Cellular Coding Properties Of Goal Directed Behavior In The Mediodorsal And Intralaminar Nucleus Of The Rat: Comparisons To Prefrontal Cortex, Rikki Lou Ann Miller Jan 2016

Cellular Coding Properties Of Goal Directed Behavior In The Mediodorsal And Intralaminar Nucleus Of The Rat: Comparisons To Prefrontal Cortex, Rikki Lou Ann Miller

Doctoral Dissertations

The mediodorsal (MD) and rostral intralaminar (IL) nuclei of central thalamus interact with prefrontal cortex (PFC) through multiple pathways to control goal directed behavior. The initial purpose of this dissertation was to characterize cellular coding properties of these nuclei in central thalamus using electrophysiological measures in awake, behaving rats performing a dynamic delayed non-match to position (DNMTP) task. Two major aims were developed. The first of these was based on the strong reciprocal connections between central thalamus and PFC. Therefore, the current data was compared to data previously collected in prefrontal cortex (Onos et al., 2015). The second was that …

Sensation, Intuition, Space, And Time In Hegel’S Philosophy Of Subjective Spirit, Willem A. Devries Jan 2016

Sensation, Intuition, Space, And Time In Hegel’S Philosophy Of Subjective Spirit, Willem A. Devries

Faculty Publications

The subject of space, time, sensation, and intuition in Hegel is complicated, more so in Hegel than in Kant, and for good reason. Hegel rejected Kant’s Transcendental Idealism; besides the subjective reality Kant attributed to space and time, Hegel also attributed to them a truly objective reality. According to Hegel, space and time qualify finite things as they really are. Moreover, I shall argue, space and time, in Hegel’s view, have two different modes of subjective presence. We can illuminate these distinctive modes of subjective presence by comparing Hegel’s with Wilfrid Sellars’ strikingly similar arguments against Transcendental Idealism.

Contributing Factors To Attitudes And Beliefs About Diversity, Rachael M. Duda Ms. Jan 2016

Contributing Factors To Attitudes And Beliefs About Diversity, Rachael M. Duda Ms.

Honors Theses and Capstones

Diversity is a major issue in the world today. This project studied the attitudes and beliefs about diversity in order to understand where they originate. It focused on family beliefs and educational experiences and whether they each play a role in one’s perspective of other races/ethnicities. The sample consisted of 100 University of New Hampshire undergraduate students recruited through Facebook as well as in-class presentations on campus. Students were asked to complete a survey online. Quantitative results revealed that neither family nor education, as measured with forced-choice questions, were predictive of acceptance of other races. Overall, students reported themselves and …

Through My Eyes: The Effect On Family Life Of Having Siblings With Autism Spectrum Disorder As Experienced By A Typically Developing Adolescent, Samantha L. Brand

Honors Theses and Capstones

As the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) continues to increase, research efforts have begun to focus on the effects a person with ASD has on family life. The dominant voice in the extant literature is that of parents and caregivers, but only a small body of research explores the experiences of siblings. Using a phenomenological approach, a qualitative study was conducted to understand how a typically developing (TD) adolescent experiences the effects of having siblings with ASD on family routines and activities. Findings indicate that the family’s performance context—including routines, relationships, and activities—acts as the mediator of the bidirectional …

Players, Consumers And Creators: Literacy Orientations Among Adolescents Attending A Small, Rural School, Christina Marie Robison Jan 2016

Players, Consumers And Creators: Literacy Orientations Among Adolescents Attending A Small, Rural School, Christina Marie Robison

Doctoral Dissertations

This phenomenological study identifies three distinct literacy orientations among ten eighth and ninth grade students who attend a small, rural school in Northern New England: Game Players, Critical Consumers, and Aspirational Creators. In order to understand ongoing challenges for rural students in post-secondary life, students’ literacy practices, values and beliefs are examined within the context of students’ lived experiences and analyzed through the lens of literacy sponsorship. Their literacy practices, which are superficially uniform, are shown to have varying significance depending upon their literacy orientations. These underlying philosophies represent the purpose students perceive their literacy practices serve: to further their …

Strategic Gendering: The Negotiated Social Actions Of Adolescent Girls, Joann Stemmermann Jan 2016

Strategic Gendering: The Negotiated Social Actions Of Adolescent Girls, Joann Stemmermann

Doctoral Dissertations

This qualitative study is focused on how gender expectations shape the identities and social actions of seven white middle class adolescent girls. Utilizing an ethnographically oriented grounded theory approach, this study seeks to reframe adolescent girls’ agentic actions in relation to cultural influences. This investigation looks at “cultural impasses” in girls’ lives and how they are indicators of gendered preconditions which shape their everyday choices and behaviors. Research aims are embedded in the concept that gender is socially constructed and produced through the combined interplay of girls’ social actions and cultural demands. Through an examination of girl and adult narratives, …

