Gay Male Speech And Dialects In Motion: Constructing Linguistic Identity In Southern New Hampshire, Hayden P. Stinson
Gay Male Speech And Dialects In Motion: Constructing Linguistic Identity In Southern New Hampshire, Hayden P. Stinson
Honors Theses and Capstones
The study of gay male speech has largely focused on fundamental frequency and various quantifiable aspects of /s/ (Campbell-Kibler 2012, Mack and Munson 2012, Munson 2007, Zimman 2013). In a study of the speech of three gay men from California, however, Podesva (2011) concludes that gay men may utilize salient aspects of regional dialects to express their gayness. The stylistic correlation between gayness and certain regional dialects supports Eckert’s (2008) argument that linguistic styles are centered around ideologies, rather than rigid categorical identities and Podesva (2011) urges that this phenomenon be studied further. Southern New Hampshire provides an ideal landscape …
Automating The Boring Stuff: A Deep Learning And Computer Vision Workflow For Coral Reef Habitat Mapping, Jordan Patrick Pierce
Automating The Boring Stuff: A Deep Learning And Computer Vision Workflow For Coral Reef Habitat Mapping, Jordan Patrick Pierce
Master's Theses and Capstones
High-resolution underwater imagery provides a detailed view of coral reefs and facilitates insight into important ecological metrics concerning their health. In recent years, anthropogenic stressors, including those related to climate change, have altered the community composition of coral reef habitats around the world. Currently the most common method of quantifying the composition of these communities is through benthic quadrat surveys and image analysis. This requires manual annotation of images that is a time-consuming task that does not scale well for large studies. Patch-based image classification using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) can automate this task and provide sparse labels, but they …

First In The Nation: New Hampshire’S Changing Electorate In Changing Times, Kenneth M. Johnson, Dante Scala, Andrew Smith
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Kenneth Johnson, Dante Scala, and Andrew Smith discuss demographic forces that are reshaping the New Hampshire landscape. They report that more than 20 percent of potential voters in the 2020 New Hampshire primary were either not old enough to vote in 2016 or resided somewhere other than New Hampshire. New Hampshire has one of the most mobile populations in the nation. Only one-third of New Hampshire residents age 25 and older were born in the state. Democratic presidential primary turnout in New Hampshire may hit record highs in 2020. Republican turnout, in contrast, is likely to …

Rivers (on land) and turbidity currents (in the ocean) are the most important sediment transport processes on Earth. Yet how rivers generate turbidity currents as they enter the coastal ocean remains poorly understood. The current paradigm, based on laboratory experiments, is that turbidity currents are triggered when river plumes exceed a threshold sediment concentration of ~1 kg/m3. Here we present direct observations of an exceptionally dilute river plume, with sediment concentrations 1 order of magnitude below this threshold (0.07 kg/m3), which generated a fast (1.5 m/s), erosive, short-lived (6 min) turbidity current. However, no turbidity current occurred during subsequent river …

Datacenter Alternate Site Selection: Requirements, Criteria, And Application, Craig Stansfield
M. S. in Management
The purpose of this research project is to develop a deeper understanding into the criteria that is used to select an alternate location as a fail-over site for information technology infrastructure. This alternate site would be activated after loss of equipment or facilities at the primary location due to manmade disruption or natural disaster. The research conducted intends to develop the distance and geography requirements needed to provide a secure location to restore critical functions and provide continuity of operations for the New Hampshire Army National Guard Datacenter. This project will explore ideal and best case scenarios for alternate site …

Mapping The Food Landscape In New Hampshire, Jess Carson
Mapping The Food Landscape In New Hampshire, Jess Carson
Carsey Publications
In this brief, Jess Carson explores the food landscape of New Hampshire, documenting where lower incomes and low population density might lead to food insecurity, and mapping the locations of various food sources. Much of the northern and western parts of the state have high proportions of low-income residents and low population density, compared with more southern parts of the state. In terms of food sources, retail locations roughly mirror the state’s population distribution, with many options throughout the southern tier of the state and concentration around the Interstate 93 corridor into Northern New Hampshire. While many food support sites, …

Towards Automated Validation Of Charted Soundings: Existing Tests And Limitations, Christos Kastrisios, Brian R. Calder, Giuseppe Masetti, Pete Holmberg
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The nautical chart is one of the fundamental tools in navigation used by mariners to plan and safely execute voyages. Its compilation follows strict cartographic constraints with the most prominent being that of the safety. Thereby, the cartographer is called to make the selection of the bathymetric information for portrayal on charts in a way that, at any location, the expected water depth is not deeper than the source information. To validate the shoal-biased pattern of selection two standard tests are used, i.e. the triangle and edge tests. To date, some efforts have been made towards the automation of the …
Monitoring Multidimensional Poverty In The U.S., Sophie Mitra, Debra L. Brucker
Monitoring Multidimensional Poverty In The U.S., Sophie Mitra, Debra L. Brucker
Institute on Disability
On the international stage, poverty is increasingly understood multi-dimensionally as a deprivation of wellbeing in several dimensions rather than solely as a lack of income or low consumption. In the U.S., recent research shows that many people who are not counted as poor under the official or supplemental measures of income poverty experience multidimensional poverty. Yet there is no monitoring of multidimensional poverty. This paper examines trends in multidimensional poverty in the U.S. since 2013 using a measure that includes deprivations in family income, selfreported health status, educational attainment, employment status, and health insurance coverage. Using Current Population Survey data …

