Quantitative Soundscape Analysis To Understand Multidimensional Features, Dylan Charles Wilford, Jennifer L. Miksis-Olds, S. Bruce Martin, Daniel R. Howard, Kim Lowell, Anthony P. Lyons, Michael James Smith
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
A methodology for the analysis of soundscapes was developed in an attempt to facilitate efficient and accurate soundscape comparisons across time and space. The methodology consists of a collection of traditional soundscape metrics, statistical measures, and acoustic indices that were selected to quantify several salient properties of marine soundscapes: amplitude, impulsiveness, periodicity, and uniformity. The metrics were calculated over approximately 30 h of semi-continuous passive acoustic data gathered in seven unique acoustic environments. The resultant metric values were compared to a priori descriptions and cross-examined statistically to determine which combination most effectively captured the characteristics of the representative soundscapes. The …

Proceedings Of The Harmful Algal Bloom (Hab) Preparedness & Response Virtual Workshop And Tabletop Exercise, Coastal Response Research Center
Coastal Response Research Center
On April 27 - 28, 2021, CRRC and DPP co-sponsored a virtual workshop entitled “Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Preparedness & Response.” The workshop focused on HAB preparedness and response capabilities and responsibilities across the Federal Interagency Working Group on Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Act (IWG – HABHRCA) members and select state agencies. Workshop participants represented academia, Federal, state, and local agencies. The two-day workshop included plenary presentations from Federal, state, and non-government agency representatives outlining: their roles and responsibilities; risk and crisis communication strategies; tools for early detection, measurement quantification, and mitigation; and public health and …

Quality Of Life High In Granite State But More Than Half Of Young People Considering Leaving 7/28/2021, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
Nine in ten describe New Hampshire as an excellent or good place to live overall and nearly all New Hampshire residents feel safe in their neighborhood. Most highly rate their local environment, recreational opportunities, and health care facilities. However, nearly half of Granite Staters and an even greater number of young people say there are few local affordable housing options and say the state is not affordable overall. A quarter of state residents say they are likely to leave New Hampshire in the next five years, including more than half under the age of thirty-five, with many citing a different …

Sununu Approval Slips, Covid Drops As Most Important Problem In Nh 7/26/2021, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
Approval of Governor Chris Sununu's job performance in New Hampshire remains high but has slipped in recent months. Three-quarters approve of Sununu's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, but only one in ten believe it is the most important problem facing the state, far lower than earlier in the year. Granite Staters oppose abortion-related policies in the recently passed budget bill.

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Passive acoustic data collection has grown exponentially over the past decade resulting in petabytes of data that document our ocean soundscapes. This effort has resulted in two big data challenges: (1) the curation, management, and global dissemination of passive acoustic datasets and (2) efficiently extracting critical information and comparing it to other datasets in the context of ecosystem-based research and management. To address the former, the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information recently established an archive for passive acoustic data. This fast-growing archive currently contains over 100 TB of passive acoustic audio files mainly collected from stationary recorders throughout waters …

Eating Competence And Dietary Intake Of Sexual And Gender Minority College Students, Sara Murphy, Jesse Stabile Morrell
Eating Competence And Dietary Intake Of Sexual And Gender Minority College Students, Sara Murphy, Jesse Stabile Morrell
Faculty Publications
Sexual and gender minority college students are underrepresented in nutrition research and may face unique challenges related to eating which impact their overall diet quality. We assessed the differences in eating competence and dietary intake between sexual and gender minority (SGM) and cisgender heterosexual (CH) college students. Participants (n = 2645) reported sexual orientation, gender identity and completed the Eating Competence Satter Inventory (ecSI 2.0™ through an online questionnaire. Three-day food records examined dietary intake. Intake was compared to recommendations for nutrients of public health concern. Chi-square and ANCOVA examined differences between eating competence and dietary intake. There were no …

Health Care Claims And Mental Health Emergency Department Utilization, Lucy C. Hodder
All Materials
In partnership with NH DHHS, the IHPP Center for Health Analytics analyzed commercial and NH Medicaid administrative claims data in an effort to better understand visits to emergency departments for mental health conditions from April 2019 to March 2020. Lucy Hodder presentation to the Governor’s Task Force on ED Boarding included rates of ED visits for all mental health conditions, select conditions such as Major Depression and Schizophrenia, secondary diagnoses such as Suicidal Ideation and Substance Use Disorder, as well as stratified rates by age categories. The analysis also included linking NH Medicaid claims to ED boarding/waitlists to determine how …

Leveraging Natural Resources Toward Resilience: Outreach, Restoration, And Monitoring For A Resilient Nh Coast, Alyson Eberhardt, David M. Burdick, Gregg E. Moore
Faculty Publications
Both sound science and meaningful community engagement are critical to creating resilient coastlines given that important natural resources and high population densities coexist in these areas. Salt marshes and sand dunes provide important benefits to the people who live near them, such as mitigating flood impacts, when the condition of the ecosystem is robust enough to support such functions. To enhance the ability of these systems to perform ecosystem services, the goals of this project were to 1. Empower landowners to sustainably manage their own property to support coastal ecosystems and the benefits they provide, 2. Restore eroded sand dunes …

Resiliency Of Healthcare Workers During The Sars-Cov-2 Pandemic, Robert Fishwick
Resiliency Of Healthcare Workers During The Sars-Cov-2 Pandemic, Robert Fishwick
M.S. in Health Care Management
The novel Coronavirus-2019 created a world-wide health care crisis generating an overwhelming burden of illness and mortality resulting in physical and emotional distress of health care workers. Frontline healthcare workers remain fearful of infection, death, and the risk of COVID-19 transmission not only to themselves, but to their families. In many cases, these individuals developed post-traumatic stress and other mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual concerns, resulting in a decline of resilience and burn out. The aim of this project is to identify issues linking emotional stress, anxiety, and depression secondary to the COVID-19 pandemic in frontline respiratory therapists working in …