Using Your Mind To Train Your Body: An Experimental Autobiographical Memory Intervention For Adolescent Physical Activity, Mathew Biondolillo Jan 2016

Using Your Mind To Train Your Body: An Experimental Autobiographical Memory Intervention For Adolescent Physical Activity, Mathew Biondolillo

Doctoral Dissertations

Developmentally, physical activity levels tend to decline from adolescence to early adulthood. Adolescent physical activity programs have been largely ineffective, leading to a call for new low-cost interventions. This study examined the effects of an autobiographical memory intervention on adolescent physical activity. Over six weeks, students (N = 558) in a New England middle school completed questionnaires and were timed weekly in physical education classes while training for a school-wide race. During Week Three, some students were asked to provide a positive motivational physical activity memory and others a control memory. Students indicated their intentions to be physical active, completed …

Reasons For Revealing And Concealing Interpersonal Trauma, Sidney Bennett Jan 2016

Reasons For Revealing And Concealing Interpersonal Trauma, Sidney Bennett

Doctoral Dissertations

Prior research has documented the role that revealing and concealing interpersonal violence has on health outcomes for victims (e.g., Ullman, 2010). The present paper aims to add to the existing research by presenting a new model, The Revealing and Concealing Process Model for Interpersonal Trauma, to describe the process that occurs when victims reveal or conceal interpersonal violence. The second stage of the model (i.e., reasons for revealing/concealing interpersonal violence) was tested by: 1. Creating a measure to assess the reasons for revealing and concealing interpersonal violence and 2. Identifying whether getting goals met for revealing/concealing is related to health …

Supporting Early Career Teacher Learning: An Investigation Into Induction Supports And Early Career Teacher Professional Learning In New Hampshire, Kathryn Mccurdy Jan 2016

Supporting Early Career Teacher Learning: An Investigation Into Induction Supports And Early Career Teacher Professional Learning In New Hampshire, Kathryn Mccurdy

Doctoral Dissertations

The past 20 years has seen a rise in the number of induction programs for beginning teachers, including those with mentoring. However, the way in which teacher education has been problematized is still calling into question the need for beginning teacher support. This dissertation study is situated in the belief that beginning teacher induction has positive impacts on such aspects of teachers’ lives including early career professional learning.

Situated in New Hampshire, this study utilized a qualitative multiple case study design that relied on participant interviews, researcher observations, and artifact analysis of three school districts’ mentoring programs. Findings from this …

Ontology Of Close Human-Nature Relationships, Neil H. Kessler Jan 2016

Ontology Of Close Human-Nature Relationships, Neil H. Kessler

Doctoral Dissertations

The world’s environmental problems call out for solutions. At root, many of the solutions currently being offered revolve around how modern humans relate to the environment. An array of theorists have offered perspectives and prescriptions for improvement of this relationship, with many seeking to promote a sense of closeness between human and nonhuman. But, in attempting to offer perspectives on how this might be achieved, theorists tend to neglect the relational structure and dynamics that produce closeness or, if exploring it, tend to characterize the nonhuman as incapable of participating in it as a truly close, relational partner. In this …

Nesting Adaptations And Conservation Of A Threatened Tidal Marsh-Nesting Bird The Saltmarsh Sparrow, Bri Benvenuti Jan 2016

Nesting Adaptations And Conservation Of A Threatened Tidal Marsh-Nesting Bird The Saltmarsh Sparrow, Bri Benvenuti

Master's Theses and Capstones

Tidal-marsh birds that nest on the marsh surface are faced with numerous reproductive challenges. Most recently, the impact of rising sea-levels threatens to reduce or eliminate reproduction in tidal-marsh nesting birds. One species most vulnerable to sea-level rise is the saltmarsh sparrow (Ammodramus caudacutus), an obligate tidal-marsh breeding bird with reproduction that is strongly linked to the tidal cycle. The saltmarsh sparrow is a species of high conservation priority in the northeast United States (USDI 2008) and is globally vulnerable to extinction within the next 50 years (Bayard and Elphick 2011, Wiest et al. 2016). I combined molecular, behavioral, and …

Safety Net Benefit Access In The Official And Supplemental Poverty Measures By Race And Gender, Nikhail Sinea Maestas Jan 2016

Safety Net Benefit Access In The Official And Supplemental Poverty Measures By Race And Gender, Nikhail Sinea Maestas

Master's Theses and Capstones

Historically, minority women have made up a disproportionate percentage of the low-income population who receive safety net benefits. However, there has been no previous research that assesses how alternative poverty measures could impact these isolated groups of women. This study aims to determine which groups of people would receive the largest benefit if state and federal agencies used the supplemental poverty measure (SPM) rather than the official poverty measure (OPM) to determine eligibility for various safety net programs. In addition, this study assesses the intersectional effect of gender and race on poverty using the SPM and the official U.S. poverty …

