Using a new approach that constrains thermodynamic modeling of aerosol composition with measured gas-to-particle partitioning of inorganic nitrate, we estimate the acidity levels for aerosol sampled in the South Korean planetary boundary layer during the NASA/NIER KORUS-AQ field campaign. The pH (mean ± 1σ = 2.43 ± 0.68) and aerosol liquid water content determined were then used to determine the chemical regime of the inorganic fraction of particulate matter (PM) sensitivity to ammonia and nitrate availability. We found that the aerosol formation is always sensitive to HNO3 levels, especially in highly polluted regions, while it is only exclusively sensitive to …

Addressing social inequities has been recognized as foundational to transforming food systems. Activists and scholars have critiqued food movements as lacking an orientation towards addressing issues of social justice. To address issues of inequity, sustainable food systems education (SFSE) programs will have to increase students’ equity-related capabilities. Our first objective in this paper is to determine the extent to which SFSE programs in the USA and Canada address equity. We identified 108 programs and reviewed their public facing documents for an explicit focus on equity. We found that roughly 80% of universities with SFSE programs do not provide evidence that …

New England Food Policy Council Survey Results, Cathryn A. Porter, Catherine M. Ashcraft
Natural Resources & the Environment
This document provides the results of a survey of 12 food policy councils (FPCs) in New England conducted during October – December 2017. The survey’s purpose is to understand New England FPCs’ policy priorities, identify recent policy and planning processes, and learn about how FPC’s incorporate public participation. This survey also incorporates results from another survey, the annual survey conducted by the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF), which surveys all FPCs in North America.

Women In Television And Film: How On-Screen Roles And Behind-The-Scenes Jobs Limit The Future Of Females In The Industry, Lauren Foster
M.S. in Leadership
Various factors contribute to the issue of gender imbalances in the television and film industry, including motherhood demands, networking barriers, and cultural practices. For this study, news media, television broadcasts, and film productions are all explored as each sub-industry shares many standard environmental features. The global history of women in television and film⎼⎼both on-screen and behind-the-scenes, statistics covering the presence of females in the industries, organizational structures, sexism and discrimination in entertainment workplaces, and the challenges facing women in film and television are all examined.

I’Ll Be Dammed! Public Preferences Regarding Dam Removal In New Hampshire (Pre-Print), Natallia Leuchanka Diessner, Catherine Ashcraft, Kevin H. Gardner, Lawrence C. Hamilton
New Hampshire EPSCoR
Decisions about dams, like other environmental conflicts, involve complex tradeoffs between different water uses with varying human and ecological impacts, have significant impacts on public resources and involve many stakeholders with diverse and often conflicting interests. Given the many upcoming dam decisions in New England and across the United States of America, an improved understanding of public preferences about dam decisions is needed to steward resources in the public interest. This research asks (1) What does the public want to see happen with dams?, and (2) Do demographic factors influence public preferences for dam decisions? This paper analyzes data from …

Exploring The Utility Of Small Unmanned Aerial System (Suas) Products In Remote Visual Stream Ecological Assessment, Alexandra D. Evans, Kevin H. Gardner, Scott Greenwood, Bruce Pruitt
New Hampshire EPSCoR
Many restoration projects’ success is not evaluated (Roni & Beechie 2013; Nilsson et al. 2016), despite available conventional ecological assessment methods. There is a need for more flexible, affordable, and efficient methods for evaluation, particularly those that take advantage of new remote sensing and geospatial technologies (Hubbart et al. 2017). This study explores the use of illustrative small unmanned aerial system (sUAS) products, made using a simple structure-from-motion photogrammetry workflow, coupled with a visual assessment protocol as a remote evaluation and ecological condition archive approach. Three streams were assessed in the field (“surface assessments”) using the Stream Visual Assessment Protocol …
U.S. Population Growth Slows, But Diversity Grows, Kenneth M. Johnson
U.S. Population Growth Slows, But Diversity Grows, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
In this brief, author Kenneth Johnson reports that in 2019 the U.S. population grew at the lowest rate in a century because there were fewer births, more deaths, and less immigration. Fertility rates diminished regardless of race or Hispanic origin and immigration declines were also widespread. As a result, the growth rate of both the minority and non-Hispanic White population diminished. Yet, the racial diversity of the population continued to grow, according to Census Bureau estimates released on June 25, 2020.
This increasing diversity reflects two important demographic trends. The minority population is growing, and the non-Hispanic White population is …
