Forests In Flux: The Effects Of Demographic Change On Forest Cover In New England And New York, Mark J. Ducey, Kenneth M. Johnson, Ethan P. Belair, Miranda H. Mockrin
Carsey Publications
This brief contributes to a better understanding of the linkages between demographic and forest cover change so as to inform policy efforts aimed at maintaining existing forested areas in and around sprawling urban centers. Authors Mark Ducey, Kenneth Johnson, Ethan Belair, and Miranda Mockrin report that forest cover has declined throughout New England and New York over the last decade. In rural areas, forest loss is primarily due to commercial timber harvesting and represents a temporary change. Conversely, forest cover decline in urban areas is usually the result of development and is likely to be permanent. Forest cover change is …

How Novelle May Have Shaped Visual Imaginations, Patricia A. Emison
Faculty Publications
Artists figure fairly frequently in novelle, so it is not unreasonable to suppose that they may have taken more than a passing interest in the genre. Although much scholarly effort has been dedicated to the task of exploring how Horace’s adage “ut pictura poësis” affected the course of the visual arts during the Italian Renaissance and vast scholarly effort has been assigned to the study of Boccaccio’s literary efforts (much more so than the efforts of his successors), relatively little effort has been spent on the dauntingly interdisciplinary task of estimating how the development of prose literary imagination may have …

Nurses’ Perceptions Of Horizontal Violence, Rosemary A. Taylor
Nurses’ Perceptions Of Horizontal Violence, Rosemary A. Taylor
Nursing
In this article, I describe a study exploring horizontal violence and nurses’ perceptions of the phenomenon within the context of two 28-bed inpatient hospital units. The purpose of the study was to develop a clearer understanding of horizontal violence, incorporating observation and inquiry to identify the language nurses use to describe their experiences and factors in the nursing work environment that may perpetuate the phenomenon. Observation, review and analysis of policies, and interviews with staff were completed between June and November 2012. Thematic analysis resulted in five themes: (a) behaviors are minimized and not recognized, (b) fear inhibits all reporting, …

Film Adaption And Transnational Cultures Or Production: The Case Of Guillermo Arriaga, Daniel Chavez
Film Adaption And Transnational Cultures Or Production: The Case Of Guillermo Arriaga, Daniel Chavez
Languages, Literatures & Cultures
The circulation of Latin American cinema in a transnational context has widened the options that actors and directors from the region have regarding their involvement in the different aspects of film production. In order to analyze Guillermo Arriaga’s transnational career as a writer of novels and screenplays I contrast his work with that of other writers and filmmakers who have participated in both the cinematic and literary fields. The fact that Arriaga has crossed the lines between writing, adapting, and directing his own works in Spanish and English leads me to review the current relations of film and literature in …

The Patent Spiral, Roger Allan Ford
The Patent Spiral, Roger Allan Ford
Law Faculty Scholarship
Examination — the process of reviewing a patent application and deciding whether to grant the requested patent — improves patent quality in two ways. It acts as a substantive screen, filtering out meritless applications and improving meritorious ones. It also acts as a costly screen, discouraging applicants from seeking low-value patents. Yet despite these dual roles, the patent system has a substantial quality problem: it is both too easy to get a patent (because examiners grant invalid patents that should be filtered out by a substantive screen) and too cheap to do so (because examiners grant low-value nuisance patents that …

Summer Cook Associate Professor Of Kinesiology (Cola) Travels To Australia, Summer B. Cook
Faculty Travel Reports
I was partially supported by a CIE International development grant to travel to Perth, Australia for one month in 2016. Dr. Timothy Fairchild, a colleague and friend, invited me to visit the Department of Psychology and Exercise Science at Murdoch University in the hopes of establishing a research relationship with the University of New Hampshire Department of Kinesiology. Over the last several years, I have had students earn Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) from the Hamel Center and have always wanted to give students an opportunity to apply for SURF abroad grants or to study abroad while conducting research within …
