Can Science-Informed, Consensus-Based Stakeholder Negotiations Achieve Optimal Dam Decision Outcomes?, Cuihong Song, Natallia Leuchanka Diessner, Catherine M. Ashcraft, Weiwei Mo
New Hampshire EPSCoR
Integrating science and decision-making in dam management is needed to address complex tradeoffs among environmental, economic, and social outcomes across varied geographic scales and diverse stakeholder interests. In this study, we introduce an approach that integrates system dynamics modeling (SDM) and role-play simulation (RPS) to facilitate use of the best available knowledge in dam decision-making. Using a hypothetical dam decision context in the New England region of the United States, this research investigates: (1) How do science-informed, negotiated outcomes compare to Pareto-optimal outcomes produced by a scientific model that balance selected system performance tradeoffs?; and (2) How do science-informed, negotiated …

Demystifying The Scholarly Publishing Landscape, Eleta Exline, Emily Poworoznek, Patricia Condon
University Library Scholarship
The scholarly publishing landscape has grown exponentially in size, scope and complexity within the last decade. Since the number and type of publishing outlets have exploded, researchers now need to consider practical and ethical issues such as predatory journals, open access, preprints, publishing data and sponsor obligations when making publication decisions. Further, these issues may be compounded by interdisciplinary research collaborations. Presenters will provide an overview of the contemporary scholarly publishing landscape and the different components. They will also help researchers identify key questions to ask during different stages of the research process, highlight differences that may bear on interdisciplinary …

Oral Exams In Shift To Remote Learning, Mihaela Sabin, Karen H. Jin, Adrienne Smith
Applied Engineering and Sciences Scholarship
In this experience report paper we present our experience with the development of oral assessments as final examinations in three introductory computing courses. The choice of this type of summative assessment was prompted by the emergency remote instruction instituted in the middle of the Spring 2020 semester, across colleges and universities in the U.S., due to the coronavirus pandemic. The principles that guided our oral assessment design were: to develop a more comprehensive measure of student competence and mitigate exam cheating; to facilitate communication and workplace skills through student-teacher interaction; and to alleviate negative emotions associated with traditional summative assessments. …

Estimating The Loss Reduction Effects Of Disaster Preparedness: An Empirical Study Of U.S. Coastal States, Qing Miao, Meri Davlasheridze
Coastal Response Research Center
This research is one of the first to estimate the loss-reduction benefit of government investments in community-level disaster preparedness. Based on empirical, observational data, our approach is different from most disaster-related benefit-cost analyses using probabilistic loss estimation models. Drawing upon disaster aid data, we are able to distinguish preparedness from mitigation projects, develop more precise estimates of the effect of preparedness spending, and also compare the cost-effectiveness of different types of disaster projects and programs (preparedness vs. mitigation). With a particular focus on coastal areas, this project sheds light on the benefits of preparedness for coastal hazards (e.g., floods, hurricanes, …

Change Of Administration Leads To Dramatic Decline In Consumer Confidence In Granite State 3/1/2021, Unh Survey Center
Change Of Administration Leads To Dramatic Decline In Consumer Confidence In Granite State 3/1/2021, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
Economic optimism in New Hampshire has dropped significantly following the election of Joe Biden. Optimism among Republicans has fallen precipitously while optimism among Democrats has increased only marginally. This has led to some measures of consumer confidence reaching or nearing all-time lows. However, many residents express ambivalence about the economy and foresee mixed or uncertain conditions in the future. Nearly half of state residents plan to spend a new stimulus check if they receive one while the other half plan to save the money.
Peer Conversation About Substance Use, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore
Peer Conversation About Substance Use, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore
Communication
What happens when a friend starts talking about her own substance use and misuse? This article provides the first investigation of how substance use is spontaneously topicalized in naturally occurring conversation. It presents a detailed analysis of a rare video-recorded interaction showing American English-speaking university students talking about their own substance (mis)use in a residential setting. During this conversation, several substance (mis)use informings are disclosed about one participant, and this study elucidates what occasions each disclosure, and how participants respond to each disclosure. This research shows how participants use casual conversation to offer important substance (mis)use information to their friends …

Many research and monitoring networks in recent decades have provided publicly available data documenting environmental and ecological change, but little is known about the status of efforts to synthesize this information across networks. We convened a working group to assess ongoing and potential cross-network synthesis research and outline opportunities and challenges for the future, focusing on the US-based research network (the US Long-Term Ecological Research network, LTER) and monitoring network (the National Ecological Observatory Network, NEON). LTER-NEON cross-network research synergies arise from the potentials for LTER measurements, experiments, models, and observational studies to provide context and mechanisms for interpreting NEON …
