The Efficacy Of The Healthy Families Flourish Program For Families Raising Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Carli Madalena Rita

Honors Theses and Capstones

The family unit is the driving force that creates a foundation for life satisfaction and wellbeing of a child that extends across the lifespan. Understanding family health and family participation in meaningful daily activities are critical components of family life lacking in current research, especially for families raising children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study seeks to determine the effectiveness of an occupational therapy intervention program designed to support families raising children with ASD to identify and overcome barriers to everyday family activities. The Healthy Families Flourish Program is a 10-session occupational therapy intervention program developed for this study …

Associations Between Dietary Fat Quality And Cognitive Function Among Adults: The Hispanic Community Health Study/ Study Of Latinos, Nicole Karazurna Jan 2020

Associations Between Dietary Fat Quality And Cognitive Function Among Adults: The Hispanic Community Health Study/ Study Of Latinos, Nicole Karazurna

Master's Theses and Capstones

Individual fatty acids (FA) within dietary fat classes [saturated (SFA), monounsaturated (MUFA), polyunsaturated (PUFA), and trans FA (TFA)] may deferentially affect risk of cognitive impairment. This has received little attention by previous studies of diet and cognitive function, and few studies are available among Hispanic/Latinos. We quantified the associations of dietary FA (DFA) patterns with cognitive function among Hispanic/Latinos in the US. In a cross-sectional analysis of participants of the Hispanic Community Health Study/ Study of Latinos, recruited from 2008-11 (n=7842, mean age 55 y, 62% female). Dietary data are from two 24-hr recalls; the National Cancer Institute method estimated …

Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Depressive Symptomology And The Influence Of Psychosocial Stress: The Hispanic Community Health Study/Study Of Latinos, Caitlin Porter

Master's Theses and Capstones

Objectives: The literature on omega-3 fatty acid (FA) intake and depressive symptoms is inconsistent, potentially due in part to the influence of psychosocial stress. Some evidence supports that omega-3 FA intake may have greater benefit on depressive symptoms among individuals with high oxidative stress. We quantified the associations between dietary and plasma omega-3 FA and 6-y depressive symptoms and measured the modifying effect of psychosocial stress.

Methods: Data are from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (age 48 y, 63% female). At baseline (2008-11), EPA, DHA and omega-3 very-long-chain FAs (VLCFAs) were estimated using two 24-hr recalls and the …

The Fate And Removal Of Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products Within Wastewater Treatment Facilities Discharging Upstream From The Great Bay Estuary, Alexandria Christine Hidrovo Jan 2020

The Fate And Removal Of Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products Within Wastewater Treatment Facilities Discharging Upstream From The Great Bay Estuary, Alexandria Christine Hidrovo

Master's Theses and Capstones

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are contaminants of emerging concern that derive primarily from combined sewer overflows and discharges from industrial and municipal wastewater treatment facilities (WWTFs). One major concern of PPCPs in surface water is their potential toxicity to sensitive receptors, such as aquatic organisms, at trace concentrations due to their incomplete removal from conventional wastewater treatment technologies. However, most PPCP removal occurs during secondary treatment through biodegradation by a diverse aerobic microbial community (activated sludge). Additionally, studies have shown secondary treatment designs that effectively remove nutrients tend to exhibit a positive relationship on PPCP removal. In this …

Behavioral And Genetic Mechanisms Of Social Evolution: Insights From Incipiently And Facultatively Social Bees, Wyatt Abram Shell Jan 2020

Behavioral And Genetic Mechanisms Of Social Evolution: Insights From Incipiently And Facultatively Social Bees, Wyatt Abram Shell

Doctoral Dissertations

Bees are highly charismatic and ecologically valuable organisms, and most popularly represented by the honey bee. Honey bees are well known in no small part because they are eusocial: a single reproductive queen continually lays eggs, and is supported by overlapping generations of thousands of non-reproductive workers, all performing specialized tasks to feed and protect the colony. Despite the ecological edge it seems to confer, eusociality has emerged in relatively few bee lineages; most have instead either remained solitary (the ancestral state for all bees) or demonstrate any of a range of less derived forms of social organization. Researchers have …

Computational Studies Of Small Molecule Transport And Binding, Yong Liu Jan 2020

Computational Studies Of Small Molecule Transport And Binding, Yong Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis, I have studied two classes of systems using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations as a primary approach. The first class of systems is responsible for transport of small molecules. Specically, I have investigated diffusion pathways of inhibitory gas CO within the enzyme FeFe-hydrogenase as well as water transport in articial water channels. The second class of systems are biological proteins and their interactions with ligands. I have focused on Regulators of G-protein Signaling (RGS) proteins and their binding to thiadiazolidinone (TDZD) based small-molecule inhibitors as well as phosphosdiesterase 6 (PDE6) binding with cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP).

