Oral Health Care Access In New Hampshire, Eleanor M. Jaffee, Joan Widmer, Lisa Speropolous
Oral Health Care Access In New Hampshire, Eleanor M. Jaffee, Joan Widmer, Lisa Speropolous
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Eleanor M. Jaffee, Joan Widmer, and Lisa I. Speropolous provide an overview of the current state of oral health care in New Hampshire. They report that although New Hampshire is rated above the national average on most measures of pediatric oral health, performance varies substantially by county and by region. Access to adequate oral health care for both children and adults is particularly challenging for low-income families in the sparsely populated northern region of the state. Programs that address oral health care access issues by bringing services to those with the greatest need, such as school-based …

Child Protective Services May Link Families To Needed Income Supports, Wendy A. Walsh, Marybeth J. Mattingly
Carsey Publications
A number of public safety-net programs exist to help improve the economic well-being of vulnerable children, but little is known about the extent to which families with a child maltreatment report receive these services over time. In this brief, we examine the incidence of receiving four types of income support both immediately after the child maltreatment report and eighteen months following. The data for this analysis come from the second National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW II), a national sample of children who had a maltreatment report that resulted in an investigation by CPS within a 15-month period …
Nineteenth-Century Bahia's Passion For British Salted Cod: From The Seas Of Newfoundland To The Portuguese Shops Of Salvador's Cidade Baixa, 1822-1914, Marc W. Herold
Economics
Dried cod has played a similar role to sugar in the international chain of commerce. It became a major traded commodity between British North America (Newfoundland, Nova Scotia Gaspe) in the nineteenth century. Cheap cod fed the slaves who grew and produced the sugar (and coffee and cotton) which in turn energised the workers of the Industrial Revolution who worked the machines which made the commodities of empire. The machines in factories and their output provided the material basis of Empire. Sugar and cod were important in the cultures of Britain, Newfoundland, the West Indies, West Africa and Brazil. Demand …

A Community Schools Approach To Accessing Services And Improving Neighborhood Outcomes In Manchester, Nh, Justin R. Young
Carsey Publications
This brief uses data collected by the Manchester Health Department in 2013 and analyzed by the Carsey School of Public Policy in the Bakersville, Beech Street, and Gossler Park neighborhoods in Manchester, New Hampshire, to provide information about how barriers to various dimensions of well-being differ by place and also across race/ethnicity, foreign-born status, and age. Survey data and focus groups also gave residents a voice in the implementation of the Manchester Community Schools Project—a partnership between the Manchester Health Department, city elementary schools, philanthropists, neighborhood residents, and several nonprofit agencies—to improve and enhance educational achievement, economic well-being, access to …

Developing Critical Social Justice Literacy In An Online Seminar, Elizabeth Bondy, Elyse Hambacher, Amy S. Murphy, Rachel Wolkenhauer, Desirae Eva Krell
Education
The purpose of this article is to report on an effort to cultivate a critical social justice perspective and critical social justice praxis among educators enrolled in an online graduate program. Although the entire program was organized around themes of equity, collaboration, and leadership, this study focused on educators’ perspectives of the purposes, pedagogy, and outcomes of one course, Critical Pedagogy. Fourteen of the 19 students enrolled in the online course participated in one of six online focus groups following the conclusion of the course. Using constructivist grounded theory methods, the researchers identified the different ways in which students responded …

Deconstructing And Reconstructing Rights For Immigrant Children, Erin B. Corcoran
Deconstructing And Reconstructing Rights For Immigrant Children, Erin B. Corcoran
Law Faculty Scholarship
Children rights advocates and scholars alike continue to call for the development of innovative and alternative rights models, which specifically provide for an expansive conceptualization of children’s rights. Central to their calls for reform is a simultaneous recognition that children’s rights must embody agency – a child’s voice (a proxy for autonomy) – free from governmental interference, as well as the establishment of certain fundamental “needs” that place an affirmative obligation on the State to ensure the child has, and affirmatively provide, when necessary. Reimagining children’s rights also requires reforming our laws in such a way that reflects children as …

Abstract.
Ecological research is increasingly concentrated at particular locations or sites. This trend reflects a variety of advantages of intensive, site-based research, but also raises important questions about the nature of such spatially delimited research: how well does site based research represent broader areas, and does it constrain scientific discovery? We provide an overview of these issues with a particular focus on one prominent intensive research site: the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF), New Hampshire, USA. Among the key features of intensive sites are: long-term, archived data sets that provide a context for new discoveries and the elucidation of ecological mechanisms; …
Seasonal Movements Of American Lobsters In Southern Gulf Of Maine Coastal Waters: Patterns, Environmental Triggers, And Implications For Larval Release, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Jason S. Goldstein
Seasonal Movements Of American Lobsters In Southern Gulf Of Maine Coastal Waters: Patterns, Environmental Triggers, And Implications For Larval Release, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Jason S. Goldstein
Jackson Estuarine Laboratory
American lobsters Homarus americanus are known to move offshore during the fall-to-winter transition and inshore, into shallower, warmer water in the spring and summer. To determine whether all types of lobsters in New Hampshire coastal waters exhibit this movement pattern, we fitted 45 lobsters (ovigerous and non-ovigerous females, and males) with ultrasonic transmitters and tracked their movements over 3 successive seasons from 2006 to 2009. The major goals of this study were to determine (1) if ovigerous females express different seasonal movement patterns than males or non-ovigerous females; (2) what environmental cues might trigger offshore movements in the fall; and …

New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications
Background: A high-throughput genotyping platform is needed to enable marker-assisted breeding in the allo-octoploid cultivated strawberry Fragaria × ananassa. Short-read sequences from one diploid and 19 octoploid accessions were aligned to the diploid Fragaria vesca ‘Hawaii 4’ reference genome to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and indels for incorporation into a 90 K Affymetrix® Axiom® array. We report the development and preliminary evaluation of this array.
Results: About 36 million sequence variants were identified in a 19 member, octoploid germplasm panel. Strategies and filtering pipelines were developed to identify and incorporate markers of several types: di-allelic SNPs (66.6%), multi-allelic SNPs …
