A Guide To Integrate Plant Cover Data From Two Different Methods, David M. Burdick, Chris R. Peter
A Guide To Integrate Plant Cover Data From Two Different Methods, David M. Burdick, Chris R. Peter
Jackson Estuarine Laboratory
There is a lack of consensus on how to monitor (measure) plant cover in tidal marshes. Multiple methods exist to estimate plant cover, which can confound interpretation when making comparisons across methods. Here, we provide a novel and more accurate approach, building off of traditional data transformations designed to integrate the two most common methods: Point Intercept and Ocular Cover.

Petermann Fjord is a deep (>1000 m) fjord that incises the coastline of north-west Greenland and was carved by an expanded Petermann Glacier, one of the six largest outlet glaciers draining the modern Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS). Between 5 and 70 m of unconsolidated glacigenic material infills in the fjord and adjacent Nares Strait, deposited as the Petermann and Nares Strait ice streams retreated through the area after the Last Glacial Maximum. We have investigated the deglacial deposits using seismic stratigraphic techniques and have correlated our results with high-resolution bathymetric data and core lithofacies. We identify six seismo-acoustic facies …

Accurate seafloor maps serve as a critical component for understanding marine ecosystems and guiding informed ocean management decisions. From 2004 to 2015, the Atlantic Ocean continental margin offshore of the United States has been systematically mapped using multibeam sonars. This work was done in support of the U.S. Extended Continental Shelf (ECS) Project and for baseline characterization of the Atlantic canyons, but the question remains as to the relevance of these margin-wide data sets for conservation and management decisions pertaining to these areas. This study utilized an automatic segmentation approach to initially identify landform features from the bathymetry of the …

The strategy that microbial decomposers take with respect to using substrate for growth versus maintenance is one essential biological determinant of the propensity of carbon to remain in soil. To quantify the environmental sensitivity of this key physiological trade-off, we characterized the carbon use efficiency (CUE) of 23 soil bacterial isolates across seven phyla at three temperatures and with up to four substrates. Temperature altered CUE in both an isolate-specific manner and a substrate-specific manner. We searched for genes correlated with the temperature sensitivity of CUE on glucose and deemed those functional genes which were similarly correlated with CUE on …

The permeability, connectivity, and reactivity of fluid reservoirs in oceanic crust are poorly constrained, yet these reservoirs are pathways for about a quarter of the Earth's heat loss, and seawater-rock exchange within them impact ocean chemical cycles. We present results from the second ever cross-hole tracer experiment within oceanic crust and the first conducted during a single expedition and in slow-spreading crust west of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at North Pond. Here we employed boreholes that were drilled by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (Sites U1382 and U1383) that were instrumented and sealed. A cesium salt solution and bottom seawater tracer …

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) influences ocean chemistry, circulation, and the spreading of nutrients and pollutants; it also shapes sea floor morphology. In the Baltic Sea, SGD was linked to the development of terraces and semicircular depressions mapped in an area of the southern Stockholm archipelago, Sweden, in the 1990s. We mapped additional parts of the Stockholm archipelago, areas in Blekinge, southern Sweden, and southern Finland using high-resolution multibeam sonars and sub-bottom profilers to investigate if the sea floor morphological features discovered in the 1990s are widespread and to further address the hypothesis linking their formation to SGD. Sediment coring and …

Investigating The Role Of Protein Phosphatase 2a In The Salt Stress Response In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Daniel J. Dirocco
Investigating The Role Of Protein Phosphatase 2a In The Salt Stress Response In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Daniel J. Dirocco
Honors Theses and Capstones
Protein Phosphatase 2A (PP2A) is a ubiquitous enzyme in eukaryotes that regulates a large array of cellular signaling processes. PP2A is composed of three subunits: catalytic C subunit, regulatory B subunit, and scaffolding/regulatory A subunit. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the A subunit has three isoforms - A1, A2, and A3 - that are highly conserved at the protein level, indicating that these proteins may be functionally interchangeable. In comparison to wildtype plants, seedlings with a mutation in the A1 gene have roots with obvious root cell file rotation or twisting under conditions of moderate salt stress. Twisted root cells result …

