Tracing Writing Techniques From High School To College: Writing As Discussion For Students From Low-Income Backgrounds, Connor Mullins
Tracing Writing Techniques From High School To College: Writing As Discussion For Students From Low-Income Backgrounds, Connor Mullins
Honors Theses and Capstones
Students from low-income backgrounds are finding themselves more disenfranchised with school as they progress through their high school careers. This thesis presents the notion that generating a positive form of extrinsic motivation within in the classroom can orient students to become intrinsically motivated towards schooling and writing. In interviewing six students within an Upward Bound program, I found that the approaches the program took during their summer session helped generate an interest for writing within students. By creating a community that cared for each other and brought writing instruction to focus on communication, students found themselves enjoying the process of …
An Inpatient Rehabilitation Interprofessional Care Pathway For Traumatic Hip Fracture: A Pilot Quality Improvement Project, Sarah Plante
An Inpatient Rehabilitation Interprofessional Care Pathway For Traumatic Hip Fracture: A Pilot Quality Improvement Project, Sarah Plante
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: Each year over 300,000 older adults are hospitalized for hip fracture. The impact of the cost of hip fracture on the US health care system is estimated to be as high as $9 billion, with the typical cost of a hip fracture episode around $30,000. Formalized pathways have been developed and successfully utilized for many patient presentations, including hip fracture, in the acute setting. Although this research is important to the comprehensive care of the elderly hip fracture patient, very little research exists that outlines evidence-based best-practice for patients in the post-acute recovery period.
Purpose: The primary aim of …
An Exploratory Study Of Followership In New Hampshire High Schools, Matthew S. Hicks
An Exploratory Study Of Followership In New Hampshire High Schools, Matthew S. Hicks
Doctoral Dissertations
This study explores followership theory and practical application in schools, extending Robert Kelley’s previous research from business to education. The study investigates three questions: 1) What is the distribution of Kelley’s five followership types in schools? 2) What is the relationship between teachers’ followership types and their demographic characteristics? 3) What leadership functions support teacher followership? These questions were explored using a modified 20-item version of Kelley’s The Followership Questionnaire and open-ended responses from teachers. A total of 559 New Hampshire public high school teachers completed the survey. Results were analyzed for associations between teacher demographic characteristics and followership types. …
The Evaluation Of A Breast Cancer Screening Decision Aid In The Community Setting., Kimberly Gibbons
The Evaluation Of A Breast Cancer Screening Decision Aid In The Community Setting., Kimberly Gibbons
DNP Scholarly Projects
Breast cancer screening (BCS) has been recommended to women by healthcare providers as well as professional organizations and non-profit awareness organizations for over four decades. Recently, attention is being paid to quantification of the actual benefits and harms of BCS with mammography. The harms include overdiagnosis, overtreatment and mandate of mammography screening that may not be in alignment with the individual values and preferences of women ages 40-69. This evidence translation project developed a resource for practice that was evaluated by community participants for alignment with personal value and preference-based educational needs about BCS. This project piloted a clinical practice …
Decreasing Duration Of Mechanical Restraint Episodes By Increasing Registered Nurse Assessment And Surveillance In An Acute Psychiatric Hospital, Diane Allen
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background
Application of mechanical restraints is a high-risk emergency measure that requires psychiatric intensive care in order to assure patient safety and expedite release at the earliest opportunity. While current regulations require that trained staff continuously observe restrained individuals, assessment by a registered nurse is required only once an hour. This project builds on research that demonstrated a regulatory change requiring more frequent registered nurse assessments led to decreased duration of mechanical restraint episodes in an acute psychiatric hospital.
Purpose
The purpose of this project was to implement and evaluate a practice change that required increased frequency of registered nurse …
Implementation Of A Physical Activity Group At A Community Mental Health Center: A Pilot Quality Improvement Project To Reduce Depressive Symptoms In Adolescents With Major Depressive Disorder, Nancy Gallagher
DNP Scholarly Projects
Major Depressive Disorder is a debilitating illness that affects millions of Americans, including adolescents. The majority of adolescents with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) do not receive treatment. There may be a variety of reasons for this including stigma, access to care, and potential adverse reactions. People suffering from MDD are known to be at high risk for suicide. Lack of treatments adds the risk of suicide for adolescents with MDD. Identifying and implementing treatment options that are more acceptable and accessible are of the utmost importance. Although there is limited research regarding exercise/physical activity, depressive symptoms, and adolescents with MDD, …
Reducing No-Shows And Late Cancellations In Primary Care, Jessica Hatch
Reducing No-Shows And Late Cancellations In Primary Care, Jessica Hatch
DNP Scholarly Projects
No-shows and late cancellations are a challenge across medical practices, resulting in costly, fragmented care. Many patients do not understand the impact that not showing or cancelling an appointment less than 48 hours prior to a visit can have. While reminding the patient of the appointment has been a known tactic to improve patient’s attendance, the most effective mode of the reminder can vary significantly across patient populations. Just as critical as reminding the patient of the appointment is to ensure they understand the purpose of the visit along with showing respect for their time and any competing priorities. This …
Demons, Spirits, And Elephants: Reflections On The Failure Of Public Administration Theory, Melvin Dubnick
Demons, Spirits, And Elephants: Reflections On The Failure Of Public Administration Theory, Melvin Dubnick
Faculty Publications
Author's Note: This paper was originally written and presented in 1999 as both a critical reflection on Public Administration's ongoing "identity crisis" and a rather (often too harsh) assessment of several recently published works that seemed exemplary of the problem being highlighted. Although some aspects of the argument made in the paper did find an outlet (see Dubnick, 2000), its length and contentious tone meant it was unlikely to find a mainstream outlet for publication. Nevertheless, it did circulate among colleagues and generated some collegial and published reaction (see Bogason et al., 2000). Eventually relegated to a location at the …
Sex Differences In Internalizing And Externalizing Behaviors In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Caroline C. Cherry
Sex Differences In Internalizing And Externalizing Behaviors In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Caroline C. Cherry
Honors Theses and Capstones
This study used a retrospective practice-based research method to compare levels of internalizing and externalizing behaviors of a clinically-ascertained sample of young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD; n=90). As measured by the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), internalizing and externalizing behaviors were compared to normative behavior, and between boys and girls with ASD. Findings suggest that in a clinical sample, children with ASD are more likely than typically developing children to have internalizing and/or externalizing problems. No significant sex differences were found for Internalizing Problems, Externalizing Problems, or Total Problems scores on either the parent or teacher …
Does Personal Intelligence Promote Conflict Resolution In Romantic Relationships?, Victoria M. Bryan
Does Personal Intelligence Promote Conflict Resolution In Romantic Relationships?, Victoria M. Bryan
Master's Theses and Capstones
Conflict is an inevitable occurrence in most romantic relationships given that most couples enter their relationships with a variety of backgrounds, opinions, and experiences. Previous research has implicated a number of variables that influence how couples navigate conflict resolution, including attachment style, conflict style, and certain facets of the Big Five socioemotional traits. The present research explores whether personal intelligence, or the ability to reason about the personality, traits, goals, and motives of others also plays a role in how individuals approach conflict resolution in their romantic relationships. Given that individuals who are high in personal intelligence are better at …
Advancing Coastal Resilience: An Institutional Analysis Of Living Shorelines In New Hampshire, Trevor Mattera
Advancing Coastal Resilience: An Institutional Analysis Of Living Shorelines In New Hampshire, Trevor Mattera
Master's Theses and Capstones
Flooding, coastal erosion, and storm surge pose immediate and increasing risks to our nation’s coasts. In response, both federal and state environmental and natural resource agencies are calling for strategies to promote coastal resilience, such as living shorelines. Living shorelines are shoreline stabilization and restoration techniques that aim to reduce damage from erosion and storms and promote ecosystem functions. Despite policies promoting living shorelines, there are significant challenges to implementing living shorelines in the state of New Hampshire. Using statewide stakeholder interviews, case-specific focus groups, and document analysis, this research analyzes the institutional barriers and opportunities to implementing living shorelines …

