Gdf1 As A Regulator Of Ceramide Metabolism And Hematopoiesis In Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Weiyuan Wang May 2021

Gdf1 As A Regulator Of Ceramide Metabolism And Hematopoiesis In Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Weiyuan Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is cancer of the myeloid lineage of blood cells. In AML, hematopoietic precursors acquire mutations or chromosomal changes that cause differentiation arrest. This results in an uncontrolled proliferation of these malignant cells in the bone marrow that can interfere with normal blood cell production. AML progresses rapidly and can be fatal within weeks if left untreated. The only current curative treatment is bone marrow transplant, which has potentially life-threatening side effects. Thus, a better understanding of the underlying biology of AML is needed to enable the development of better therapeutic modalities.Ceramides are a family of wax-like …

Broadly-Based Graduate School Sponsored Communication Skills Programs: A Study In Three Essays Of Programs And Perceptions Of The Diversification Of Career Pathways, Jovana Milosavljevic Ardeljan May 2021

Broadly-Based Graduate School Sponsored Communication Skills Programs: A Study In Three Essays Of Programs And Perceptions Of The Diversification Of Career Pathways, Jovana Milosavljevic Ardeljan

Doctoral Dissertations

It has been asserted that communication skills play a critical role in success in a job (What is technical writing?, n.d.). Traditional graduate training prepares students for communication within their field of study; however, it often fails to provide skill development opportunities needed for addressing more general audiences (Coleman, 2018). This research focuses on broadly-based oral and written communication programs which help graduate students to learn to write and orally communicate more effectively to different audiences for different purposes, in and outside of academia, enabling them to explain clearly what they do and why it matters.Using archival analysis and interviews, …

Genome Evolution And Population Dynamics Of Staphylococcus Bacteria, Joshua Smith May 2021

Genome Evolution And Population Dynamics Of Staphylococcus Bacteria, Joshua Smith

Doctoral Dissertations

The gram-positive bacterial genus Staphylococcus (phylum Firmicutes) is a heterogeneous group that consists of commensals and opportunistic pathogens of humans and animals. To date, there are 57 validly published species according to the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN). The most well-studied and widely sampled species is Staphylococcus aureus, which causes a wide range of diseases in humans from relatively minor skin infections to much more invasive and serious sepsis, pneumonia, or endocarditis. For many years, Staphylococcus other than S. aureus have been regarded as non-pathogenic, but these bacteria are now being recognized as potential pathogens in …

Control Of Phosphorus Dynamics Between Groundwater, Surface Water, And Soil Compartments In A Montane Tropical Watershed, Virginia Ann Hoyt May 2021

Control Of Phosphorus Dynamics Between Groundwater, Surface Water, And Soil Compartments In A Montane Tropical Watershed, Virginia Ann Hoyt

Master's Theses and Capstones

Surface, subsurface, and soil water chemistry of a tropical river system was studied to better understand how ecosystem compartments along hydrologic flowpaths control phosphorus dynamics, what factors control downstream phosphorus trends, and what factors account for spatial variability in PO4 concentrations in a tropical montane watershed. Interactions between ecosystem compartments and changes in the global nitrogen cycle have been well- documented and described, but much less is known in this regard about the global phosphorus [P] cycle. To enhance our understanding of interactions between ecosystem compartments, longitudinal P variability, P-processing at the interfaces, and P-cycling, I conducted a series of …

Validation And Optimization Of A Steady-State Moving Boundary Model For A Vapor Compression Refrigeration Cycle, Charles Klewicki May 2021

Validation And Optimization Of A Steady-State Moving Boundary Model For A Vapor Compression Refrigeration Cycle, Charles Klewicki

Master's Theses and Capstones

The objective of this work is to conduct physical experiments to validate and optimize a steady state moving boundary model of a vapor compression refrigeration cycle (VCRC). The experimental facility includes a controlled heat source and a VCRC system for heat rejection. Pressure, temperature, and flow measurements of the VCRC are acquired at specific points in the flow loop from which thermodynamic cycles are created and cycle integrated variables are computed.

Nine sets of experiments were conducted to train the steady state moving boundary model with respect to empirical formulations for the volumetric, isentropic, and combined efficiencies of the compressor. …

Relationships Between Microbial Enzymatic Activity And Environmental Parameters In The Coastal Gulf Of Maine And The Deep Pacific Ocean, Kerry Dykens May 2021

Relationships Between Microbial Enzymatic Activity And Environmental Parameters In The Coastal Gulf Of Maine And The Deep Pacific Ocean, Kerry Dykens

Master's Theses and Capstones

Microorganisms contribute to the cycling of organic matter and inorganic nutrients through extracellular enzymatic depolymerization of high molecular weight compounds, providing essential nutrients to the aquatic environment. Since microorganisms adapt relatively quickly to their environment, their metabolic rates reflect biological responses to changing environmental conditions, such as those predicted as a result of climate change. Yet, before it is possible to predict how microorganisms will respond to future change, it is important to understand how current environmental conditions influence microbial activity. To capture a range of environmental conditions, the response of microbial enzymatic activities was studied seasonally at three Eastern …

