How To Begin, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore Sep 2018

How To Begin, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore

Communication

This article introduces the special issue of Research on Language and Social Interaction organized around the theme “Opening and Maintaining Face-to-Face Interaction.” The contributions to this special issue collectively consider “how to begin”—either a new encounter or a new sequence after a lapse in conversation. All articles analyze naturally occurring, video-recorded episodes of casual and/or institutional copresent interaction using multimodal conversation analytic methods. Though the opening phase of a face-to-face encounter may elapse in a matter of seconds, this article shows it to house a dense universe of phenomena central to sustaining our human sense of self and our social …

Arriving: Expanding The Personal State Sequence, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore Sep 2018

Arriving: Expanding The Personal State Sequence, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore

Communication

When arriving to a social encounter, how and when can a person show how s/he is doing/feeling? This article answers this question, examining personal state sequences in copresent openings of casual (residential) and institutional (parent-teacher) encounters. Describing a regular way participants constitute—and move to expand—these sequences, this research shows how arrivers display a nonneutral (e.g., negative, humorous, positive) personal state by both (1) deploying interactionally timed stance-marking embodiments that enact a nonneutral state, and (2) invoking a selected previous activity/experience positioned as precipitating that nonneutral state. Data demonstrate that arrivers time their nonneutral personal state displays calibrated to their understanding …

Poly-Victimization: A Broad Assessment Of Childhood Victimization And Its Implications For Juvenile Justice And Child Well-Being, Yahayra Michel-Smith Sep 2018

Poly-Victimization: A Broad Assessment Of Childhood Victimization And Its Implications For Juvenile Justice And Child Well-Being, Yahayra Michel-Smith

Doctoral Dissertations

Objective: The objective of this dissertation is twofold. The first objective is to summarize the literature on poly-victimization (PV) with a focus on what relationships have been tested and how poly-victimization has been operationalized in the field. The second objective is to replicate and expand the literature by empirically testing the effect of poly-victimization on delinquency.

Design, Data, and Participants. This dissertation employs a mixed method approach made up of a systematic literature review and secondary data analysis. The systematic literature review summarizes 59 poly-victimization articles published between 2007 and 2017 that contain the terms “poly-victim” or “poly-victimization” in its …

Mother-Child Conversations About Other People: The Role Of Mothers’ Personal Intelligence, Erin Marie Kenney Sep 2018

Mother-Child Conversations About Other People: The Role Of Mothers’ Personal Intelligence, Erin Marie Kenney

Doctoral Dissertations

The dissertation focuses on two studies that explore an intriguing context in which variations in personal intelligence are apparent: the way parents talk with their children about other people. Fifty 6-9 year-olds and their mothers participated in Study 1. Study 1 documented individual differences in mother-child conversations about others and their relationship with mothers’ personal intelligence and children’s conversational variables, and also examined children’s use of trait labels and social behavior ratings. Forty-two 4-5 year-olds and 43 7-8 year-olds participated in Study 2 with their mothers. Study 2 replicated many of Study 1 findings, including significant correlations between mothers’ conversational …

A Human Visual System Inspired Feature Recognition Method Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Evan Koester Sep 2018

A Human Visual System Inspired Feature Recognition Method Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Evan Koester

Master's Theses and Capstones

While significant strides in neural network and machine vision applications have been made in recent years, humans still remain the most proficient at feature extraction and pattern recognition tasks. Some researchers have attempted to utilize select aspects of the human visual system in order to perform application-specific visual tasks. However, none have been able to develop a computational model of the biological human visual system that can perform the many complex pattern recognition tasks that we do as humans. This thesis focuses on significant improvements to an existing human visual system model created by N. Radhi, and the novel implementation …

Conflict Resolution In Popular Film, Linda M. Fogg Sep 2018

Conflict Resolution In Popular Film, Linda M. Fogg

Master's Theses and Capstones

Studies on media content have been focused for decades on the frequency of violence, types of aggression, and sex roles. These studies have largely focused on children’s media, especially Disney, with few investigating the presence of violence in adult media as it is perceived as less harmful. Although these are all important topics of research, they have failed to incorporate the larger picture of media's portrayal of conflict resolution. This study aims to answer the questions: how is conflict resolution portrayed in popular films and does it change based on the MPAA rating? using popular movies from 2016. The ratings …

