The Troubled Teen Industry And Its Effects: An Oral History, C. Jamie Mater
The Troubled Teen Industry And Its Effects: An Oral History, C. Jamie Mater
Inquiry Journal Spring 2022
In 2021, I received a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) to study the effects of the system I lived in from ages 13 to 16: the troubled teen industry. The troubled teen industry (TTI) consists of thousands of underregulated residential youth treatment facilities. These treatment facilities operate on a for-profit basis and trace their origins back to the 1958 cult Synanon. Many cases of abuse have been reported about these facilities, including deaths. Adolescents are sent into the TTI for anything from truancy to depression to drug addiction. My research focused on gaining first-hand insight into people’s experiences surrounding one …

The Presence Of 17-Beta Estradiol, 17-Alpha Ethinyl Estradiol, And Estrone In Wastewater Treatment: Navigating Unanticipated Results, Alexis Eaton
Inquiry Journal Spring 2022
In 2021, I participated in the Research Experience and Apprenticeship Program (REAP) under the guidance of Dr. Paula Mouser of UNH’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. I researched the fate and transport of several estrogenic compounds in a Connecticut wastewater treatment facility. The popularity of oral contraceptives has led to an increase in hormonal contaminants in surface water bodies. Estradiols and ethinyl estradiols, the two estrogenic compounds that I intended to study, can negatively impact the development of reproductive organs in male fish, such as reducing testes size as well as lowering sperm count. Municipal wastewater treatment plant discharge …

Examining Potential For Improvements In Composting And Waste Reduction In The Greater Durham, Nh, Region, Chloe Gross
Examining Potential For Improvements In Composting And Waste Reduction In The Greater Durham, Nh, Region, Chloe Gross
Inquiry Journal Spring 2022
You often see compost bins outside local restaurants, behind the scenes in dining halls, and in the backyards of homeowners, but have you ever thought about how they get there? What planning goes into implementing a composting program and how an organization decides what kind of composting system to use? I can tell you that it takes a bit more than just putting a green bin out near the trash can. Through the freshman Research Experience and Apprenticeship Program (REAP), I spent the summer of 2021 with the Regional Compost Working Group investigating community composting in the University of New …
Behind The Scenes: Turtle Trapping And Connectivity Mapping For Endangered Blanding’S Turtle Conservation In Southern New Hampshire, Maeve Kelley
Inquiry Journal Spring 2022
Freshwater turtles are experiencing dramatic population declines due to human-caused stressors. Roads, in particular, have significantly increased turtle mortality rates through vehicle collisions. The Blanding’s turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) is state endangered in New Hampshire and is listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Blanding’s turtles are especially vulnerable to population declines because they reproduce late in life and their young have low survival rates. Adult Blanding’s turtles migrate from ponds to upland habitats to nest and hatchlings must later travel across the landscape to reach ponds. These overland movements increase the risk of …

Noaa Hurricane Preparedness Summit 2022, Crrc
Coastal Response Research Center
On April 20-21, 2022, NOAA’s Disaster Preparedness Program partnered with Coastal Response Research Center (CRRC) to facilitate three webinars focusing on NOAA’s hurricane preparedness and readiness for personnel (people), mission, and infrastructure (PMI). The virtual event entitled “NOAA Hurricane Preparedness Summit 2022,” helped put NOAA in a better posture for the 2022 hurricane season by identifying best practices and lessons learned from the 2021 season, recognizing challenges specific to the Pacific Islands, and socializing tools and resources available to support different stages of storm landfall.
Specific objectives for this year’s Summit were to:
1. Understand best practices and lessons learned …

Feature Article: Celebrating Thirty-Five Years Of Undergraduate Research, Savannah Salvage, Paige Fanneron, Anna Scheifele
Inquiry Journal Spring 2022
For thirty-five years, the Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research has promoted and supported substantial research endeavors by over 3,000 undergraduates at the University of New Hampshire. Through its programs UNH undergraduates serve as apprentice researchers alongside faculty mentors, earn credit for research work during the academic year, conduct independent projects over the summer that often extend into senior theses and capstones, travel across the globe to conduct research, and learn to polish their writing about research and share it with a wide audience. Students also receive funding to present their research at professional conferences across the country, and here at …

Commentary: The Workplace Vaccine Decision And Its Implications For Federal Regulatory Power, John M. Greabe
Commentary: The Workplace Vaccine Decision And Its Implications For Federal Regulatory Power, John M. Greabe
Law Faculty Scholarship
[Excerpt] "In a recent commentary, I contrasted the pragmatic consequentialism of retiring Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer – and, more generally, the other two members of the court’s liberal bloc (Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan) – with the structural formalism of the court’s six-justice conservative supermajority. I also suggested that this framework may provide a more useful way to understand many of the court’s recent and upcoming blockbuster decisions than the partisan angle that court watchers so frequently use."

More Coffins Than Cradles In 2,300 U.S. Counties: Covid's Grim Impact, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
In this brief, Carsey Senior Demographer Kenneth Johnson reports that COVID’s impact is reflected in the sharp rise in U.S. deaths, reaching 3,434,000 between July 2020 and July 2021. This is a record high and 20 percent more than two years ago before the COVID pandemic. Births diminished to just 3,582,000, the fewest since 1979. The primary driver of U.S. population growth has long been the substantial surplus of births over deaths. This surplus has now dwindled to just 148,000, compared to 923,000 two years ago—an 84 percent decline. With immigration also at a low ebb, the population grew by …
