, including law, history, and political developments. After the Court issues a constitutional decision it …

Full-Time Employment Not Always A Ticket To Health Insurance, Jess Carson Mar 2018

Full-Time Employment Not Always A Ticket To Health Insurance, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In this brief, author Jessica Carson examines differences in health insurance coverage by workers’ income, and explores who is eligible for an employer-based plan, who enrolls in those plans, and the reasons why workers choose not to enroll. She reports that, in 2016, only 33 percent of low-income workers (those below 200 percent of the official poverty threshold) employed full time, year round reported having employer-based health insurance, compared to 57 percent of higher-income workers. Low-income workers are less often offered insurance: 40 percent of low-income workers work for employers who do not offer insurance to any employee, compared to …

Aspergillus flavus is a soil-borne saprophyte and an opportunistic pathogen of both humans and plants. This fungus not only causes disease in important food and feed crops such as maize, peanut, cottonseed, and tree nuts but also produces the toxic and carcinogenic secondary metabolites (SMs) known as aflatoxins. Polyamines (PAs) are ubiquitous polycations that influence normal growth, development, and stress responses in living organisms and have been shown to play a significant role in fungal pathogenesis. Biosynthesis of spermidine (Spd) is critical for cell growth as it is required for hypusination-mediated activation of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A (eIF5A), and …

Halo Coronal Mass Ejections During Solar Cycle 24: Reconstruction Of The Global Scenario And Geoeffectiveness, Camilla Scolini, Mauro Messerotti, Stefaan Poedts, Luciano Rodriguez

Coronal Mass Ejection Research Group

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs), in particular Earth-directed ones, are regarded as the main drivers of geomagnetic activity. In this study, we present a statistical analysis of a set of 53 fast (V ≥ 1000 km·s−1) Earth-directed halo CMEs observed by the SOHO/LASCO instrument during the period Jan. 2009–Sep. 2015, and we then use this CME sample to test the forecasting capabilities of a new Sun-to-Earth prediction scheme for the geoeffectiveness of Earth-directed halo CMEs. First, we investigate the CME association with other solar activity features such as solar flares, active regions, and others, by means of multi-instrument observations of the …
