Size At Maturity Of Female American Lobsters From An Estuarine And Coastal Population, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Susan A. Little

The size at which female lobsters reach sexual maturity was determined for two populations that inhabit waters along the coast of New Hampshire. One group was captured in the Great Bay estuary, where water temperatures in the summer typically average between 17 C and 20 C. The other gorup of lobsters resided in coastal waters, near the Isles of Shoals, where the water temperature was much colder during the summer (11-15 C). Maturity was assessed using criteria that included the following: ovarian classification; abdominal width/carapce length (CL) ratio; and the size frequency distribution of berried females. Specific inbred lines of chickens expressing different major histocompatibility (B) complex haplotypes were studied for their immunogenetic response to the avian coccidium Eimeria tenella and genetically-engineered antigens cloned from this parasite species. The relative influence of the B-F vs. B-G chromosomal regions on innnate resistance and immunity to E. tenella was studied among six B-F/B-G recombinant hosts. F$\sb1$ chicks of similar genotypes, $B\sp{\rm R3}$ and $B\sp{\rm R4} (B\sp{\rm F2-G23}B\sp{17}$), gained significantly more weight than those with $B\sp{\rm R1}(B\sp{\rm F24-G23}B\sp{17})$ and $B\sp{\rm R5} (B\sp{\rm F21-G19}B\sp{17})$ following exposure to a single high dose of 25,000 oocysts, although no differences in cecal lesion …

Luteal regression in the cow occurs every cycle in which pregnancy does not occur. The agent which induces luteolysis is a uterine prostaglandin, PGF$\sb{2\alpha}$, although the mechanism of its action remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mode of action of PGF$\sb{2\alpha}$ in a long-term, serum-free culture system of bovine luteal cells. Experiment I investigated the influence of LH and PGF$\sb{2\alpha}$ on 3$\beta$-HSD presence in cultured luteal cells. Total numbers of cells dropped slightly throughout the 8 day culture. Numbers of 3$\beta$-positive cells also dropped in all treatment groups. 3$\beta$-HSD was best maintained in the presence …

Iron is a required nutrient for all living organisms. The magnetic spirillum, Aquaspirillum magnetotacticum possesses the ability to transform this metal to intracellular magnetite. Presented in this dissertation are studies relating to iron chelation and transport mechanisms used by this Gram negative bacterium. In addition, physiological roles of iron, specifically in respiration and the cellular localization of iron-containing respiratory components are also addressed.

Human thought is unique. We have the ability to create and share meaning through the use of various kinds of symbol systems. This study explored the shared dynamics of visual and verbal symbolic thought processes and their consequences for the acquisition of literacy. In particular, the study focused on the writing, reading, and drawing processes of the children in a process-based first-grade classroom.

The effects of chronic, endurance exercise on the concentration of plasma lipids and on the composition and metabolism of plasma lipoproteins were examined in Yucatan miniature swine following more than two years of intensive exercise training. The exercise protocol employed produced significant training effects, as indicated by enhanced cardiovascular and aerobic capacities. Lipoprotein lipase and hepatic triglyceride lipase activities were also significantly increased in the exercised group. Neither total plasma cholesterol nor triglycerides differed between the two groups. Total high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) was not significantly greater in the exercised swine; however, exercise was associated with a shift in the …

The use of cement based processes for stabilization-solidification of heavy metal wastes has been extensively studied and characterized. Microstructural characterization of the waste matrix was conducted using X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy, mercury intrusion and helium displacement porosimetry. The physio-chemical characteristics of the solidified waste are affected by the metal type, cement binder, additives, solution to cementitious ratio, and curing regime. All the heavy metals (Cd, Pb, As, Cr) analyzed were detected in the CSH structure; Cr, Cd and As were detected in ettringite, and only Cd was detected in CH. Cd was the only metal …

Sequential selective extraction procedures have been developed to determine the fate of potentially toxic trace metal pollutants in aquatic sediments. These multistep procedures operate through the application of reagents of increasing strength which solubilize different components of a sediment, thus releasing associated trace metals. Evaluation of the accuracy of these procedures is impossible with natural sediments because the location and concentration of trace metal pollutants are not known. Synthetic sediment standards must be made available to test extraction procedures.

The purpose of this study is to provide a detailed chemical and structural profile of first-year and multiyear Arctic sea ice. Ice cores were collected during April-May 1986 and 1987 near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Concentrations of Cl, Br, SO$\sb4$, Na, Ca, K, Mg, PO$\sb4$, SiO$\sb4$, NO$\sb3$, NO$\sb2$ and NH$\sb4$ were determined for samples chosen on the basis of structural ice type.

Chemical and statistical analyses indicate that finer-grained structures incorporate more impurities and that major ion chemistry is controlled almost entirely by salinity. Mg is enriched in the ice indicating precipitation is occurring at temperatures higher than previously reported. K …

The biochemical basis underlying the chronotropic and inotropic effects of peptides and amines on the neurogenic heart of the horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, was investigated. This study focused on the role of cyclic nucleotide and phosphatidylinostiol metabolism in specific actions of amines and peptides endogenous to the Limulus nervous system. Biochemical and electrophysiological analyses of amine and peptide actions on specific cellular targets within the neurogenic heart network were performed to characterize the intracellular mechanisms responsible for the excitatory effects of these neuromodulators.

