Despite Buffers, Experimental Forest Clearcuts Impact Amphibian Body Size And Biomass, Jessica S. Veysey Powell, Kimberly J. Babbitt
New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications
Forest buffers are a primary tool used to protect wetland-dependent wildlife. Though implemented widely, buffer efficacy is untested for most amphibian species. Consequently, it remains unclear whether buffers are sufficient for maintaining amphibian populations and if so, how wide buffers should be. We present evidence from a six-year, landscape-scale experiment testing the impacts of clearcutting, buffer width, and hydroperiod on body size and condition and biomass of breeding adults for two amphibian species at 11 vernal pools in the northeastern United States. We randomly assigned treatments (i.e., reference, 100m buffer, 30m buffer) across pools, clearcut to create buffers, and captured …

Although Child Poverty Declined In 2014, Persistent Racial And Ethnic Disadvantages Remain, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Andrew P. Schaefer, Jess Carson
Carsey Publications
Poverty data from the American Community Survey were released on September 17, 2015, allowing a detailed examination of poverty in 2014 across the United States. In this brief, authors Beth Mattingly, Andrew Schaefer, and Jessica Carson discuss changes in child poverty between 2013 and 2014 and since 2009, just after the Great Recession ended. They report that in 2014, 21.7 percent of children were poor, representing a modest, but statistically significant decline since 2013 (by 0.6 percentage point), but still 1.7 percentage points higher than in 2009. Though cities and rural places remain home to the highest rates of child …

Official Poverty Statistics Mask The Economic Vulnerability Of Seniors A Comparison Of Maine To The Nation An, Andrew P. Schaefer, Marybeth J. Mattingly
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Andrew Schaefer and Beth Mattingly compare Maine, one of the oldest states in the nation, to the United States as a whole. Historically, both children and the elderly were regarded as vulnerable groups in need of support from government programs. Traditional poverty estimates suggest that at least since the late 1960s, senior poverty has been on the decline, whereas poverty among children has increased.
Declines among seniors are largely attributable to the advent of programs such as Social Security. Similar to the nation, about half of Maine seniors (51.0 percent) would be poor without Social Security …
Soil Nitrogen Affects Phosphorus Recycling: Foliar Resorption And Plant–Soil Feedbacks In A Northern Hardwood Forest, Craig R. See, Ruth D. Yanai, Melany C. Fisk, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur, Braulio A. Quintero, Timothy J. Fahey
Soil Nitrogen Affects Phosphorus Recycling: Foliar Resorption And Plant–Soil Feedbacks In A Northern Hardwood Forest, Craig R. See, Ruth D. Yanai, Melany C. Fisk, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur, Braulio A. Quintero, Timothy J. Fahey
All Materials
Previous studies have attempted to link foliar resorption of nitrogen and phosphorus to their respective availabilities in soil, with mixed results. Based on resource optimization theory, we hypothesized that the foliar resorption of one element could be driven by the availability of another element. We tested various measures of soil N and P as predictors of N and P resorption in six tree species in 18 plots across six stands at the Bartlett Experimental Forest, New Hampshire, USA. Phosphorus resorption efficiency (P , 0.01) and proficiency (P ¼ 0.01) increased with soil N content to 30 cm depth, suggesting that …

The fact that the population of the United States is aging is no surprise; the demographic projections are well documented. There have never been as many older adults living as there are today, and this number will only increase. Northern New England is aging more rapidly than the rest of the country, with Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire having the oldest populations in term of median age (U.S. Census, 2014). New Hampshire is expected to be the fastest aging state in New England through 2030, with nearly one-third of its population being over the age of 65 (Norton, 2011). This …

Behind At The Starting Line: Poverty Among Hispanic Infants, Daniel T. Lichter, Scott R. Sanders, Kenneth M. Johnson
Behind At The Starting Line: Poverty Among Hispanic Infants, Daniel T. Lichter, Scott R. Sanders, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Daniel Lichter, Scott Sanders, and Kenneth Johnson examine the economic circumstances of Hispanic infants using the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey annual microdata files from 2006 through 2010. They report that a disproportionate share of Hispanic infants start life’s race behind the starting line, poor and disadvantaged—an important finding because the proportion of all U.S. births that are Hispanic is growing rapidly. The poverty risk is especially high among rural Hispanic infants and those in new destinations. Despite higher poverty risks, Hispanic infants receive less governmental assistance. High Hispanic infant poverty has immediate and long-term consequences …

Long-Term Trends Of Changes In Pine And Oak Foliar Nitrogen Metabolism In Response To Chronic Nitrogen Amendments At Harvard Forest, Ma, Rakesh Minocha, Swathi A. Turlapati, Stephanie Long, William H. Mcdowell, Subhash C. Minocha
New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications
We evaluated the long-term (1995–2008) trends in foliar and sapwood metabolism, soil solution chemistry and tree mortality rates in response to chronic nitrogen (N) additions to pine and hardwood stands at the Harvard Forest Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site. Common stress-related metabolites like polyamines (PAs), free amino acids (AAs) and inorganic elements were analyzed for control, low N (LN, 50 kg NH4NO3 ha−1 year−1) and high N (HN, 150 kg NH4NO3 ha−1 year−1) treatments. In the pine stands, partitioning of excess N into foliar PAs and AAs increased with both N treatments until 2002. By 2005, several of these …
Rates Of Snap Receipt Stabilize Or Drop In All Regions For First Time Since Great Recession, Jess Carson, Paul Anskat
Rates Of Snap Receipt Stabilize Or Drop In All Regions For First Time Since Great Recession, Jess Carson, Paul Anskat
Carsey Publications
This brief uses data from the American Community Survey to document rates of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) receipt in 2013, to track changes since the onset of the recession in 2007, and to monitor receipt by region and across rural places, suburbs, and cities. In addition, it examines levels of SNAP receipt among potentially vulnerable populations to determine how receipt has changed among these groups since the recession began. Authors Jessica A. Carson and Paul Anskat report that the share of households receiving SNAP benefits declined slightly between 2012 and 2013 from 13.6 to 13.5 percent, the first decrease …

Many Eligible Children Don’T Participate In School Nutrition Programs; Reauthorization Offers Opportunities To Improve, Jess Carson
Carsey Publications
This brief uses data from the 2013 Current Population Survey’s Food Security Supplement to document levels of participation in two of the largest programs authorized by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010—the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program—by region and place type (rural, suburban, and city), to identify areas where expanding participation may be especially important. Author Jessica Carson reports that only 64 percent of eligible households participate in the National School Lunch Program, and 52 percent participate in the School Breakfast Program. Fifty-nine percent of eligible suburban households and 63 percent of rural households participate …
