Most Nh Republicans But Few Democrats Currently Comfortable With Public Activities In Light Of Covid-19 6/24/2020, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

New Hampshire residents are more comfortable than in May with participating in public activities, but levels of comfort differ dramatically based on partisanship. Majorities of Republicans say they are currently comfortable going to large-scale athletic competitions, political rallies, and concerts, while nearly half of Democrats say they will not be comfortable going to these events until 2021 at the earliest. Approval of Governor Sununu's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic has declined slightly among both Democrats and Republicans but remains high and most are confident in the state government's ability to respond effectively to the crisis. Concern about oneself or a …

Resilience Within And Resilience Without: Mindfulness And Sustainability Programming Using An Embedded Engineering Librarian Approach, Catherine Wong, Cynthia Helen Carlson

Faculty Publications

An increasing number of students are suffering from anxiety, even before the added stress of college life. Meanwhile, the media bombards students with images of impending doom about the climate crisis and environmental collapse, potentially increasing the sense of helplessness, fear, or anger. Fostering a sense of personal and environmental resilience through contemplative practices and engagement with sustainability topics in and out of the classroom was the goal of this librarian and professor collaborative team. The team created a culture of awareness for both sustainability and mindfulness via an in-class embedded librarian model, and out of class programming over a …

[Excerpt] This column is the third and final installment of a series considering some potential implications of June Medical Services v. Russo, a case involving a constitutional challenge to a Louisiana law regulating access to abortion services. The United States Supreme Court heard arguments in the case on March 4. A decision is expected shortly.

The first column sought to place June Medical Services in context by describing the history of constitutional abortion-rights litigation at the Supreme Court. The second explained what the case is likely to tell us about the respect the court will show to prior constitutional …

Carsey Publications

In this report, author Kristine Bundschuh identifies the benefits and barriers that emerging adults, age 18–25, perceive as they make the decision to stay in, leave, or return to Coös County, New Hampshire. The main draws to living in Coös are its family and community support systems. Those with local professional and educational plans, or who have purchased a home locally, experience additional benefits. Some emerging adults say they would live in Coös if it provided the employment opportunities, diverse communities, and amenities they seek.

Emphasis On Social Distancing Recedes In Nh But Most Still Not Leaving Home To Work Or Socialize 6/16/2020, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Granite Staters continue to prioritize social distancing over reopening the economy, but zeal for social distancing has waned over the past two months. Nearly all groups prioritize social distancing less than they did in early May, but Democrats and women continue to place greater emphasis on it than Republicans and men. Granite Staters are leaving their homes more frequently than in April or May, but most did not leave their home even once in the previous seven days to go to work or to socialize with those outside their household. Stress related to work and finances also continues to decline, …

Effects Of Socioeconomic Status And Race On Access To Healthcare In The United States, Madeline Ohlson

Perspectives

This literature review discusses the effects of an individual or community’s socioeconomic status and race on their access to healthcare in the United States as important and controversial. Health issues affect all Americans, yet inequalities still exist in the healthcare system. Aspects of socioeconomic status and race are prevalent factors in many social problems, especially in their significant influence on access to, quality of, and availability of healthcare that a person receives. The reviewed studies discuss how social stratification regarding socioeconomic status and race lead to disparities in the field of healthcare when discussing the quality of care, health insurance, …

Covid-19 Stress Continues To Decline Among Nh Residents 6/15/2020, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Stress among New Hampshire residents related to the COVID-19 pandemic continues to decline. Those under thirty, women, and registered Democrats remain more stressed than others. Symptoms of anxiety and depression have also declined, most notably among young people, but remain higher than under typical circumstances. Granite Staters continue to feel considerable stress concerning their family's health and emotional well-being and the care and education of their children, but relatively few are concerned about their own health, their finances or job, or being able to access food or supplies. As the weather improves and restrictions ease, nearly half of residents now …

Despite Increased Testing Capacity In Nh, Demand For Tests Wanes Among Granite Staters 6/10/2020, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Despite increasing testing capacity in the state, demand for testing among New Hampshire residents has declined considerably since May. Half of Granite Staters want or have already had an antibody test to determine if they have had COVID-19, down from more than three-quarters who wanted one in early May. Meanwhile, only one in seven residents want a test to determine if they currently have COVID-19. Many of those who would like these tests mention not knowing where to go to get a test, a lack of symptoms, and concerns about insurance or payment as reasons they have not yet been …

Identifying A Typology Of Emerging Adult Romantic Relationships: Implications For Relationship Education, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer, Tyler B. Jamison

Faculty Publications

Objective: Our objective was to use multiple romantic relationship dimensions to identify a typology of emerging adult romantic relationships.

Background: Emerging adult romantic relationships vary in terms of their relational dynamics, emotional and physical intimacy, and commitment. Understanding the diversity in emerging adult romantic relationships is crucial for developing effective relationship education for emerging adults as they make decisions about their romantic partnerships.

Method: Using data from 396 romantically involved but unmarried emerging adults, we used cluster analysis to identify a typology of romantic relationships based on relational dynamics (i.e., warmth and support and negative interactions), relationship duration, consolidation (i.e., …

KORUS-AQ was an international cooperative air quality field study in South Korea that measured local and remote sources of air pollution affecting the Korean Peninsula during May–June 2016. Some of the largest aerosol mass concentrations were measured during a Chinese haze transport event (24 May). Air quality forecasts using the WRF-Chem model with aerosol optical depth (AOD) data assimilation captured AOD during this pollution episode but overpredicted surface particulate matter concentrations in South Korea, especially PM2.5, often by a factor of 2 or larger. Analysis revealed multiple sources of model deficiency related to the calculation of optical properties from aerosol …

Heavy Metals In The Arctic: Distribution And Enrichment Of Five Metals In Alaskan Soils, Clarice R. Perryman, Jochen Wirsing, Kathryn A. Bennett, Owen Brennick, Apryl L. Perry, Nicole Williamson, Jessica G. Ernakovich

Faculty Publications

Metal contamination of food and water resources is a known public health issue in Arctic and sub-Arctic communities due to the proximity of many communities to mining and drilling sites. In addition, permafrost thaw may release heavy metals sequestered in previously frozen soils, potentially contaminating food and water resources by increasing the concentration of metals in freshwater, plants, and wildlife. Here we assess the enrichment of selected heavy metals in Alaskan soils by synthesizing publicly available data of soil metal concentrations. We analyzed data of soil concentrations of arsenic, chromium, mercury, nickel, and lead from over 1,000 samples available through …
