On-Line Sea Beam Acoustic Imaging, Christian De Moustier, F V. Pavlicek

This paper describes a system designed and built at the Marine Physical Laboratory of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to produce acoustic images of the seafloor on-line with a Sea Beammultibeam echo-sounder. This system uses a stand alone interface between the Sea Beam system and a grey-scale line-scan recorder. The interface is built around a Motorola 68000 microprocessor and has digitizing capabilities. It digitizes the detected echo signals from each of the 16 preformed beams inside the Sea Beam echo processor as well as the roll information given by the ship's vertical reference. Eelgrass Wasting Disease: Cause And Recurrence Of A Marine Epidemic, Frederick T. Short, Lisa K. Muehlstein, David Porter

Eelgrass populations are currently infected with a disease that produces symptoms and epidemiology reminiscent of the famous eelgrass wasting disease of the 1930s. This disease virtually eliminated eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) in the North Atlantic for three decades. For 50 years scientists have speculated about the cause of the 1930s eelgrass decline. We have now proven that the causal organism of the present epidemic is a pathogenic strain of Labyrinthula, which was suspected, but never conclusively shown to cause the 1930s wasting disease. The Northwest Atlantic Chondrus fishery is the basis of a phycocolloid industry. Harvesting is centered in the Gulfs of Maine and St. Lawrence where the species is an ecological dominant. The extensive ecological-physiological data base is reviewed as is the biosystematics. Annual catch peaked in 1974 (approx. 50,000 t) and troughed in 1983 (approx. 18,000 t). Catch decline was due/in part, to a decrease in crop demand caused by international marketplace competition from other carra-geenophytes. Harvesting and handling techniques are described. Resource management structure is outlined, as are stock assessment and assessment science programs. The international aspect of resource utilization …

Influence Of Biogenic Amines On Bovine Luteal Steroidogenesis, Paul Jeffrey Battista

To investigate the role of catecholamines and biogenic amines in the control of bovine luteal steroidogenesis, studies were conducted utilizing collagenase-dispersed luteal cells in a short-term incubation system. Studies designed to assess the role of catecholamines showed that the stimulatory response to the primary catecholamines norepinephrine and epinephrine was mediated by both $\beta\sb{1}$- and $\beta\sb{2}$- adrenergic receptors. The alternative pathway catecholamines octopamine, synephrine and deoxyepinephrine enhanced basal progesterone production, and this response was mediated by $\beta$-adrenergic receptors. Analysis of luteal tissue using high performance liquid chromatography showed nondetectable levels of norepinephrine and epinephrine. The in vivo administration of norepinephrine and …

Groundwaters near two Bermuda marshes were sampled and studied for variations in major and minor ion geochemistry. Factors which influence groundwater geochemistry include Ghyben-Herzberg/freshwater-seawater mixing, carbonate dissolution and recrystallization, redox and the hydrology. The major ions calcium, magnesium and strontium have been previously studied by Plummer et al. (1976) near these two marshes and across the Devonshire lens. This study focuses on two wells and the chemical variations which occur with depth down the groundwater column.

The Ronson Ship: The Study Of An Eighteenth-Century Merchantman Excavated In Manhattan, New York In 1982, Warren Curtis Riess

During a pre-construction archaeological investigation at 175 Water Street, Manhattan, New York in 1982, excavators discovered an eighteenth-century merchant ship. The port side of the ship was excavated and recorded and the bow was taken apart and saved. Since that time historical and archaeological studies have been conducted to interpret the site to glean information about eighteenth-century technology and economics. The remains of this ship are particularly important because no draft or other remains of early eighteenth-century transatlantic merchantmen have been discovered.

Monthly abundances and life history traits of peracarid species (Orchestoidea and Excirolana), and the anomurid crab Emerita analoga were studied during May, 1978 to April, 1980 in an exposed sandy beach of southern Chile (Mehuin Beach, Bahia de Maiquillahue). Beach characteristics differed significantly during these years; i.e. more sand erosion and coarser sand occurred during the first year. The lowest abundances of the total macroinfauna (46-111 ind ${\rm m}\sp{-2})$ occurred during winter 1978, while the highest abundances (896-1251 ind ${\rm m}\sp{-2})$ occurred during winter 1979. The low abundances were a result of severe erosion of the habitat rather than just …

Much of the literature on childhood stress is based on adult assumptions of what is stressful to children. Rarely are young children solicited for their perspective. The present study addressed the following two issues in the assessment of childhood stress: (1) Can young children give reliable and valid appraisals of potentially stressful situations? (2) Do these appraisals differ systematically from those made by parents for their children?

In small group discussions, children in grades 1 through 4 (N = 62) provided information on sources of stress and pictures of a "nervous" person. The child-provided stressors and the drawings formed the …

A study was conducted of parasites from the yellowtail flounder, Limanda ferruginea (Storer, 1839) taken from the western North Atlantic, United States. Monthly studies, from the Cape Ann, Massachusetts area, April 1977 to 1979, were initiated to determine prevalence, mean intensity, and range of parasites in relation to host and environmental factors. A second study was conducted to determine parasite-mix between the Cape Cod and the Georges Bank subareas, including preliminary findings from the southern New England and the Middle Atlantic subareas. Little is known concerning the physiology of obligate microaerophiles. This thesis describes research aimed at furthering our understanding of the obligately microaerophilic nature of the magnetic diazotrophic denitrifier, Aquaspirillum magnetotacticum. Included are studies of iron respiration-driven proton translocation, of microaerobic denitrification and associated NO$\sbsp{2}{-}$ toxicity, and of expression and cellular location of O$\sb2$ detoxifying enzymes in this organism.
