Managing Up And Followership: Competencies For First-Year Health Administrators, Mark J. Bonica, Cindy L. Hartman Jun 2018

Managing Up And Followership: Competencies For First-Year Health Administrators, Mark J. Bonica, Cindy L. Hartman

Faculty Publications

Programs in health administration seek to prepare students for real-world challenges of leading in a complex environment. Competency models such as the one produced by the National Center for Healthcare Leadership (NHCL) focus on leadership. However, most new graduates of traditional undergraduate programs will not go into leadership roles immediately. There is an extensive literature on school to work transition for graduating nurses and a modest literature on physician transition to practice from residency. However, there is relatively little literature about the school-to-work transition from traditional undergraduate programs in health administration. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a longitudinal, …

Employees High In Personal Intelligence Differ In Workplace Perceptions And Behavior From Their Colleagues, John D. Mayer, Brendan Lortie, A. T. Panter, David R. Caruso May 2018

Employees High In Personal Intelligence Differ In Workplace Perceptions And Behavior From Their Colleagues, John D. Mayer, Brendan Lortie, A. T. Panter, David R. Caruso

Psychology

Personal intelligence (PI) involves the ability to recognize, reason, and use information about personality to understand oneself and other people. Employees in two studies (Ns = 394, 482) completed the Test of Personal Intelligence (TOPI; e.g., Mayer, Panter, & Caruso, 2017a) and assessments of workplace perception and behavior. Higher PI was associated with higher perceived workplace support and lower counterproductive work behavior. These relationships continued to hold after controlling for other key variables. The results indicate the TOPI, although still in research trials, shows promise as a screening device for selecting employees and targeting individuals for training.

Regulation Of Gaba Release By Presynaptic Cav2.2 In The Basolateral Amygdala And Infralimbic Cortex, Maxwell Robert Blazon May 2018

Regulation Of Gaba Release By Presynaptic Cav2.2 In The Basolateral Amygdala And Infralimbic Cortex, Maxwell Robert Blazon

Master's Theses and Capstones

Anxiety is linked to dysregulation of neuronal activity in several brain regions including the infralimbic (IL) area of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala (BLA). Disruptions to the balance of excitatory and inhibitory signaling in these regions are implicated in anxiety-like behaviors in animals and anxiety disorders in humans. The neuronal circuitry between excitatory neurons, known as pyramidal cells (P-cells), and inhibitory neurons, known as interneurons (INs), is a primary target for anxiety modulation at the cellular level. INs, particularly the subtype that contain the neuropeptide cholecystokinin (CCK+INs), form inhibitory synapses around P-cells. Through …

Understanding College Men's And Women's Perceptions Of Sexual Behavior Responsibility Through The Lens Of The Human Papillomavirus, Angela Mitiguy May 2018

Understanding College Men's And Women's Perceptions Of Sexual Behavior Responsibility Through The Lens Of The Human Papillomavirus, Angela Mitiguy

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is an examination of gender differences in sexual behavior responsibility and safe sex decision making, particularly among a college age population. In this study, I address one main research question: How do college-going men and women perceive their own and their partner’s responsibility for sexual behavior and sexual health? More specifically, I use the case of the Human Papillomavirus as a way to examine if there are gendered differences in the way college men and women think about their sexual behavior and sexual health and if these differences exist in the ways men and women act in certain …

Can Schools Be Reformed By Reforming Assessment?: The Effects Of An Innovative Assessment And Accountability System On Student Achievement Outcomes, Carla Marie Evans May 2018

Can Schools Be Reformed By Reforming Assessment?: The Effects Of An Innovative Assessment And Accountability System On Student Achievement Outcomes, Carla Marie Evans

Doctoral Dissertations

The Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 authorizes a pilot program that allows up to seven states to develop innovative assessment and accountability systems. Prior to the official pilot program launch, the U.S. Department of Education approved one pilot program—New Hampshire’s Performance Assessment of Competency Education (PACE). To implement the PACE pilot, the New Hampshire Department of Education received a 2-year waiver (2014-2016) from federal statutory requirements related to state annual achievement testing and was granted additional waivers for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years. The purpose of this study is to investigate the average effect of the PACE pilot …

Lessoning Fiction: Modernist Crisis And The Pedagogy Of Form, Matthew Cheney May 2018

Lessoning Fiction: Modernist Crisis And The Pedagogy Of Form, Matthew Cheney

Doctoral Dissertations

Writers committed to Modernist ideas of artistic autonomy may find that commitment challenged during times of socio-political crisis. This dissertation explores three writers who developed a similar literary strategy at such times: they pushed fictionality toward and beyond its limits, but ultimately preserved that fictionality, revealing new value in fiction after challenging it. Virginia Woolf, Samuel R. Delany, and J. M. Coetzee shaped their writings at these moments to provide readers with an experience that I argue is congruent with the goals of critical pedagogy as espoused by Paulo Freire, bell hooks, and others. Such a reading experience avoids an …

Working Alliances: The Implications Of Person-Centered Theory For Student-Teacher Relationships And Learning, Adam Parker Cogbill May 2018

Working Alliances: The Implications Of Person-Centered Theory For Student-Teacher Relationships And Learning, Adam Parker Cogbill

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation project, I interview four therapists and four writing teachers to learn if there were any significant similarities in differences in their approaches to dyadic relationships with students and clients. By dyadic, I mean what happens between individuals in a 1-on-1 setting when subjectivities collide. I was guided in my investigation by the core concepts of person-centered theory, which have heavily influenced the work of clinical therapists for the past half-century or more. These concepts are congruence, or whether one’s behaviors and speech match what one is feeling; empathy, the process of entering and becoming familiar with another’s …

