Summer Camp As A Force For 21st Century Learning: Exploring Divergent Thinking And Activity Selection In A Residential Camp Setting, Myles Lynch, Jonathan A. Plucker, C Boyd Hegarty, Nate Trauntvein
Education
This study investigated change in divergent thinking (DT), an indicator of creative potential, at two gender-specific residential summer camps. Additionally, this study examined whether the change in DT varied by gender and by the type of activities campers self-select. Quantitative methods, using a quasi-experimental design was used in order to understand differences in camper scores. A total of 189 youth, 100 girls, 89 boys, between the ages of 9 and 14 years participated in the current study. Participants were administered a modified version of Guilford's (1967) alternate uses task, a measure of DT, in which respondents were asked questions such …

Organizational Impact Of A Toxic Personality, Ryan White
Organizational Impact Of A Toxic Personality, Ryan White
M.S. in Leadership
In order to truly calculate the cost of allowing toxic personalities to operate within an organization, leaders must recognize the second and third-order effects that result when these people are left unchecked. This research explored how a toxic personality impacts an organization and focused on the effects of these personalities from two different aspects: the organizational and the individual. The goal was to draw attention to the extent of the impact these personalities can have on an organization's culture, climate, personnel, and overall performance. The repercussions resulting extend far beyond just fiscal aspects; they spread into the psychological and sociological …

Conservation Of The Lion: Preventing An Africa Without The African Lion, Courtney Kamyk
Conservation Of The Lion: Preventing An Africa Without The African Lion, Courtney Kamyk
Inquiry Journal 2018
The African lion (Panthera leo) population is diminishing rapidly, approximately 43 percent since 1993. The species is currently listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). With numerous threats to current populations including human conflict, prey depletion, and habitat loss, the African lion is in danger of becoming endangered, or even critically endangered, in the near future. Ex-situ conservation is a proposed method of restoring populations. My research at the African Lion and Environmental Research Trust (ALERT) in Zambia focused on correlations of boldness with natural behaviors and sociality to help further understand individual …

Burned Out Or Trapped In Conscientiousness: A Case Study Of Three Nh Middle School Teachers, Shaleen Cassily
Burned Out Or Trapped In Conscientiousness: A Case Study Of Three Nh Middle School Teachers, Shaleen Cassily
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to explore the nature of teachers’ experiences of burnout and teacher self-efficacy, and the relationship between these two constructs. Although the research has demonstrated a well-established relationship between burnout and teacher self-efficacy, the exact dynamic between these two constructs is open to debate (Skaalvik & Skaalvik, 2010). Additionally, most of the existing research around burnout and teacher self-efficacy is quantitative. Therefore, this study investigated these two constructs qualitatively in order to gain a deeper understanding of the way teachers construct meaning about their experiences of burnout and how they feel, think, and explain their …
How Servant Leadership Shapes Social Identity To Promote A High Performing Team, Melissa Theriault
How Servant Leadership Shapes Social Identity To Promote A High Performing Team, Melissa Theriault
M.S. in Leadership
Social identity is the concept that an individual's sense of self is comprised of group memberships and communities as well as individual traits. Research shows that there is a correlation between a common shared social identity and high team performance. Servant leadership, a leadership style characterized by the willingness of a leader to serve his followers, has the potential to bridge the gap between the development of social identity and increased team performance. Servant leaders are perceived as part of team rather than separate and are able to quickly build trust with their team members due to their nurturing leadership …
Uncovering How Occupational Therapy Could Benefit Individuals Living With Sickle Cell Disease In Ghana, Carolyn D'Olympio
Uncovering How Occupational Therapy Could Benefit Individuals Living With Sickle Cell Disease In Ghana, Carolyn D'Olympio
Inquiry Journal 2018
In 2017, with funding from a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), I spent ten weeks in Kumasi, Ghana conducting research on how occupational therapy may be beneficial for individuals living with sickle cell disease. At the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, I conducted multiple interviews with five individuals living with sickle cell disease. I also traveled to the homes of these individuals to observe how their home environment may be influencing their ability to engage in everyday life with sickle cell disease, and I interviewed healthcare practitioners about the types of services available for these patients. Through my …

Facilitating Meaningful Change Within U.S. Law Schools, Patrick H. Gaughan
Facilitating Meaningful Change Within U.S. Law Schools, Patrick H. Gaughan
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
Despite the widely recognized challenges and complaints facing U.S. legal education, very little is understood about how law schools can adapt faster and better. This Article uses institutional theory, behavioral economics, and psychology to explain why change has proven so difficult for U.S. law schools. Next, using institutional entrepreneurship, the Article explains the theoretical steps necessary to overcome the institutional resistance to change. The Article then discusses the characteristics of opportunities that are most likely to better meet the needs of law students while also providing sustainable benefits to the individually innovating law schools. Using management theory, the Article then …

Recreation-based health and wellness programs for military service members are currently a topic of significant interest in the recreation and health industries. This study examined the health outcomes associated with participation in Project Sanctuary, a week-long recreation-based health and wellness family retreat for injured military service members. Linear mixed modeling was used to examine changes in health outcomes over four time points, and considered multiple covariates. One-hundred twenty-seven service members participated. Statistically significant reductions in total scores for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL) measures were found, as well as notable improvements in Depression, Anxiety, and Atress Scale (DASS) and mental …
