Involvement Of Cyclic Amp In Multiple, Excitatory Actions Of Biogenic Amines On The Cardiac Ganglion Of The Horseshoe Crab Limulus Polyphemus, Winsor H. Watson Iii, J. R. Groome

Cyclic AMP appears to be involved in several excitatory actions of amines on neurones of the Limulus cardiac ganglion. Amines selectively increase levels of cardiac ganglion cyclic AMP with a magnitude and time course similar to that observed for amine-induced excitation of cardiac ganglion burst rate. With respect to either the physiological or biochemical effect, the apparent order of potency is octoparnine>epinephrine==dopamine>norepinephrine. Elevation of cardiac ganglion cyclic AMP levels by octopamine or dopamine is dose-dependent and is potentiated by the phosphodiesterase inhibitor 3-isobutyl 1-methylxanthine (IBMX).

Review Of Human Pathogenic Bacteria In Marine Animals With Emphasis On Sharks, D. Jay Grimes

Bacteria belonging to the genus Vibn'o were demonstrated as etiologic agents of disease in captive sharks, following their isolation from a dead sandbar shark, Carcharhinus plumbeus, and from experimentally infected lemon sharks, Negaprion brevirostris. Studies were expanded to healthy, freeranging sharks captured and sampled for bacteria at Bimini, Bahamas. The bacterial flora of 28 neritic sharks, comprising five species, were examined. All 28 sharks were colonized with bacteria, primarily the genus Vibrio. All tissues and organs sampled contained Vibrio spp.• including liver, spleen, kidney, eye, mouth, skin, pancreas, intestine, stomach, gall bladder, gill slits, and fetuses (from a pregnant sharpnose). …

It proposes that such societies attempt to prioritize problems and attempt to focus public awareness (and calls to action) in a more systematic way.

The final paper from the symposium on public participation in Risk management discusses existing procedures for ensuring the integrity of advisory committee recommendations. It concludes that they are inadequate and argues that accountability would be better served if nonexperts were included. It also suggests that, in any event, measures need to be taken to indicate, e.g., the bases for committee conclusions.

The regulatory region of the plasmid-encoded arsenical resistance (ars) operon was cloned as a 727-bp EcoRI-HindIII fragment. When cloned into a promoter probe vector this fragment conferred arsenite inducible tetracycline resistance in Escherichia coli, indicating that the fragment carried a regulatory gene, the arsR gene. A single region corresponding to −35 and −10 promoter recognition sites was identified. The transcriptional start site of the mRNA was determined by primer extension. The sequence has an open reading frame for a potential 13,179 Da polypeptide, termed the ArsR protein. The fragment was cloned into a temperature regulated expression vector. A protein with …

R-factor mediated bacterial resistance to arsenical salts occurs by active extrusion of the toxic oxyanions from cells of gram negative bacteria. The ars operon of the conjugative plasmid R773 encodes an anion pump. The pump has two polypeptide components. The catalytic subunit, the ArsA protein, is an oxyanion-stimulated ATPase. The membrane component, the ArsB protein, has been localized in the inner membrane of Escherichia coli. The ArsA and ArsB proteins have been postulated to form a membrane complex which functions as an anion-translocating ATPase.
