A Closer Look At The Test Of Personal Intelligence (Topi), John D. Mayer, A. T. Panter, David R. Caruso
Psychology
Personal intelligence involves the capacity to reason about personality and personality-related information. Studying ability-based measures of personal intelligence creates a virtuous cycle of better measurement and better theoretical understanding. In Study 1 (N = 10,318), we conduct an item-level analysis of the Test of Personal Intelligence (TOPI) to explore people's problem-solving abilities in the area. Personal intelligence divided into a Consistency-Congruency factor that concerned understanding traits and their associated behaviors, and a Dynamic-Analytic factor that involved understanding personality processes and goals. The finding cross-validated in Study 2 (N = 8,459). In Study 3 (N = 384), we examined correlates of …
Hegel's Revival In Analytic Philosophy, Willem A. Devries
Hegel's Revival In Analytic Philosophy, Willem A. Devries
Faculty Publications
Analytic philosophy is rediscovering Hegel. This essay examines a particularly strong thread of new analytic Hegelianism, sometimes called ‘Pittsburgh Hegelianism’, which began with the work of Wilfrid Sellars. In trying to bring Anglo-American philosophy from its empiricist phase into a more sophisticated, corrected Kantianism, Sellars moved in substantially Hegelian directions. Sellars’ work has been extended, and revised by his Pittsburgh colleagues John McDowell and Robert B. Brandom. The sociality and historicity of reason, the proper treatment of space and time, conceptual holism, inferentialism, the reality of conceptual structure, the structure of experience, and the nature of normativity are the central …

A Closer Look At The Test Of Personal Intelligence Presentation, John D. Mayer, A. T. Panter, David R. Caruso
Psychology
Personal intelligence is the capacity to reason about personality and personality-related information. To understand more about the structure of the mental abilities involved in personal intelligence, we fit several factor models to an ability based test of personal intelligence. A two-factor oblique simple structure model fit the data well. The findings inform us about the nature of abilities people use to understand personality in themselves and others.

After The Bell: Youth Activity Engagement In Relation To Income And Metropolitan Status, Sarah E. Leonard
After The Bell: Youth Activity Engagement In Relation To Income And Metropolitan Status, Sarah E. Leonard
Carsey Publications
In this brief, author Sarah E. Leonard uses data from the 2012 National Survey of Children’s Health to examine involvement in activities among youth ages 12–18 across income categories and metropolitan status in the hopes of informing policy aimed at attenuating inequalities in participation. While not a complete profile of youth activities, determining participation rates helps us understand what youth are doing in their out-of-school hours and how these activities vary by income and metropolitan status. The relationship between extracurricular participation, academic success, and well-being is potentially linked in complex ways, yet access to extracurricular activities and employment is growing …

Student Commuters: Unpacking The Factors That Influence How High School Students Travel To School, Alexander Chase
Student Commuters: Unpacking The Factors That Influence How High School Students Travel To School, Alexander Chase
Inquiry Journal 2017
As environmental concerns grow, obesity rates rise, and people become distanced from nature, some activists and public health advocates are encouraging the use of more physical modes of transportation over driving. The limited literature on commuters’ transit decisions mainly focuses on adults living in urbanized environments while paying scant attention to driving-aged teenagers, despite the importance of their daily commute to school. Because this group is at a pivotal point in the transition to adulthood, it is likely that their decisions and behavior at this stage of life will have long-term implications for their routines concerning exercise, diet, health, transportation, …
Social Behavior And Personality Patterns Of Captive African Elephants, Alison Jeffrey
Social Behavior And Personality Patterns Of Captive African Elephants, Alison Jeffrey
Inquiry Journal 2017
Through the Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research, I received an International Research Opportunities Program (IROP) grant to study the social behaviors of African elephants. My research took place in South Africa with the African Elephant ResearchUnit at Knysna ElephantPark. Elephants live in herds and have very strong social bonds. The social interactions and dominance hierarchy between individuals of a herd depend upon many factors, including maternal lineage, age, sex, and personality traits of the elephants.I studied how social behaviors among captive elephants vary throughout the day on an hourly time scale, if those behavior patterns are related to age, and …
Keeping An Open Mind: Challenges And Mysteries In Cancer Cell Biology Research, Yusuf Ebrahim
Keeping An Open Mind: Challenges And Mysteries In Cancer Cell Biology Research, Yusuf Ebrahim
Inquiry Journal 2017
I received a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) in 2016 to work in Professor Chuck Walker’s cell biology lab, where I had been involved since 2014. I worked under the guidance of Dr. Walker and alongside other colleagues in the lab. My work during that time focused on culturing cancer cells and investigatingthe proteinp53 within them. The body aims toprevent tumors from forming by protecting the integrity of its cells’ DNA. The protein p53 is so vital in this role that it is often referred to as the “guardian of the genome.” In fact, more than half of all human …

Preference Organization, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore
Preference Organization, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore
Communication
Conversation analytic research on “preference organization” investigates recorded episodes of naturally occurring social interaction to elucidate how people systematically design their actions to either support or undermine social solidarity. This line of work examines public forms of conduct that are highly generalized and institutionalized, not the private desires, subjective feelings or psychological preferences of individuals. This article provides a detailed and accessible overview of classic and contemporary conversation analytic findings about preference, which collectively demonstrate that human interaction is organized to favor actions that promote social affiliation (through face-preservation) at the expense of conflict (resulting from face-threat). While other overviews …
