The Arctic faces multiple pressures including climate change, shifting demographics, human health risks, social justice imbalances, governance issues, and expanding resource extraction. A convergence of academic disciplines—such as natural and social sciences, engineering and technology, health and medicine—and international perspectives is required to meaningfully contribute to solving the challenges of Arctic peoples and ecosystems. However, successfully carrying out convergent, international research and education remains a challenge. Here, lessons from the planning phase of a convergence research project concerned with the health of Arctic waters developed by the Arctic Science IntegrAtion Quest (ASIAQ) are discussed. Share Of Childless Adults Eligible For Eitc Triples Under American Rescue Plan, Jess Carson Apr 2021

Share Of Childless Adults Eligible For Eitc Triples Under American Rescue Plan, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In this fact sheet, author Jess Carson explores how changes to the Earned Income Tax Credit in 2021 affect childless tax filers.

Findings show that the share of childless adults who can claim a credit has tripled under the new provisions, and that the biggest driver of widened access is lowering the minimum age for eligibility. Childless filers in different areas of the country and of different racial-ethnic groups all have wider access, but gains are larger in some groups than others.

Policymakers considering whether to retain all or part of the EITC expansions in future years should consider how …

The goal is to help develop healthier habits by increasing physical activity, providing guidance for better nutrition, and decrease BMI. Parents will be supported and provided tools for the ability to sustain this in the home. After completion …

The Development Of A Pilot Program For A Standardized New Graduate Nurse Orientation Process To Support The Transition To Practice During Covid-19, Jennifer Low

M. S. in Nursing Health Care Leadership

New graduate nurses represent ten percent of the current nursing workforce and with the nursing shortage, retention of these nurses is key for sustaining and growing the labor pool. Furthermore, with almost twenty-five percent of new nurses leaving their positions within two years of starting, we must address the successful transition to practice. The move from student to graduate nurse can be stressful and difficult, but when combined with pandemic with reduced or no hands-on clinical experiences during their last year of school, there is greater pressure for organizations to provide orientation that addresses the specific needs of these new …

Subjective Communication: A New Training Method, William Plaisted Apr 2021

Subjective Communication: A New Training Method, William Plaisted

M.S. in Health Care Management

This project centralizes around the stigma of communicating in the healthcare system, and using policies and procedures as the foundation, when it should be the employees who hold them up. Having worked in healthcare for nearly twelve years, an issue I have always wanted to address is the way we communicate to staff. This translates into training them in a new way as well. While it is important to have rules and protocols are clear as possible, we as leaders must understand that people come from different culture, backgrounds, experiences, generations, etc. So, we need to keep that in mind …

Student leadership development is essential in ensuring that society be left in the hands of leaders who are confident in their abilities. Key concepts related to this study include student leadership development pre- and during the pandemic; how those …

Remote Work: Building A Framework For Success, Charmane Sablock Apr 2021

Remote Work: Building A Framework For Success, Charmane Sablock

M.S. in Leadership

The recent COVID19 pandemic has turned the word remote work into a business buzz phrase. While some businesses embraced remote work before the pandemic, many organizations needed to make quick decisions implementing a remote workforce as the pandemic unfolded and required them to send employees home to work during Stay at Home orders to insure employee safety through social distancing. This research is focused on both the advantages and disadvantages of implementing a remote work model within an organization. While there are studies reporting aspects of employee performance that improved, there were also challenges noted with performance of individuals and …

Understanding Interpersonal Trust And Task-Unrelated Thought Through Computer-Mediated Health Conversations, Tyler Stetson Apr 2021

Understanding Interpersonal Trust And Task-Unrelated Thought Through Computer-Mediated Health Conversations, Tyler Stetson

Inquiry Journal Spring 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic caused many healthcare professionals to transition to digital telehealth platforms for patient visits, making interpersonal trust more difficult to achieve. My study examined the relationship between task-unrelated thought (TUT), likability, and interpersonal trust in medically related conversations. Two questions were asked for this study: (1) Is the level of trust and likability between two chat participants related to the frequency of TUT during computer mediated conversation? and (2) What features of language are associated with TUT, trust, and likability in a computer-mediated telehealth environment? Participants chatted online via an instant message platform about personal remedies for the …

Occupational Therapy Via Telehealth For Families Raising Children With Autism, Carli Rita

Inquiry Journal Spring 2021

Family health is an emerging practice area in occupational therapy that has potential to improve overall family health and participation in daily activities. This study seeks to determine the preliminary effectiveness of the Healthy Families Flourish Program, a ten-session occupational therapy intervention program delivered via telehealth to support families raising school-aged children with autism. Four New Hampshire families were recruited for participation in this study. Weekly sessions took place and …

Learning To Code Human Behavior, Jennika Mannesto

Inquiry Journal Spring 2021

By participating in two research projects in the field of human development and family studies at the University of New Hampshire, I have gained lifelong observational skills that will be valuable in my future teaching career. Through the Mommy and Me project I have become proficient in using the Q-sort method to code observable behavior. Through Project Advancing Children’s Museum Engagement (Project ACME) I used videotaped interactions of families in a children’s museum to learn about the types of play children engaged in and how that related to gender. I created my own coding scheme for this project to code …

The Effects Of Instagram’S Fitspiration On The Health And Well-Being Of Women, Ciara Devereaux, Grace Mcgrew Apr 2021

The Effects Of Instagram’S Fitspiration On The Health And Well-Being Of Women, Ciara Devereaux, Grace Mcgrew

Inquiry Journal Spring 2021

Despite social media’s benefits, such as connecting millions of users all over the world, apps like Instagram have been linked to detrimental consequences for the mental health and self-esteem of their users. Ironically, even content designed to promote positivity and well-being on the platform, such as “fitspiration,” may be associated with undesirable consequences for users. Our goal was to gain a greater understanding of how users perceive different types of fitspiration posts and how exposure to these different types of fitspiration content are associated with changes in users’ mental health and well-being. Fifty-one females were surveyed each day over the …

Refugee Composers Of The Twentieth Century: The Impact Of Displacement On Musical Identity During World War Ii, Kylie Smith

Inquiry Journal Spring 2021

Kurt Weill, Bela Bartok, and Arnold Schoenberg are all influential composers of the twentieth century who immigrated to the United States to escape persecution during World War II. Their refugee experience, however, is not often taken into account when studying their musical works. This project examines how their immigration affected their compositional output, and how the pressures of the time shaped them as composers. This project aims to bring light to an underappreciated factor of these composers' lives and inform the way we support refugee musicians in the future.
