Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Continuous Bending Under Tension Processing Of Dual Phase High Strength Automotive Steels, Camille Poulin
Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Continuous Bending Under Tension Processing Of Dual Phase High Strength Automotive Steels, Camille Poulin
Master's Theses and Capstones
The following research explores the continuous bending under tension (CBT) incremental forming process effects on four dual phase (DP) steels: DP 590, DP 780, DP 980, DP 1180. A parameter study was conducted, finding the ideal parameters for increased elongation to fracture compared to tension of over five times for DP 1180 and DP 980. These parameters were found to be a normalized bend depth of 3.5 and a crosshead pull speed of 1.35mm/s. Using these parameters, following tests were conducted on all four steels by stopping the CBT process before fracture at 2, 4, 6, 8, and some even …

Revisiting The Far Right Violent Extremist Threat: Violent Extremist Plot Success From 1948 Through 2017, Jesse Austin
Honors Theses and Capstones
Far Right violent extremists have successfully executed over 150 violent plots in the United States in just the past decade. This exploratory study analyzed Far Right violent extremist plot success with the plot success of Islamist violent extremists, Far Left violent extremists, and Single Issue violent extremists based on publicly available data from the Profiles of Individual Radicalization in the United States (PIRUS) for the period of 1948 through 2017. By evaluating existing literature on Far Right violent extremism and analyzing the available PIRUS data, it was discovered that while Far Right violent extremists executed more successful violent plots than …
Determination Of Multi-Messenger Signals From Matter Outflows Of Merger Systems, Ronny Nguyen
Determination Of Multi-Messenger Signals From Matter Outflows Of Merger Systems, Ronny Nguyen
Honors Theses and Capstones
In 2017, LIGO detected gravitational waves from GW170817. This presented for the first time, gravitational waves originating from a neutron star - neutron star merger. Studies of neutron star mergers are significant because the multi-messenger signals in the form of gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves can inform us on the nuclear physics of neutron stars and the creation of heavy elements in the universe. Matter is ejected in the merging process and forms the outflow which provides a neutron-rich environment for rapid neutron capture (r-process) to occur leading to the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements. What we detect on Earth are …

Peer Support For Addiction In The Inpatient Setting, Rebecca Sweeney
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: In 2006 the Institute of Medicine reported that combined mental illness and substance use disorder was the second leading cause of disability and death in women and the highest cause in men. More recent data obtained from the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (Ahrnsbratz et al 2016) indicates in 2016 only one in ten of the people who need treatment, receive it. At Cambridge Health Alliance’s Everett Hospital, the site of this pilot project, opioid overdose and acute alcohol intoxication comprise one in every ten visits in the Emergency Department. In January of 2018, CHA partnered …