Predictability Matters: Role Of The Hippocampus And Prefrontal Cortex In Disambiguation Of Overlapping Sequences, Justine E. Cohen, Robert Ross, Chantal E. Stern Aug 2018

Predictability Matters: Role Of The Hippocampus And Prefrontal Cortex In Disambiguation Of Overlapping Sequences, Justine E. Cohen, Robert Ross, Chantal E. Stern

Faculty Publications

Previous research has demonstrated that areas in the medial temporal lobe and prefrontal cortex (PFC) show increased activation during retrieval of overlapping sequences. In this study, we designed a task in which degree of overlap varied between conditions in order to parse out the contributions of hippocampal and prefrontal subregions as overlap between associations increased. In the task, participants learned sequential associations consisting of a picture frame, a face within the picture frame, and an outdoor scene. The control condition consisted of a single frame-face-scene sequence. In the low overlap condition, each frame was paired with two faces and two …

Modelling Competencies For Computing Education Beyond 2020: A Research Based Approach To Defining Competencies In The Computing Disciplines, Stephen Thomas Frezza, Mats Daniels, Arnold N. Pears, Asa Cajander, Viggo Kann, Amanpreet Kapoor, Roger Mcdermott, Anne Kahtrin Peters, Mihaela Sabin, Charles Robert Wallace

Applied Engineering and Sciences Scholarship

How might the content and outcomes of tertiary education programmes be described and analysed in order to understand how they are structured and function? To address this question we develop a framework for modelling graduate competencies linked to tertiary degree programmes in the computing disciplines. While the focus of our work is computing the framework is applicable to education more broadly.

The work presented here draws upon the pioneering curricular document for information technology (IT2017), curricular competency frameworks, other related documents such as the software engineering competency model (SWECOM), the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA), current research in …

Social Integration And Suicide Rates In Japan: An Analysis, Emily Haley Jul 2018

Social Integration And Suicide Rates In Japan: An Analysis, Emily Haley

Perspectives

Japan has seen extreme changes in its social structures since the end of the 1800s. Before 1868, Japan practiced an exclusionary foreign policy known as sakoku (Japanese for “seclusion”), keeping Western influence out of the country for hundreds of years (Perez 1998:62). The end of this period, however, came with an intense modernization of Japan known as the Meiji Restoration (Stanlaw 2017). From this point to the present day, Japan has seen an increase in Western social structures and values, all while trying to retain aspects of its collectivist society. The economic growth of Japan was halted with the 1990 …

A Global Crime Against Women: Sex Trafficking And Its Consequences, Breezy Ferreira Jul 2018

A Global Crime Against Women: Sex Trafficking And Its Consequences, Breezy Ferreira

Perspectives

Sex trafficking, a form of gender-based violence in which a specific gender is the target of violence due to the imbalance of power, is a common present-day global crime (Murturi 2006:83). Women are most often victims of this specific crime, (Muturi 2006:83) and it leaves many workers and victims with health implications such as obtaining HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (Macias Konstantopoulos et al. 2013:1194). This paper will begin by giving a brief overview of the definition of sex trafficking, before discussing a specific country’s challenge with the problem. I will then analyze the scope of this issue based …

Reducing Able-Bodied Entitlement: The Effects Of Education, Privilege Acknowledgment, And Inter-Group Contact, Remy Frost Jul 2018

Reducing Able-Bodied Entitlement: The Effects Of Education, Privilege Acknowledgment, And Inter-Group Contact, Remy Frost

Perspectives

Too often, socially privileged individuals act in ways that display entitlement, ignorance, or disregard for marginalized people, even when they are educated about the dynamics of oppression and privilege. Because education alone may not be sufficient to reduce prejudices held by the privileged, it is necessary to determine which additional factors most effectively motivate privileged individuals to embody support for the marginalized in their everyday actions. One such factor identified as influential in the cultivation of inter-group harmony is inter-group contact. In this research, I focus on able-bodied people and their sense of entitlement to their surroundings; specifically, I examine …