Tick-Borne Infections In New Hampshire: An Evaluation Of The Diagnostic Process In A Local Patient Population, Katherine Anderson
Honors Theses and Capstones
Overall, approximately 95 percent of reported cases of vector-borne disease were associated with ticks, making these the most medically important group of arthropods in the United States.1 Despite the prevalence of tick-borne infections, the process for the diagnosis of this condition is not well studied. This study aims to analyze data from a pool of 100 patients who underwent testing for tick-borne disease in the same institution in Dover, New Hampshire during the most recent peak tick season of 2019. Information utilized in this study included: patient age, sex, location of testing (inpatient versus outpatient), diagnostic testing methods used …

“C1orf150”: A Novel Regulator Of Jak2 Kinase, And Candidate Tumor Suppressor In Human Blood Cell Progenitors, Tyler M. Wade
Honors Theses and Capstones
Erythropoietin (EPO) is an essential growth factor for red blood cell (RBC) production. In response to anemia, hypoxia-sensing cells in the kidney express and release EPO. EPO then acts in bone marrow to drive RBC formation from erythroid progenitors. Upon binding to its cell surface receptor, EPO triggers a JAK2 kinase signaling cascade for progenitor cell growth. Our lab has discovered a novel regulator of JAK2, “C1ORF150” (“150”). “150” is conserved in H sapiens and primates and is a new orthologue of the B-cell receptor adaptor protein and tumor marker, HGAL. Using a shRNA knockdown approach, I investigated the actions …

How Efficient Is Market Pricing: Can Investors Beat The Market? Further, Are Prices Always Right As Stated In The Efficient Market Hypothesis?, Porter M. Mcmanus
Honors Theses and Capstones
The Efficient Market Hypothesis is a widely accepted economic theory developed by economist Eugene Fama. The theory states that at any given time, an asset’s price reflects all available public information and will always trade at fair value. The motivation for this research is derived from the content taught in undergraduate finance courses. In undergraduate academia finance students are introduced to the idea of market efficiency, as it is a building block for future theory and application. However, this theory is rarely questioned in the world of undergraduate academia, rather just taken as fact by students.
The underlying research in …
Identifying Rpa-Dependent Epigenetic Modifications Influencing Arabidopsis Thaliana Flowering Time, Emily S. Berry
Identifying Rpa-Dependent Epigenetic Modifications Influencing Arabidopsis Thaliana Flowering Time, Emily S. Berry
Honors Theses and Capstones
Epigenetics is the study of heritable changes that do not directly alter the DNA sequence. Many of these inheritance mechanisms are caused by the addition of a methyl group to cytosine nucleotides in DNA that prevent gene expression. The model organism Arabidopsis thaliana (abbreviated A. thaliana) is commonly used in genetic experiments, and its usefulness is extended to research in epigenetics. Our current research (Culligan lab), in part, focuses on genes involved in DNA damage and repair, such as brca2 and the rpa1a/b/c/d/e genes. Previous genetic analyses suggests that the rpa1c/e double-mutant typically expresses an early flowering phenotype despite …

The Cholera Crisis In Yemen: Case Studies On Vulnerability And Resilience In Sana'a, Al Hudaydah, And Ma'areb, Noor Albannein A. Al-Saad
Honors Theses and Capstones
The largest recorded cholera epidemic in history is happening right now in Yemen, a country which has reported over 2 million cases of cholera as of 2020. Yemen has a history of endemic cholera, but prolonged conflict in the country has led to deteriorating conditions that have triggered massive outbreaks of the disease. The purpose of this study is to investigate the direct and indirect causes of the cholera epidemic in Yemen by proposing factors that may confer vulnerability and resilience in Yemeni governorates. Case studies were constructed for three governorates: Sana’a and the inner municipality of Amanat Al Asimah; …