The Activity Of Becoming A Second-Career Teacher, Michael Hildebrandt May 2018

The Activity Of Becoming A Second-Career Teacher, Michael Hildebrandt

Doctoral Dissertations

This is a study of three second-career teachers’ experiences of self transformation and the processes of socialization and identity formation each undergoes during his or her first three to five years as a full-time teacher. Each narrative offers a means through which to explore how liminal identity is at play during the transition to a new career—an experience that reshapes the experiences and self-understandings of individuals in the process of becoming teachers. The narratives that emerge from in-depth interviews showcase individuals with multi-faceted lives who have engaged in a multitude of personal and professional activities throughout their life course and …

Can You Hear Me Now? The Moderating Effects Of Procedural Justice Within Consumer-Brand Relationships, Alexander Blandina May 2018

Can You Hear Me Now? The Moderating Effects Of Procedural Justice Within Consumer-Brand Relationships, Alexander Blandina

Doctoral Dissertations

Consumer-brand relationships have led consumers to expect fair outcomes (i.e., distributive justice) consistent with their relationship norms with a brand. Deviation from these norms produced intuitive consequences such as a reduction of consumer loyalty and trust towards the brand. Yet, 65-85% of consumers still counterintuitively defect to a brand’s competitor. According to consumers, aspects of procedural justice qualitatively appeared to be major components that affected their attitudes towards brands. However, the effect of this construct within relationship norms has been underexamined, producing an empirical gap. The purpose of this dissertation was to bridge this gap by identifying the effect procedural …

Ultrasonic Vocalizations And Stress Resilience: Behavioral And Neurobiological Correlates, Nathaniel P. Stafford May 2018

Ultrasonic Vocalizations And Stress Resilience: Behavioral And Neurobiological Correlates, Nathaniel P. Stafford

Doctoral Dissertations

When we are exposed to a traumatic or stressful life event, some individuals may develop symptoms of anxiety or depression while others may appear unaffected. In humans and nonhuman organisms, the ability to cope plays a large role in how an organism responds to a stressor, and this coping may be influenced by innate mechanisms. We have identified the use of ultrasonic vocalizations during intermittent swim stress (ISS) to forecast innate behavioral differences in stress reactivity. Vocalizing rats are resilient as they exhibit less cognitive impairment, motivational changes, and fewer anxiety-like behaviors typically observed post-ISS. Resilience should be associated with …

"There's No Way A College Can Close": Student Experiences In A For-Profit Institution Closure, Jennifer M. Logsdon May 2018

"There's No Way A College Can Close": Student Experiences In A For-Profit Institution Closure, Jennifer M. Logsdon

Doctoral Dissertations

Higher education in the United States has always been considered a pathway for individuals to achieve professional, personal, and socio-economic success. For-profit colleges claim that the for-profit sector provides a service to a demographic of the population neglected by traditional institutions. Since the enactment of neoliberal policy increasing the for-profit sectors participation in federally funded programs, there have been concerns raised regarding the impact of this sector on the lives of the students it serves. Additionally, as for-profit institutions struggle to adhere to federal guidelines, a number of institutions have closed their doors, making it necessary for students to find …

Improvements In Speech Of Children With Apraxia: The Efficacy Of A Treatment For Establishing Motor Program Organization (Tempo), Hilary Miller May 2018

Improvements In Speech Of Children With Apraxia: The Efficacy Of A Treatment For Establishing Motor Program Organization (Tempo), Hilary Miller

Master's Theses and Capstones

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder characterized by distorted phonemes, segmentation (increased segment and intersegment durations), and impaired production of lexical stress. This study investigated the efficacy of Treatment for Establishing Motor Program Organization (TEMPO) in nine participants (ages 5 to 8) using a delayed treatment group design. Children received four weeks of intervention for four days each week. Experimental probes were administered at baseline and post-treatment—both immediately and one month after treatment—for treated and untreated stimuli. Significant improvements in specific acoustic measures of segmentation and lexical stress were demonstrated following treatment for both the immediate …

Assessment Of Campus Recreational Sport Programs, Eric Dorata May 2018

Assessment Of Campus Recreational Sport Programs, Eric Dorata

Master's Theses and Capstones

Student development and health issues among college students are becoming a major concern for academic institutions. To address these issues, universities offer campus recreational sport programs that encourage physical activity and healthy lifestyles. There is a robust literature regarding the benefits of general campus recreation participation; however, little research has explored participants’ perception of benefits related to certain campus recreation programming.

This study examined data from Intramural Sports and Sport Club participants at a northern New England university (n = 324). Survey questions assessed students’ transferable skills and general health perceptions. Results indicated that several transferable skills and health perceptions …

Drinking Behaviors And Health In Old Age, Kaleigh Knapp May 2018

Drinking Behaviors And Health In Old Age, Kaleigh Knapp

Master's Theses and Capstones

Alcohol abuse among the elderly population is rapidly becoming a widespread public health concern. As it goes undetected and undiagnosed in many within this age cohort, there is an increased need to further examine the effects of alcohol consumption on physical and mental health. This study investigated how and to what extent drinking behaviors affect physical and mental health in older people. Data came from the 2012 and 2014 Health and Retirement study, a nationally representative survey of Americans aged 51 and older. Our sample was restricted to people who participated in both waves of the survey from 2012 and …
