The relationship between stability and change in social-ecological systems has received considerable attention in recent years, including the expectation that significant environmental changes will drive observable consequences for individuals, communities, and populations. Migration, as one example of response to adverse economic or environmental changes, has been observed in many places, including parts of the Far North. In Arctic Alaska, a relative lack of demographic or migratory response to rapid environmental and other changes has been observed. To understand why Arctic Alaska appears different, we draw on the literature on environmentally driven migration, focusing on three mechanisms that could account for …

New Hampshire’s 1000 square mile coastal zone is showing signs of stress in its rivers, shorelines, and two major estuaries. This stress stems from significant population increases and subsequent development, as well as intensifying weather events coupled with land use policies inadequate to manage the impacts of these anthropogenic and natural stressors.1 To effectively manage this complex social ecological system, the management community must expand its current monitoring efforts. Tracking ecological data only tells half the story; collecting social data sheds light on how people engage coastal ecosystems and highlights values crucial for affecting behavior change. The goal of this …

Post-Racial Ideology And Implicit Racial Bias, Elliot Chiang

The Effect Of Microaggressions, Predominantly White Institutions, And Support Service On The Academic Success Of Minority Students, Anna Parsons
Perspectives
There are a variety of factors that have an effect on the academic success of college students. For students of a racial and ethnic minority, their racial identity can be factor hindering to their overall success. This article looks at how academic achievements of racially and ethnically marginalized students are affected by microaggressive behaviors, a predominately white institutional (PWI) setting, and support services through various scholarly literatures. Results showed that both PWIs and microaggressions have a negative impact on academic success. However, this is due to mediating factors and not a direct relationship from one variable to another; PWIs tend …
Suicide Rates As They Vary By Region, Sexuality, And Gender, Evan Smith
Suicide Rates As They Vary By Region, Sexuality, And Gender, Evan Smith
Perspectives
Suicide rates are not consistent worldwide. They vary in a wide variety of ways. Region, sexuality, and gender are all factors that influence suicide. This essay examines the manners in which region, sexuality, and gender influence suicide by themselves and, in some cases, with each other. It offers explanations for why they do so. Finally, this paper aims to give suggestions on future research regarding suicide and future policies to help reduce suicide rates.
Resisting Punitive School Discipline: Perspectives And Practices Of Exemplary Urban Elementary Teachers, Elyse Hambacher
Resisting Punitive School Discipline: Perspectives And Practices Of Exemplary Urban Elementary Teachers, Elyse Hambacher
Education
Drawing on the literature related to classroom management, and culturally relevant critical teacher care, and effective teaching for students of color, this paper uses interview and observation data to explore the perspectives and practices of two exemplary fifth-grade teachers who refuse to rely on punitive discipline with their students of color. Findings revealed that the teachers did not view students’ behavior as challenging-- they viewed behavior simply as one of the many areas they believed it was their responsibility to teach. Their instructional practices focused on coaching students to reach their potential and liberating them from barriers that limit their …