Specically, I …

Manipulating Single Polymer Molecules For Applications In Nanomaterials, Ruiwen Chen Jan 2020

Manipulating Single Polymer Molecules For Applications In Nanomaterials, Ruiwen Chen

Doctoral Dissertations

Polymeric nanoparticles have been utilized in an increasing number of fields over the past two decades due to their unique properties such as design flexibility and good biocompatibility. Despite various techniques available to produce polymer nanoparticles, the preparation of small nanoparticles with customized functions in the sub 20 nm dimension remains challenging. Inspired by the self-organizing behavior of natural biomacromolecules, a class of single-chain nanoparticles (SCNP) are synthesized featuring biomimicry and ultrafine size. These nanoparticles are prepared from self-folding of polymer precursors bearing reactive pendant groups by intramolecular cross-linking reactions. A variety of cross-linking chemistries are available including covalent, dynamic …

Effects Of Rumen-Protected Amino Acids And Levels And Sources Of Energy On Milk Production And Nutrient Utilization In Dairy Cattle Fed Metabolizable Protein-Deficient Diets, Yu Zang Jan 2020

Effects Of Rumen-Protected Amino Acids And Levels And Sources Of Energy On Milk Production And Nutrient Utilization In Dairy Cattle Fed Metabolizable Protein-Deficient Diets, Yu Zang

Doctoral Dissertations

Lactating dairy cows are characterized by poor N efficiency and dietary N not captured in milk protein is excreted in urine and feces, which then contribute to environmental N pollution. Nitrogen losses also shrink profit margins for dairy producers due to costly protein sources. Additionally, the dairy industry is an important anthropogenic source of greenhouse gases such as CO2 and CH4, with CH4 representing a potent greenhouse gas and non-negligible energy losses in dairy cattle. Thus, my PhD program has focused on developing nutrition-based approaches to improve milk production efficiency (e.g., milk yield/dry matter intake) and reduce N excretion and …

Templated Single-Chain Polymer-Based Electrochemical Sensing, Habib Muhammad Nazir Ahmad Jan 2020

Templated Single-Chain Polymer-Based Electrochemical Sensing, Habib Muhammad Nazir Ahmad

Master's Theses and Capstones

A target receptor is an essential component in developing selective biological and chemical sensors. Among various approaches in receptor implementation, templated polymers are synthetic biochemical receptors that mimic natural molecular recognition. They have the favorable arrangement of polymer structures to be steady in harsh conditions and can also be custom tailored to exhibit target affinity as well as interfacing with transducers. Effective templated polymer synthesis depends on the co-polymerization of functional monomers which will interact with the sensing molecule. This thesis proposes a rational design approach towards the integration of templated polymers with electrochemical sensing. The synthesized single-chain label-free flexible …

Family Preservation And Fatalities: The Effect Of Policy On Child Maltreatment Deaths, Madison N. Sundberg Jan 2020

Family Preservation And Fatalities: The Effect Of Policy On Child Maltreatment Deaths, Madison N. Sundberg

Master's Theses and Capstones

National estimates suggest that between 1,600 and 1,800 children are victims of CMFs each year (USDHHS, 2020), though it is believed that this number is an underestimation of the true figure (Douglas and Finkelhor, 2005; Yampolskaya, Greenbaum, and Berson, 2009). Two belief systems in protecting children have arisen over the past decades, influenced both by sensational cases of child abuse and research. One side argues that every effort must be made to keep the family intact: the family preservation approach. Alternatively, some argue that by attempting to preserve the family structure and failing to remove victims expeditiously, we leave children …

Developing Chenopodium Ficifolium As A Diploid Model System Relevant To Genetic Characterization And Improvement Of Allotetraploid C. Quinoa, Madhav Subedi

Master's Theses and Capstones

Quinoa, Chenopodium quinoa Willd., is a potential new high-value crop for Northern New England (NNE) because of its excellent nutritional qualities and its ability to grow in diverse agroecosystems. However, quinoa field trials have not been successful thus far in NNE because of some major issues such as downy mildew disease, severe lodging (bending over), excessive branching, overly long maturation time, and immature grains at harvest. Quinoa is an allotetraploid (2n=4x=36) species of genome composition AABB, and thus has two distinct diploid ancestors. This study reports foundational genetic studies in the BB diploid (2n=2x=18) ancestor, Chenopodium ficifolium, as a potential …

THE DEVELOPMENT OF KNOWLEDGE AND RESOURCES RELEVANT TO THE GENETIC MANIPULATION OF DAY NEUTRAL FLOWERING HABIT IN STRAWBERRYBY