An Integrated Approach To Personality Assessment Based On The Personality Systems Framework, John D. Mayer
An Integrated Approach To Personality Assessment Based On The Personality Systems Framework, John D. Mayer
Faculty Publications
Psychologists who carry out personality assessments must be conversant in diverse technical languages to describe their clients’ social contexts and inner personality function. The clinician needs to understand a person’s family, gender role, ethnic identity, religious beliefs, and similar qualities, and also a client’s inner personality functioning, including the workings of motives, emotions. cognition, and self-control: these may be characterized by relevant psychiatric symptoms, personality traits, and individual test scores such as those on the MMPI-2-RF and Rorschach-Performance Assessment System. The Personality Systems Framework for Assessment (PSF-A) can support the assessment process by organizing information about both an individual’s context …
Brand & Celebrity Associations: An Investigation Into Brand & Celebrity Trait Congruence And The Potential For Trait Transference, Pamela S. Merriman
Brand & Celebrity Associations: An Investigation Into Brand & Celebrity Trait Congruence And The Potential For Trait Transference, Pamela S. Merriman
Honors Theses and Capstones
In today’s marketplace, a significant amount of brands are utilizing celebrity endorsers as a marketing tool. Traits of the brand and the endorser are typically not congruent. As a result, trait transference between a brand and a celebrity can occur once the brand and celebrity endorser are linked in the consumer’s mind. Further, celebrity endorsers often endorse multiple brands at one time. Therefore, it may be possible for traits to transfer from one brand to another via a common celebrity endorser. Although research has shown that the traits of celebrity endorsers can influence br and perceptions and vice versa, no …

Individual Differences In Eeg Correlates Of Recognition Memory Due To Dat Polymorphisms, Paolo Medrano, Erika Nyhus, Andrew Smolen, Tim Curran, Robert S. Ross
Faculty Publications
Introduction
Although previous research suggests that genetic variation in dopaminergic genes may affect recognition memory, the role dopamine transporter expression may have on the behavioral and EEG correlates of recognition memory has not been well established.
Objectives
The study aims to reveal how individual differences in dopaminergic functioning due to genetic variations in the dopamine transporter gene influences behavioral and EEG correlates of recognition memory.
Methods
Fifty‐eight participants performed an item recognition task. Participants were asked to retrieve 200 previously presented words while brain activity was recorded with EEG. Regions of interest were established in scalp locations associated with recognition …

Objective And Subjective Tests In The Law, R. George Wright
Objective And Subjective Tests In The Law, R. George Wright
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
Across many subject areas, the law commonly attempts to distinguish between objective and subjective tests, and to assess the merits of objective as opposed to subjective legal tests. This Article argues that all such efforts are fundamentally incoherent and ultimately futile in practice. As demonstrated below, what the law takes to be objective in the relevant sense is essentially constituted by what the law takes to be subjective, and vice versa. Judicial preoccupation with objective and subjective tests thus does no more than distract from more meaningful concerns. Judicial attention should be directed away from this hopeless distinction, and instead …
