Exclusionary Discipline Highest In New Hampshire’S Urban Schools Suspension And Expulsion Found To Disproportionately Affect Disadvantaged Students, Douglas J. Gagnon, Eleanor M. Jaffee, Reeve Kennedy
Carsey Publications
This research brief follows up on a joint Carsey/NH Kids Count publication from 2009. The 2009 study focused on larger disciplinary trends in New Hampshire schools and contextualized them in the policies, laws, and procedures that may have resulted in increased use of exclusionary discipline. The present study reports on rates of exclusionary discipline from 2010 through 2014 by school and student characteristics to better understand how and to what extent exclusionary discipline has been applied across the state in recent years.
Authors Douglas Gagnon, Eleanor Jaffee, and Reeve Kennedy report that although rates of out-of-school suspension among secondary school …

Psychiatric Boarding In New Hampshire: Violation Of A Statutory Right To Treatment, James A. Mcclure
Psychiatric Boarding In New Hampshire: Violation Of A Statutory Right To Treatment, James A. Mcclure
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] "New Hampshire law provides for the involuntary commitment of a patient such as Jane when she is a danger to herself or others as a result of mental illness. The patient has a right to treatment under N.H. Rev. Stat. Ann. § 135-C:1, et seq. Specifically, the patient should receive "adequate and humane treatment" pursuant to an "individual service plan" and "in the least restrictive environment necessary." However, appropriate facilities often are not available for patients waiting in emergency rooms, and patients can become trapped for hours or even days. This phenomenon is called "psychiatric boarding."

Integrating Hot And Cool Intelligences: Thinking Broadly About Broad Abilities, W. Joel Schneider, John D. Mayer, Daniel A. Newman
Integrating Hot And Cool Intelligences: Thinking Broadly About Broad Abilities, W. Joel Schneider, John D. Mayer, Daniel A. Newman
Psychology
Although results from factor-analytic studies of the broad, second-stratum abilities of human intelligence have been fairly consistent for decades, the list of broad abilities is far from complete, much less understood. We propose criteria by which the list of broad abilities could be amended and envision alternatives for how our understanding of the hot intelligences (abilities involving emotionally-salient information) and cool intelligences (abilities involving perceptual processing and logical reasoning) might be integrated into a coherent theoretical framework.

Elementary Preservice Teachers As Warm Demanders In An African American School, Elyse Hambacher, Melanie M. Acosta, Elizabeth Bondy, Dorene D. Ross
Elementary Preservice Teachers As Warm Demanders In An African American School, Elyse Hambacher, Melanie M. Acosta, Elizabeth Bondy, Dorene D. Ross
Education
The literature related to warm demanding describes teachers who balance care and authority to create a learning environment that supports a culture of achievement for African American students. Embedded in this stance is sociopolitical consciousness that explicitly links teachers’ care and authority with a larger social justice agenda. Drawing on interviews and online course assignments, we describe two preservice teachers’ conceptions and enactments of warm demanding in full-time elementary school internships in an African American elementary school. Findings reveal that although the preservice teachers communicated similar commitments to warm demanding, they enacted the stance differently, suggesting that while warm demanders …

The Role Of Social Agency In Student Learning, Michael C. Melville
The Role Of Social Agency In Student Learning, Michael C. Melville
Doctoral Dissertations
Although the pedagogical strategy known as the personalization principle has received considerable support in the laboratory, there is little work examining its generalizability, ecological validity, and potential for statistical mediation and moderation. In 5 experiments, these topics are examined in the laboratory as well as in a real classroom setting. Experiment 1a provides evidence for moderation of the effect of the personalization principle by the learner’s score on the need to belong scale. Experiment 1b shows support for a variable that measures subjective perceptions of the learning material mediating the effect of the personalization principle on learning outcomes. Experiments 2 …
Patient Portal Use In A Community Medical Group: A Healthcare Improvement Project, Pamela S. Kallmerten
Patient Portal Use In A Community Medical Group: A Healthcare Improvement Project, Pamela S. Kallmerten
Doctoral Dissertations
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 included the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) to provide stimulus for the provision of electronic access for consumers as a way to improve patient engagement. As described by the act, meaningful use of a tethered personal health record called a patient portal was theorized to improve patient engagement and result in improved clinical outcomes, reduced cost and increased patient satisfaction. Accordingly, financial incentives and penalties were to be awarded the eligible provider (EP) demonstrating meaningful use according to various stages with corresponding deadlines. A community medical …
Overcoming Violations Of Real-World Knowledge In A Fantasy-World Text, Erinn K. Walsh
Overcoming Violations Of Real-World Knowledge In A Fantasy-World Text, Erinn K. Walsh
Doctoral Dissertations
Fantasy-text is a genre in which events routinely violate the rules we know to be true in the real-world. In six experiments I explored the inherent conflict between unrealistic fictional events and general world knowledge (GWK) to examine these competing sources of information within the context of extended fantasy-narrative. Experiments I-III demonstrated that fantasy-unrelated violations caused measurable disruption to the comprehension of an extended fantasy narrative despite an abundance of contextual support for real-world impossible events that violate GWK. Experiments IV and V demonstrated that fantasy-related violations caused measurable disruption when they occurred at the local level and the fantasy-context …

The Effects Of Encouraging Student-Faculty Interaction On Academic Success, Identity Development, And Student Retention In The First Year Of College, Katerina Karaivanova
Doctoral Dissertations
The study presented in this dissertation was designed to investigate the effects of a brief intervention encouraging student-faculty interaction among college students on their academic achievement, college adjustment and intent to withdraw. Additionally, the effects of identity style on academic achievement, college adjustment, and student-faculty interaction were examined. Two hundred and five first year students participated in a four-part study, measuring the frequency and quality of student-faculty interaction, college adjustment, and identity development at three different time points. Students were randomly assigned to one of three experimental groups; only one group received the advice to meet with faculty outside of …
Liberation Through Listening: Learning From Student Veterans In The Composition Classroom, Sarah Beth Franco
Liberation Through Listening: Learning From Student Veterans In The Composition Classroom, Sarah Beth Franco
Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, I employ a qualitative study to explore experiences of student veterans in introductory writing classrooms. Drawing on the theories of feminist standpoint (Harding, 1986) and rhetorical listening (Ratcliffe, 2005), I describe the current cultural divide between members of the military and civilians (Pew Research Center, 2011) and identify several ways teachers of college level introductory writing classes can bridge this gap to more effectively connect with student veterans at the classroom level and raise awareness about the unique situations of student veterans at the institutional level. Survey data inquiring into student veterans’ experiences in writing classrooms was …
