Representations Of Women: A Media Intentions And Effects Analysis Of The Popular Music Industry, Emily A. Bourne
Representations Of Women: A Media Intentions And Effects Analysis Of The Popular Music Industry, Emily A. Bourne
Comm-entary
This thesis features a critical media effects analysis of the present United States music industry. Popular music and its associated production and promotion industry is overwhelmingly dominated by men and is correspondingly subject to the influence of dominant cultural ideologies. These ideologies include the oppression and marginalization of women and the furthering of their subordinate status within American culture. The projection of these inherently unjust principles not only reinscribes pre-established societal status quos, but also influences the general public to further internalize, develop, and reproduce them. These prompted understandings contribute to the lacking power and equality of women in society …

Hegel’S Pragmatism, Willem A. Devries
Hegel’S Pragmatism, Willem A. Devries
Faculty Publications
This chapter examines Hegel’s complex relation to pragmatism. After a short review of the extant literature on their relation, deVries focuses on their shared rejection of the Cartesian tradition, which assumes that minds are immaterial, self-contained substances that are (1) transparent to themselves, (2) known directly or immediately to themselves, (3) prior to and independently of any knowledge of any other created substance, e.g., the external world. Hegel and the pragmatists rejected this view for at least three reasons. (1) The Cartesians employ an impoverished conception of experience that does not do justice to the complex interplay of the sensory …

Nh Divided On Trump's, Federal Government's Covid-19 Response 4/23/2020, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
As the country continues to deal with the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, a majority of New Hampshire residents disapprove of how President Donald Trump is handling the crisis. Granite Staters are divided in their confidence in the federal government's ability to respond effectively to the situation largely along partisan lines. Three in four New Hampshire residents are very or somewhat worried that they or a member of their immediate family might catch coronavirus.

Granite Staters Approve Of Sununu's Handling Of Coronavirus, Stay At Home Order 4/22/2020, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
Nine in ten Granite Staters approve of the job Governor Chris Sununu has done handling the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. A similarly large majority support Sununu's "stay at home" order for the state. Granite Staters say maintaining the stay at home order is more important than re-opening the NH economy by a two-to-one margin. Majorities of Granite Staters believe that state beaches, gyms, and churches should be closed during the stay at home order, while a plurality believe that state parks should stay open during the order.

Can Utilitarianism Improve The Us Criminal Justice System? An Evaluation Of Punishment And The Utility Calculus, Piper Gibson
Can Utilitarianism Improve The Us Criminal Justice System? An Evaluation Of Punishment And The Utility Calculus, Piper Gibson
Inquiry Journal 2020
During the summer of 2019 I had the opportunity to participate in the Research Experience and Apprenticeship Program (REAP) under the mentorship of Professor Nick Smith at the University of New Hampshire. In this commentary I introduce the research I completed during this program. I discuss the philosophy of utilitarianism, which was first popularized by European philosophers Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill during the late eighteenth and nineteenth century, and explore how their utility calculus can be used to justify and prescribe punishments. I criticize the utility calculus’s reliance on standard sentencing and other logistical issues associated with the …

2020 Nh Primary Voters Found It Easy To Vote, Confident Vote Was Counted Accurately 4/14/2020, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
The vast majority of voters in New Hampshire's "First in the Nation" primary found it easy to vote; more than ninety percent of primary participants said it was very or somewhat easy to vote while only one in twenty said it was somewhat or very difficult to do so. More than four in five primary voters were very confident their vote was accurately counted while nearly all of the rest were somewhat confident. When asked about a month before the election, likely voters had been slightly more pessimistic about their perceived ease of voting in the primary and their confidence …

Living In A World Where Seeing Is No Longer Believing: Artificial Intelligence As A Disinformation Engine, Dylan Wheeler
Living In A World Where Seeing Is No Longer Believing: Artificial Intelligence As A Disinformation Engine, Dylan Wheeler
Inquiry Journal 2020
With the help of my mentor, Professor Nick Smith, during the summer of 2019, I researched how new developments in artificial intelligence are enabling the mass manufacture and distribution of fake news. Looking specifically at deepfakes, a form of fake news that uses picture-perfect face swapping, I examined how new computer software makes it trivial for anyone in the world to manufacture disinformation, false information spread deliberately to deceive the masses. I believe that, if we are not careful, we could enter a post-truth future, where the truth about issues becomes overshadowed by emotionally charged headlines and discourse. With few …

Media, Gender, And National Identity In Almaty, Kazakhstan, Darby O'Neil
Media, Gender, And National Identity In Almaty, Kazakhstan, Darby O'Neil
Inquiry Journal 2020
Kazakhstan is the largest country in central Asia, in terms of both land size and economy. Historically, Kazakhstan was a nomadic society with gender roles based on gendered division of labor. But throughout three centuries of colonial rule, first by Imperial Russia and then by the Soviet Union, Kazakh society and gender roles were transformed by various colonial policies. After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, however, Kazakhstan was suddenly an independent country and was faced for the first time with creating a unique national identity and idea of what it means to be Kazakh. This has led the Kazakh …
Indolic Glucosinolate Pathway Provides Resistance To Mycorrhizal Fungal Colonization In A Non-Host Brassicaceae, Mark A. Anthony, J. L. Celenza, A. Armstrong, Serita D. Frey
Indolic Glucosinolate Pathway Provides Resistance To Mycorrhizal Fungal Colonization In A Non-Host Brassicaceae, Mark A. Anthony, J. L. Celenza, A. Armstrong, Serita D. Frey
Faculty Publications
Most terrestrial plants form mycorrhizas, but a number of agricultural plants, including the Brassicaceae, are non-mycorrhizal. Brassicaceae can still be colonized by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), but species like Arabidopsis thaliana experience growth reductions following AMF colonization at similar magnitude to that of fungal pathogen infections and lack key genes necessary for nutrient exchange. Arabidopsis also produces specific secondary compounds via the modification of tryptophan, including indolic glucosinolates (IGs), which have anti-fungal properties and may therefore be involved in reducing AMF colonization. This study therefore addressed whether the ability to produce IGs facilitates resistance to AMF colonization and growth suppression. …

Views Of A Fast-Moving Pandemic: A Survey Of Granite Staters’ Responses To Covid-19, Thomas G. Safford, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Thomas Safford and Lawrence Hamilton report the results of a Granite State Panel survey (March 17-26), asking New Hampshire residents about their views concerning government responses to the coronavirus (COVID-19) and whether they changed their daily routine because of the pandemic. They report that New Hampshire residents who approve of President Trump’s handling of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and those who regularly watch Fox News are less likely than others to have made major changes in their routines due to COVID-19. Granite Staters have polarized opinions about President Trump’s handling of the pandemic: 40 …

Professional Nurse-Led Unjani Clinics: Empowering The Nurse Entrepreneur, Bri Mcgrath
Inquiry Journal 2020
South Africa, burdened by a wide wealth gap, meets the healthcare needs of the minority with health insurance but provides unreliable services for the uninsured. The uninsured clients suffer from long public clinic wait times and poor-quality care. The Unjani model was launched to provide high-quality affordable primary health care (PHC) to employed but uninsured families. Unjani aims to empower black women nurses as entrepreneurs and providers by providing them with shipping containers converted into world-class health clinics. Although nurses are central to the Unjani model, there is no published research describing their experience. I performed a qualitative study to …