Strain Path Sensitive Polycrystal Plasticity Constitutive Models Within Finite Elements For Metal Forming Simulations, Milovan Zecevic
Strain Path Sensitive Polycrystal Plasticity Constitutive Models Within Finite Elements For Metal Forming Simulations, Milovan Zecevic
Doctoral Dissertations
An optimal sheet metal forming process shapes a metal part to the accurate geometry, while avoiding instabilities causing localization of deformation and fracture. Understanding the underlying mechanisms responsible for deformation localization and deviation of final part geometry from the desired geometry facilitates the search for the optimal sheet metal forming process. Accurate modeling of forming processes allows prediction of the formed part shape and can provide insight into the material behavior by interpretation of experimental measurements and prediction of variables not accessible to experimental characterization. In this work, a micromechanical material model is coupled with finite elements to create a …
In Situ Observations Of Pearl Pulsations And Development Of A Low-Noise Fluxgate Magnetometer, Kristoff Paulson
In Situ Observations Of Pearl Pulsations And Development Of A Low-Noise Fluxgate Magnetometer, Kristoff Paulson
Doctoral Dissertations
This work is comprised of two main efforts: the design, construction, and flight of a rocket-borne fluxgate magnetometer, and the examination of Pc1 pearl pulsations using data from the Van Allen Probes and MMS missions.
Our first concentration regards the design and fabrication of an improved fluxgate magnetometer. The instrument makes use of an elongated racetrack geometry to improve on the signal-to-noise ratio of previous designs. We additionally examined refined heat treatment procedures to optimize the crystal structure of the magnetically permeable core material and were able to increase the size of crystal grains. The magnetometer was successfully flown on …
Public Support For Democracy And The Rule Of Law In The Southern Cone, Patrick James Baga
Public Support For Democracy And The Rule Of Law In The Southern Cone, Patrick James Baga
Master's Theses and Capstones
This is an analysis of the countries of Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay which argues that public support for democracy and the rule of law in these countries is impacted by the institutional reform processes which are mediated by the social cleavages within these states. The paper begins with a qualitative overview of each country’s experiences before, during, and after military dictatorship. The overview assesses the degree to which each country underwent successful institutional reform at the time of transition to democracy, and how institutional reform impacts public perceptions. Also built within the qualitative overview are the historical experiences which ultimately …
Analyzing Causes And Consequences Of German Military Interventions: Kosovo, Afghanistan, And Iraq, Matthew Goduto
Analyzing Causes And Consequences Of German Military Interventions: Kosovo, Afghanistan, And Iraq, Matthew Goduto
Master's Theses and Capstones
Due to Germany’s militaristic past, anti-militarism and restraint are ingrained into German society and political discourse. For close to fifty years following WWII, Germany did not deploy its military in offensive missions. Why then, did Germany suddenly participate in a military intervention in Kosovo? Following Kosovo, why did Germany also participate in the military intervention in Afghanistan, but refuse to intervene in Iraq, just two years after the Afghanistan intervention began? Related to these questions are how did Germany intervene in Kosovo and Afghanistan and how did Germany oppose the Iraq war? And what were the consequences of the interventions/non-intervention? …
More Than Just Collateral Damage: Pet Shootings By Police, Courtney G. Lee
More Than Just Collateral Damage: Pet Shootings By Police, Courtney G. Lee
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
The Department of Justice estimates that American police officers shoot 10,000 pet dogs in the line of duty each year. It is impossible to ascertain a reliable number, however, because most law enforcement agencies do not maintain accurate records of animal killings. The tally may be substantially higher, and some suggest it could reach six figures.
Deferring to officers’ judgment when they reasonably fear for human safety is sound policy because they regularly must make split-second, life-or-death decisions in highly stressful situations; but many pet shootings occur when officers mistake the behavior of a friendly, curious dog for aggression. Further, …
Against Imperialism In Legal Concepts, Joseph D'Agostino
Against Imperialism In Legal Concepts, Joseph D'Agostino
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
The authority of government—and that of its politicians, judges, regulators, and other specific authorities—continues to grow more imperialistic. This is partly due to the imperialism of legal concepts as facilitated by Wittgenstein’s famously non-essentialist treatment of concepts through family resemblance theory. Although non-essentialism or anti-essentialism can be highly valuable in forming religious and literary concepts, and in describing the sometimes incoherent everyday usage of concepts and terms, all legal concepts should be scientific-style essentialist concepts. Such essentialism combats the broad discretion granted and obscured by non-essentialist approaches that allow concepts to absorb contradictory elements and harmfully hold them together, thus …
Understanding Institutions: A Multi-Dimensional Approach, Raymond H. Brescia
Understanding Institutions: A Multi-Dimensional Approach, Raymond H. Brescia
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
With the rise of nativist policies throughout the world, the growing dangers posed by climate change and rising income inequality, and ever-increasing threats to the rule of law, many turn to the institutions of democracy to achieve desired policy goals. Indeed, if one seeks to address climate change, preserve the rule of law, or reduce income inequality, functioning institutions are needed to further such objectives. But the ability to leverage institutions to achieve legal and policy goals presupposes a common understanding of institutions as well as an appreciation for the ways in which they can and may function. Traditional comparative …

Playing To Their Passion: A Legal Research Course That Resonates With Law Students, Susan Drisko Zago
Law Faculty Scholarship
The first year of law school is chock-full of new experiences. Students can become overwhelmed in the face of so much change that they forget why they chose law school as a career path. They often lose sight of their end goal and need a touchstone to ground them back to their initial interests. Legal Research is the ideal first-year class to connect the acquisition of legal skills with interesting topics in a way that encourages students’ engagement in their present and future learning. By adding a student-selected subject context to their class, Legal Research instructors can incorporate contextualized learning …

How To Begin, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore
How To Begin, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore
Communication
This article introduces the special issue of Research on Language and Social Interaction organized around the theme “Opening and Maintaining Face-to-Face Interaction.” The contributions to this special issue collectively consider “how to begin”—either a new encounter or a new sequence after a lapse in conversation. All articles analyze naturally occurring, video-recorded episodes of casual and/or institutional copresent interaction using multimodal conversation analytic methods. Though the opening phase of a face-to-face encounter may elapse in a matter of seconds, this article shows it to house a dense universe of phenomena central to sustaining our human sense of self and our social …