The role of non-coordinated histidines in the iron release mechanism of human serum transferrin has been investigated by chemical modification of the protein with ethoxyformic anhydride and aquopentaamine ruthenium(II), reagents specific for histidines under mild conditions. Kinetic studies of the iron release reaction at pH 5 under the action of different mediators e.g., PPi, Pi, Cit, ATP, GTP, and DPG, show that ethoxyformic anhydride imparts increased stability to the protein with rate constants for the C-terminal site decreased by factors from 2 to 10. The ADR1 protein activates transcription of the gene coding for the glucose repressible alcohol dehydrogenase II (ADH2) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Previous characterization of ADR1$\sp{\rm c}$ mutations, which allow ADH2 to escape glucose repression, led to the hypothesis that ADR1 is inactivated post-translationally by a cAMP-dependent phosphorylation mechanism. This hypothesis was tested by investigating the in vitro phosphorylation of ADR1 and ADR1$\sp{\rm c}$ proteins in which ADR1$\sp{\rm c}$ proteins were predicted to display a diminished level of phosphorylation. The regulation of zooplankton vertical migration has been attributed to the physical environment, and, more recently, to biological factors. This study evaluated the influence of light, food and fish on vertical migration. Laboratory experiments quantified changes in vertical migrations of Daphnia pulex in tall columns in response to short term changes in food concentration and the presence of a fish, under a wide range of natural light conditions.

The Vwa plasmid (pYV019::Tn5) of Yersinia pestis was transduced from Escherichia coli LE392 to several F-containing strains of E. coli. Agarose gel electrophoresis of plasmid extracts prepared from the transductants revealed that both plasmids coexisted in these cells, at least to some degree, as autonomous cytoplasmic elements. Transductants demonstrably sensitive to the male specific phage MS-2 and thus carrying the F plasmid were used as donors in matings with several F$\sp-$strains. Five hundred muskmelon accessions were evaluated for germinability at 15$\sp\circ$C and classified as cold germinable (CG) or non-cold germinable (NCG). Accessions meeting the following criteria were classified as CG: germination $>$80%, EI $\leq$ 240, HI $\leq$ 265, and CI $\leq$ 290. EI, HI, and CI are mean hours to emergence, hypocotyl elongation and cotyledon expansion respectively. Only 5% of the accessions examined were considered as CG.

Two field experiments were conducted to investigate how floating rowcovers applied during autumn, winter and spring affect plant growth and development. The first experiment, 1985-86, examined mineral nutrient and biomass partitioning in a short-day cultivar, 'Sparkle', and a day-neutral cultivar, 'Fern', in rowcovered and nonrowcovered plants in autumn. This study is a social-theoretical analysis of Hans-Georg Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics. Special attention is paid to Gadamer's analysis of the nature of interpretation, which is based in part on Martin Heidegger's concept of the fore-structure of understanding. This Heideggerian concept, which implies that interpretation cannot proceed without a prior understanding of its object, reappears in Gadamer's work in his notion of the prejudiced condition of interpretation. According to Gadamer, interpretation is prejudiced because it involves the application of preconscious linguistical concepts the truth status of which is assumed during their moment of application. We analytically study the kink-antikink (K-K) collisions in the classical one spatial dimension and time phi-fourth field theory as an example of inelastic collisions between solitary waves. We use the linear eigenvalue collective coordinate approach to describe the system in terms of the separation distance between the kink and the antikink and the amplitude of shape vibrations generated on each kink as a result of the collision. By calculating the energy given to the shape vibrations as a function of the incoming velocity, we find the critical value of the initial velocity above which the two colliding kinks always separate …

The most common cause of diencephaic amnesia in human is Wernicke-Korsakoff's disease, the psychological component of a nutritional polyneuropathy associated with chronic alcoholism. It has long been understood that Wernicke-Korsakoff's disease is caused by thiamine deficiency. The symptoms of the acute Wernicke's phase of this disease include disorientation, ataxia, and ocular nystagmus, and if left untreated, death. If treated with thiamine, the acute symptoms quickly subside. However, following recovery from the acute Wernicke's symptoms, many patients evidence the symptoms of the chronic Korsakoff's syndrome, which includes both global anterograde and retrograde memory deficits and personality changes. Isolation And Nitrogenase Activity Of Vesicles From Frankia Sp. Strain Ean1pec, Louis S. Tisa, J. C. Ensign

Vesicles, specialized cell structures thought to be the site of nitrogen fixation in the actinorhizal bacteria, were isolated from Frankia sp. strain EAN1pec by using French pressure disruption of mycelia followed by differential and isopycnic gradient centrifugation. The isolated vesicles reduced acetylene when incubated anaerobically with Mg2+ ions, ATP, and dithionite. No nitrogenase activity was detected in the disrupted mycelial fractions. Vesicles permeabilized by freeze-thaw or detergents showed increased rates of acetylene reduction due to increased permeability of dithionite. The effect on nitrogenase activity of different ATP concentrations was the same in normal and permeabilized vesicles. The endogenous respiratory rate …