Restoration Of Native Plant Communities In Sand Dune Systems Of Plum Island, Newbury, Massachusetts, Natalie Feldsine May 2021

Restoration Of Native Plant Communities In Sand Dune Systems Of Plum Island, Newbury, Massachusetts, Natalie Feldsine

Master's Theses and Capstones

The impacts of Superstorm Sandy on coastal resources of the eastern United States have brought the importance of resilient sand dune systems into focus. While dunes are primarily dominated by American beachgrass (Ammophila breviligulata), a host of other native species commonly occur in these systems, providing diversity and habitat complexity that is often not recognized or incorporated into dune restoration initiatives, and could benefit sites where dune dieout is a concern. Dieout refers to the death of A. breviligulata occurring in large patches. The goal of this study was to explore the importance of biodiversity on dune resiliency by using …

Movements And Feeding Of Arctic Char (Salvelinus Alpinus) Relative To Summer Ice-Off In An Arctic Embayment, Lars J. Hammer May 2021

Movements And Feeding Of Arctic Char (Salvelinus Alpinus) Relative To Summer Ice-Off In An Arctic Embayment, Lars J. Hammer

Master's Theses and Capstones

Seasonal fluctuations in environmental conditions drive ecosystem processes across the globe, particularly at the earth’s poles. Seasonality in Arctic marine systems is exemplified by an annual summer ice-off that promotes primary productivity blooms and provides nutrients for upper trophic level consumers who often migrate to these productive areas. Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) are an economically and culturally important salmonid that migrate from freshwater spawning locations into the marine environment, presumably to feed. In this thesis, I describe two studies investigating the movement and feeding of Arctic char within Tremblay Sound, Nunavut, Canada, a newly designated National Marine Conservation Area (Tallurutiup …

Applying Island Biogeography Theory And Ecoacoustic Approaches To Explore The Species Composition, Richness, And Biodiversity In Northern Temperate Salt Marsh Pools Of The Little River Estuary, Sofia Rose Licht May 2021

Applying Island Biogeography Theory And Ecoacoustic Approaches To Explore The Species Composition, Richness, And Biodiversity In Northern Temperate Salt Marsh Pools Of The Little River Estuary, Sofia Rose Licht

Master's Theses and Capstones

Salt marsh habitats are prevalent throughout coastal New England and offer a wide rangeof ecological services, including serving as nursery habitats to both transient and resident species, trapping sediment and nutrients to keep pace with rising sea levels, and improving water quality through filtration of runoff. These complex habitats remain poorly understood, especially regarding the biological communities that occupy them. The northern temperate salt marshes that characterize the coast of Northern New England contain northern temperate salt marsh pools (NTSPs) that serve as important wildlife habitats with unique abiotic conditions and biotic communities. The isolated nature of these pools from …

Assessing The Variability In Length Of Juvenile Atlantic Salmon In Maine Streams Through A Long-Term Electrofishing Dataset, Athena Marie Ryan May 2021

Assessing The Variability In Length Of Juvenile Atlantic Salmon In Maine Streams Through A Long-Term Electrofishing Dataset, Athena Marie Ryan

Master's Theses and Capstones

Atlantic salmon Salmo salar are an endangered migratory fish with recovery projects in their last remaining habitats in Maine focused on juvenile stocking and habitat restoration efforts. Population productivity of Atlantic salmon has been linked to size of juveniles, suggesting that conditions that facilitate growth in stream habitats are important to recovery. Broadly, the objectives of my thesis were to examine how different habitat and biological variables affect the size of juvenile parr throughout Maine and to assess long-term trends (1969 – 2017) among four drainages (East Machias, Narraguagus, Sheepscot, and Penobscot). Extensive electrofishing surveys captured ~250,000 individual Atlantic salmon …

Going Viral?: Discouraging The Premature Use Of Civil Liability Strategies As A Response To Covid-19, Michelle L. Richards May 2021

Going Viral?: Discouraging The Premature Use Of Civil Liability Strategies As A Response To Covid-19, Michelle L. Richards

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

In addition to the myriad of issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, the virus has also placed our legal system in a position of creating problems that can contribute to the spread of this pandemic. Despite the fact that the United States has been mired in the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccine strategies have been recently developed to provide protection from this virus, much is still unknown about the etiology of this virus and how to effectively control its spread. As a result, public health agencies at the federal, state, and local levels have only been able …

An Assessment Of The Use Of Green Stormwater Infrastructure For Flood Mitigation At Berry Brook, Rachel Lynn Hastings May 2021

An Assessment Of The Use Of Green Stormwater Infrastructure For Flood Mitigation At Berry Brook, Rachel Lynn Hastings

