The Quest To Completely Map The World’S Oceans In Support Of Understanding Marine Biodiversity And The Regulatory Barriers We Have Created, Larry A. Mayer, J. Ashley Roach Feb 2021

The Quest To Completely Map The World’S Oceans In Support Of Understanding Marine Biodiversity And The Regulatory Barriers We Have Created, Larry A. Mayer, J. Ashley Roach

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

This paper reviews the current poor state of our knowledge of the bathymetry of the seafloor (only approximately 15% has been mapped by modern bathymetric sonars) and discusses the efforts being made under the auspices of the Nippon Foundation gebco Seabed 2030 program to rectify this situation and to produce a publically available, complete map of the ocean basins that can be used to support UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 by 2030. It will be impossible to achieve the targeted level of sustainable development without a comprehensive map of the ocean floor, a fact recognized by the planners of the …

Granite Staters More Likely To Get Vaccinated For Covid-19, Confidence In Vaccine Increases 2/1/2021, Unh Survey Center Feb 2021

Granite Staters More Likely To Get Vaccinated For Covid-19, Confidence In Vaccine Increases 2/1/2021, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Three-quarters of New Hampshire residents say they will almost certainly or probably get a COVID-19 vaccine or say they have already been vaccinated. Granite Staters are increasingly confident about the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine. Republicans are nearly twice as likely as they were in December to say they will be vaccinated when able but they remain far less likely to say so than Democrats. People who remain unwilling to be vaccinated are set in their opposition, as most indicate that recommendations from public health experts, political figures, or their friends and family will not change their mind.

This Letter proposes a frequency scaling for processing, storing, and sharing high-bandwidth, passive acoustic spectral data that optimizes data volume while maintaining reasonable data resolution. The format is a hybrid that uses 1 Hz resolution up to 455 Hz and millidecade frequency bands above 455 Hz. This hybrid is appropriate for many types of soundscape analysis, including detecting different types of soundscapes and regulatory applications like computing weighted sound exposure levels. Hybrid millidecade files are compressed compared to the 1 Hz equivalent such that one research center could feasibly store data from hundreds of projects for sharing among researchers globally.

Effects Of A Large-Scale, Natural Sediment Deposition Event On Plant Cover In A Massachusetts Salt Marsh, Gregg E. Moore, David M. Burdick, Mike R. Routhier, A. B. Novak, Andrew R. Payne Jan 2021

Effects Of A Large-Scale, Natural Sediment Deposition Event On Plant Cover In A Massachusetts Salt Marsh, Gregg E. Moore, David M. Burdick, Mike R. Routhier, A. B. Novak, Andrew R. Payne

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

In mid-winter 2018, an unprecedented sediment deposition event occurred throughout portions of the Great Marsh in Massachusetts. Evaluation of this event in distinct marsh areas spanning three towns (Essex, Ipswich, and Newbury) revealed deposition covering 29.2 hectares with an average thickness of 30.1±2.1 mm measured shortly after deposition. While sediment deposition helps marshes survive sea level rise by building elevation, effects of such a large-scale deposition on New England marshes are unknown. This natural event provided an opportunity to study effects of large-scale sediment addition on plant cover and soil chemistry, with implications for marsh resilience. Sediment thickness did not …

Improving Staff Communication For Small Non-Profits: Girls' Empowerment Program Case Study, Elizabeth Schwaner Jan 2021

Improving Staff Communication For Small Non-Profits: Girls' Empowerment Program Case Study, Elizabeth Schwaner

Carsey Publications

In this white paper, author Elizabeth Schwaner discusses challenges faced by Girls' Empowerment Program, a non-profit organization based in the northeast U.S. that serves at-risk girls in its community through a year-round mentoring program paired with a residential social summer camp. Despite its undeniable strengths, issues with communication are a persistent challenge. Like many small organizations staffed by a few paid employees and many volunteers, identifying specific practices that lead to miscommunication or helpful informational pathways can be a challenge. This case study elucidates some of those challenges and opportunities for Girls' Empowerment, but with the expectation that other small, …