Navigating Barriers At Work: Exploring The Perceptions Of Employees With Disabilities, Kimberly G. Phillips Jan 2016

Navigating Barriers At Work: Exploring The Perceptions Of Employees With Disabilities, Kimberly G. Phillips

Doctoral Dissertations

To maintain successful employment, people with disabilities must often navigate attitudinal barriers that result in bias, conflict, and discriminatory treatment on the part of their supervisors and coworkers. Two studies were designed to investigate the idea that employees’ perceptions of and response to these types of barriers depend, in part, on their beliefs about their own self-competence, ability to cope with problems, and estimations of their relationships with others, particularly supervisors, in the workplace. Two models were developed and tested to assess how employees’ perceived potential at work, as measured by both self-judgment and lifespace data, as well as an …

Major Decisions: Personal Intelligence And Students' Reasoning About College Majors, Kateryna Sylaska Jan 2016

Major Decisions: Personal Intelligence And Students' Reasoning About College Majors, Kateryna Sylaska

Doctoral Dissertations

Researchers and universities have devoted substantial resources to understanding college students’ experiences in college. One gap in the literature surrounds understanding students’ major selection process. In the current series of studies, I utilized previous research and semi-structured interviews to create the Students’ Reasoning about their Major Survey (RAMS). I conducted exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses on the items in two distinct samples and found a general factor (Satisfaction with the Major) and seven secondary factors (Balance and Flexibility, Prestige, Interpersonal Similarity, Effort and Difficulty, Interest, Perceived Competence, and Decision Aversion). I hypothesized that the RAMS would be related to personal …

What Is Self-Potential And How Does It Relate To Personal Intelligence?, Bonnie Ann Barlow Jan 2016

What Is Self-Potential And How Does It Relate To Personal Intelligence?, Bonnie Ann Barlow

Doctoral Dissertations

Intelligence is an important ability that we use in our everyday lives to understand people, such as choosing the best partner to work with on a project. Personal intelligence is the ability to “reason about personality and its processes, as applied to one’s self and others” (Mayer, Panter & Caruso, 2012). The Test of Personal Intelligence (TOPI) was developed to test this important ability. If the TOPI measures people’s ability to understand their own and other’s personality, as personal intelligence increases so should a person’s level of self-potential. This idea was tested in two studies by conducting correlations between the …

Examining The Overlapping Traits Of Athletes And Entrepreneurs Through A Series Of Case Studies, Harrison M. Quast

Honors Theses and Capstones

Today’s psychologists have paid close attention to personality and how it can affect many areas of a person’s life. From career success to criminal behavior psychologists continuously are trying to define key characteristics that may be contributing factors in the prediction of future happenings. This paper will look closely at theories regarding personality traits that are key to success. Those traits are identified in eight case studies relating to both entrepreneurial and athletic success with the findings showing a possible link between success and some key traits and an overlap of some traits between athletes and entrepreneurs.

Escalating Commitment: Business Investments And Csr, Victoria Forrest, John Hasseldine Ph.D Jan 2016

Escalating Commitment: Business Investments And Csr, Victoria Forrest, John Hasseldine Ph.D

Honors Theses and Capstones

There are many instances, in all areas of business, in which individuals can become committed to a course of action that begins costing more than it is producing. Because it is often possible for persons who have suffered a setback to recoup their losses through an even greater commitment of resources to the same course of action, a cycle of escalating commitment can be produced (Staw, 1981). This thesis serves to address prior literature and prior studies based on the theory of escalation behavior . We furthered our research by conducting an experiment using university students to test certain said …

Lost In The Atlantic: Emotional History In New England Maritime Societies, 1745 To 1815, Lauren Leigh Percy

Honors Theses and Capstones

This study investigates the known successes and and failures of New England seamen, second-hand poetry about women on land and men at sea, personal narratives of family members ashore, and the deeply intimate writings of men on sailing ships. Through official documentation and the productions of literary circles, it is possible to determine the relationship between the external and intrinsic motivations of men and their families to go to sea and stay at sea. Life in seafaring communities intensified human experiences. Familial separation and loss has universally emanated grief in seafaring traditions. The New England maritime narrative is a story …

Patient Outcomes Following Hip And Knee Joint Replacement Surgery: Role Of The Social And Physical Environment In Recovery, Brittany Anne Sampson

Honors Theses and Capstones

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that affects over 27 million Americans (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, 2014). Joint replacement surgery is often recommended for patients who do not respond to conventional medical treatment. Post-surgical rehabilitation, especially occupational therapy (OT), promotes recovery in patients with osteoarthritis. Occupational therapy intervention is aimed at improving one’s ability to function independently in various environments and complete basic tasks of everyday life, such as eating, bathing, shopping, driving, and preparing food. While such tasks may seem mundane for some, others faced with debilitating conditions struggle to complete them without assistance. For individuals with …