REBEL REBELS: RACE, RESISTANCE, AND REMEMBRANCE IN
“THE FREE STATE OF WINSTON”
by
Susan Neelly Deily-Swearingen
University of New Hampshire
Murderous division was the defining characteristic of Winston County, Alabama during the turbulent Civil War era. To this day the county, located in the foothills of the Appalachians, retains its eponymous title “The Free State of Winston”- a reference to the county’s attempt to remain neutral during the war. It was not a universally welcomed position either within Winston County or in the somewhat sympathetic neighboring counties. A once tightly knit county of mostly non-slaveholding, subsistence farmers became homicidal, …

Mules, Fuels, And Fusion: Energy, Entropy, And The Crossing Of The Panamanian Transit Zone, 1848-1990, Jordan T. Coulombe
Doctoral Dissertations
Between 1848 and 1990 Americans attempted to construct numerous infrastructural projects in Panama in hopes of bridging the Isthmus and connecting the seas. These schemes ran the gamut from the creation of the Panama railroad in the early 1850s through attempts to detonate nuclear explosives to create a sea-level canal in the 1960s. While these projects seem quite alien to one another, these two plans, and other attempts to cross the Isthmus, were unified by their shared reliance on energy’s capacity to overcome the entropy of the Panamanian environment. In order to reshape Isthmian landscapes, American engineers, scientists, and policymakers …
Climate Adaptation For Coastal Road Infrastructure In The Northeast, Jayne Fifield Knott
Climate Adaptation For Coastal Road Infrastructure In The Northeast, Jayne Fifield Knott
Doctoral Dissertations
The climate is changing, and these changes are expected to accelerate. In the northeast region of the United States, temperatures and sea levels are projected to rise with climate change. These changes have the potential to impact coastal communities in many ways, but this dissertation focuses on climate-change impacts to pavement life. A well-maintained and fully functional roadway system is essential to maintaining a high quality of life and economic vitality in a region. When pavements fail prematurely, the agency and user costs of full-pavement rehabilitation or reconstruction are much higher than the costs of routine maintenance and pavement over-lays. …
Science Diplomacy In The Atlantic Arctic: Assessing Potential Expansion Of The Distributed Biological Observatory (Dbo) To The Baffin Bay-Davis Strait Area, Claire Eaton
Master's Theses and Capstones
The scale and rate of climate change in the Arctic has increased the sense of urgency surrounding development of systems-level observing programs that aim to capture and analyze time series data related to environmental change. While the international scientific community has made great strides in program design and technological innovation, gaps in coverage remain between observing systems, presenting a complex interdisciplinary problem, or “grand challenge.” Research that aims to address global scale challenges, such as those faced in a rapidly changing Arctic, are often associated with extremely high operational costs and typically extend beyond the scope and capabilities of any …
Measuring, Modeling, And Evaluating The Spatial Properties Of Northeast Oregon Forests Using Unmanned Aerial Systems, James Perkins
Measuring, Modeling, And Evaluating The Spatial Properties Of Northeast Oregon Forests Using Unmanned Aerial Systems, James Perkins
Master's Theses and Capstones
There is an ever expanding range of applications for the aerial images that unmanned aerial systems can uniquely provide. One such application is the use of high-resolution imagery for stand-level forest inventory. Inventory techniques utilizing unmanned aerial systems could be attractive where conditions demand high-resolution data, or where other aerial imagery sources are cost prohibitive. Here the effectiveness of unmanned aerial systems in this application was tested. Over the summer of 2015, a remote-controlled hexacopter equipped with a micro four thirds camera was flown over multiple 1600 meter-squared forested plots in Eastern Oregon. Additional ground-level validation measurements were collected including …

Physical-World Knowledge And Public Views On Climate Change, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Linda M. Fogg
Faculty Publications
Climate change is a formidable topic, challenging the research efforts of countless scientists across many different fields. Surveys find surprisingly high levels of confidence among nonscientists, however, regarding their own understanding of climate change. More than threefourths of the respondents on recent U.S. surveys claimed to understand either a moderate amount or a great deal about climate change. Follow-up questions testing actual knowledge suggest that self-assessments are high relative to physical-world knowledge. For some people, self-assessments reflect confidence in their political views rather than geographical or science knowledge. This paper replicates and extends previous research using new data: an October …
Hydrographic Survey Validation And Chart Adequacy Assessment Using Automated Solutions, Giuseppe Masetti, Tyanne Faulkes, Christos Kastrisios
Hydrographic Survey Validation And Chart Adequacy Assessment Using Automated Solutions, Giuseppe Masetti, Tyanne Faulkes, Christos Kastrisios
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The rising trend in automation is constantly pushing the hydrographic field toward the exploration and the adoption of more effective approaches for each step of the ping-to-public workflow. However, the large amount of data collected by modern acquisition systems - especially when paired with the force multiplier factor provided by autonomous vessels - conflict with the increasing timeliness expected by today’s final users. Such a situation represents a processing challenge for the largely human-centered solutions that are currently available, and the adoption of automated and semi-automated data quality procedures seems the only scalable and long-term solution to the problem. At …