SAMIKSHYA RIJAL

University of New Hampshire, December 2020

Cultivated strawberry, Fragaria ×ananassa (Duch.) is an economically valued small fruit, well known for its nutritional benefits. For agricultural production, two types of strawberry cultivars are bred: Short Day (SD) varieties, which require specific day length to initiate flowering, and Day Neutral (DN) varieties, which are photoperiod insensitive. The DN trait confers continuous flowering and extended harvesting. Understanding the genetic determinants of this important trait in the octoploid/cultivated strawberry (2n = 8x = 56) …

Impacts Of Inappropriate Human Possession Of Wildlife On The Animal’S Well-Being, Anika Frink Jan 2020

Impacts Of Inappropriate Human Possession Of Wildlife On The Animal’S Well-Being, Anika Frink

Honors Theses and Capstones

Wildlife rehabilitation is the temporary intervention by humans on sick or injured wild animals, who would not otherwise survive, with the goal of release. Individual states have their own guidelines for how to become a licensed rehabilitator with extensive standards in place for how to keep such wildlife. The standards help to keep the animals wild for their eventual release and to avoid side effects of Inappropriate Human Possession or IHP. IHP is when an unlicensed person attempts to rehabilitate a wild animal or to keep it as a pet. This study examines the effects of IHP on wildlife patients …

Pfas Removals And Increases In The Effluent Of Thirteen New Hampshire Wastewater Treatment Facilities Due To The Effects Of Biological Treatment Processes, Zachary P. Harvell

Honors Theses and Capstones

PROPOSAL/ABSTRACT:

Perfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, are an emerging contaminant of concern in environmental engineering. This group of chemicals has been used by manufacturers since the 1940s due to their desirable waterproofing qualities. They also have a high chemical stability at high temperatures, which makes treatment difficult. A large variety of manufactured items contain PFAS, such as fabrics and apparel, non-stick items, and food wrappers. Recently, these compounds have come under question due to studies supporting harmful health effects, such as low birthweight, cancer, thyroid hormone disruption, and a weakened immune system. Due to their chemical structure, PFAS compounds are difficult …

The Development, Validation, And Application Of The Eelgrass Health Index, Nicholas Anderson Jan 2020

The Development, Validation, And Application Of The Eelgrass Health Index, Nicholas Anderson

Master's Theses and Capstones

Eelgrass (Zostera marina L) provides essential habitat and forage for waterbirds, fish, and other coastal marine species, nutrient and sediment capture which improves water quality, carbon storage, and wave energy buffering which reduces coastal erosion. Changes in its health can indicate other coastal ecosystem changes. Since the 1980s, eelgrass beds have declined in James Bay, Québec. The eelgrass decline coincided with a decrease in the abundance of migratory Brant and Canada geese visiting the coastal eelgrass meadows, which the geese rely on for forage during their spring and fall migrations. Geese are important species to the coastal First Nation Cree …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Seafloor backscatter mosaics are now routinely produced from multibeam echosounder data and used in a wide range of marine applications. However, large differences (>5 dB) can often be observed between the mosaics produced by different software packages processing the same dataset. Without transparency of the processing pipeline and the lack of consistency between software packages raises concerns about the validity of the final results. To recognize the source(s) of inconsistency between software, it is necessary to understand at which stage(s) of the data processing chain the differences become substantial. To this end, willing commercial and academic software developers were …

Single-particle mass spectrometry (SPMS) instruments characterize the composition of individual aerosol particles in real time. Their fundamental ability to differentiate the externally mixed particle types that constitute the atmospheric aerosol population enables a unique perspective into sources and transformation. However, quantitative measurements by SPMS systems are inherently problematic. We introduce a new technique that combines collocated measurements of aerosol composition by SPMS and size-resolved absolute particle concentrations on aircraft platforms. Quantitative number, surface area, volume, and mass concentrations are derived for climate-relevant particle types such as mineral dust, sea salt, and biomass burning smoke. Additionally, relative ion signals are calibrated …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Topobathymetric lidar is becoming an increasingly valuable tool for benthic habitat mapping, enabling safe, efficient data acquisition over coral reefs and other fragile ecosystems. In 2014, a novel topobathymetric lidar system, the Experimental Advanced Airborne Research Lidar-B (EAARL-B), was used to acquire data in priority habitat areas in the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI), spanning the 0–44-m depth range. In this study, new algorithms and procedures were developed for generating seafloor relative reflectance, along with a suite of shape-based waveform features from EAARL-B. Waveform features were then correlated with percent cover of coral morphologies, domed and branched, and total cover of …