Master's Theses and Capstones

This research examined the effectiveness of GSI and other BMPs to control urban flooding for extreme precipitation events and compared the impacts of increasing impervious cover with the impacts of increasing rainfall intensity caused by climate change. The City of Dover has spent the last decade implementing best management practices in the 185-acre Berry Brook watershed to combat stream pollution and flooding caused by urbanization. Improvements to the watershed included building additional headwater wetland area, daylighting and restoring 1,100 feet of stream, and redirecting stormwater to GSIs, thereby reducing the effective impervious cover from 30% to 10%. Four PCSWMM models …

Progress On The Use Of Surface-Immobilized Elastin-Like Polymers As A Stimuli-Responsive Biosensor For Interleukin-6 Detection, Marissa Morales May 2021

Progress On The Use Of Surface-Immobilized Elastin-Like Polymers As A Stimuli-Responsive Biosensor For Interleukin-6 Detection, Marissa Morales

Doctoral Dissertations

Elastin-Like-Polymers (ELPs) are intrinsically disordered biopolymers with an amino acid structure comprised of the pentapeptide repeat sequence [VPGXG]n (V = valine, P = proline, G = glycine, X = guest residue, and n = total number of repeat sequences). ELPs are stimuli-responsive meaning below their transition temperature, ELPs are structurally disordered, highly solvated, and soluble in aqueous solutions. Above their transition temperature, ELPs experience coalescence and phase separation as intermolecular and intramolecular contacts form within the hydrophobic regions of the ELPs. The transition temperature of ELPs is influenced by the hydrophobic surface area, as well as changing solvent conditions including …

Enhancing Precoat Filtration Removals Of Selected Dissolved And Microbial Contaminants, Kathryn Quay May 2021

Enhancing Precoat Filtration Removals Of Selected Dissolved And Microbial Contaminants, Kathryn Quay

Master's Theses and Capstones

Arsenic contamination in drinking water is a worldwide public health concern. Contamination occurs from both natural and anthropogenic sources and is associated with serious acute and chronic health effects. In 2001, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) changed the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of arsenic from 50 to 10 μg/L. Because of this, there have been incentives for further research and development of cost-effective technologies to help meet these new standards, especially in small community water systems.Over the past decade, attention has turned to zero-valent iron (ZVI) as a possible arsenic removal material because of its efficient, inexpensive, and locally available …

Accumulation Of Cyanobacteria Toxins In Lettuce And Radishes Exposed To Water And Aerosols From A Low-Toxin Lake, Anne C. Ewert May 2021

Accumulation Of Cyanobacteria Toxins In Lettuce And Radishes Exposed To Water And Aerosols From A Low-Toxin Lake, Anne C. Ewert

Master's Theses and Capstones

Cyanobacteria are the oldest known photosynthetic organisms on Earth. They are found in a wide range of habitats worldwide but have recently become an increasing issue in both freshwater and marine systems due to anthropogenic eutrophication and climate change. Cyanobacteria produce an array of toxins harmful to wildlife and humans, some of which have been found to accumulate in plant and animal tissues. Microcystins (MCs) are the most common toxins produced, occurring in 40 – 75% of cyanobacteria blooms worldwide. They are highly stable, water and fat soluble, cyclic heptapeptides that cause acute toxicity in the liver by the inhibition …

Holistic Approach To Determine Lasting Effects Of Road Salt On Infrastructure Health, Environmental Health, And Public Safety, Annmarie Picinich May 2021

Holistic Approach To Determine Lasting Effects Of Road Salt On Infrastructure Health, Environmental Health, And Public Safety, Annmarie Picinich

Master's Theses and Capstones

Road salt has become an increasingly unsustainable material when focusing on the economic, environmental, and social aspects, especially for a bridge system. Increasing environmental concerns and regulations have caused questioning and investigations into the repetitive use of road salt for winter maintenance. There is some incorporation of these ideas into practice, such as the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Service (NHDES) Road Salt Reduction Program. Applying excessive amounts of road salt to the roadway and surrounding walkway is necessary to maintain pedestrian and vehicle safety. With the application of considerable quantities of road salt material, costs are substantial when analyzing …

Seaweed Monitoring In The Great Bay Estuary, Nh: 2020 Annual Report, Andrew Payne, David M. Burdick, Gregg Moore, Natalie White, Christopher Peter, Arthur Mathieson

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

As water temperatures rise due to global warming and nitrogen inputs change, it is important to understand how these changes are impacting vegetative communities that form the basic habitat structure in the Great Bay Estuary, NH. The abundance and taxa of intertidal seaweeds have been monitored at fixed locations throughout the Estuary since 2013. In 2020, percent cover and biomass were collected from five intertidal and four subtidal sampling locations. Data from 2013-2020 show appreciable amounts of nuisance seaweeds (primarily reds), including several introduced species. Cover of green seaweeds decreased significantly over time at the two intertidal sites (Depot Road …
