War Crimes Of The 90s: Rape As A Strategy, Mary Guinan Mar 1993

War Crimes Of The 90s: Rape As A Strategy, Mary Guinan

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Historically, only men went to war. The winners took the losers' women and could rape, enslave, or kill them. As we moved into a more modern civilization, the rights of the winner over the women of the loser became less clear and were only vaguely documented. Even for modern war historians, what happens to the men on and off the battlefield is the main preoccupation. After all, women do not face combat and what happens to them seems unimportant. The rape of women by conquering armies has continued through all wars, but has rarely been considered a war crime, especially …

The Editor’S Role In Preventing Gender Bias In Scientific Journals: A Challenge, Mary Guinan Jan 1993

The Editor’S Role In Preventing Gender Bias In Scientific Journals: A Challenge, Mary Guinan

School of Public Health Faculty Research

One way to explore whether gender bias exists in the process of scientific publishing is to examine the end product, ie, the published works, using previously validated criteria. Williams and Borins used this method and found significant gender bias in the studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine. This study will be challenged on the basis of the criteria used to detect bias. Are they valid'' Who is to decide" No generally agreed upon criteria exist to examine gender bias. Indeed, scientific journals have not indicated that they see a need for such examination. But even this method …

Social Support And The Woman With Breast Cancer: Issues Of Measurement, Bonnie Margaret Ivey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The ability of the nurse to accurately and consistently measure the social support variable is invaluable to assessing the client's well being. This methodological study, based on Neuman's holistic view of the client, proposed to substantiate the reliability and validity of the PRQ85 as a measure of perceived social support with women experiencing breast cancer; A sample of 82 women with breast cancer responded to a composite questionnaire consisting of two social support measures (Personal Resource Questionnaire (PRQ85)), Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire (NSSQ)), two instruments to measure the mental health constructs depression (Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)) and anxiety (Spielberger Trait …

The Relationship Between Future Time Perspective And Breast Self-Examination In Young Adult Women, Nancy Marie Ronan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between future time perspective (FTP) and frequency and quality of BSE performance. FTP relates to the way an individual views her own personal future, which may influence many aspects of her life, including behavior. Recent studies show FTP to positively relate to other health behaviors; The sample consisted of 153 young adult women from the Student Health Center of a large University who took an informational health class which included BSE instruction. A demographic questionnaire, Champion's Quality of BSE survey, and Heimberg's FTP Inventory were used to obtain data. A …

Probing Corruption: Elite Perceptions Of Sting Operations, John L Chaddic Jan 1993

Probing Corruption: Elite Perceptions Of Sting Operations, John L Chaddic

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines whether a governmental elite consensus exists that the nature of public corruption in the Las Vegas Valley justifies the use of federal law enforcement undercover operations. Using the elite interviewing method, the writer obtained the perceptions of twenty-four sworn public officials from the cities of Henderson, Las Vegas and North Las Vegas regarding their views of public corruption and undercover operations. The writer contends that in accordance with social contract theoretical principles, federal undercover operations are justified if a consensus of seventy-five percent of the respondents agree to their use. The research demonstrated that ninety-six percent of …

Sexuality Research: Untested Gender Assumptions Amid Paradigm Shifts, Donna J Walker Jan 1993

Sexuality Research: Untested Gender Assumptions Amid Paradigm Shifts, Donna J Walker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Content analysis of 803 sexuality research abstracts selected from Sociological Abstracts published from January 1974 to August 1992 answers three questions: (1) Are there trends in sexuality research? (2) Is there a paradigm shift? and (3) Is gender differentiation present? Research between 1973 and 1991 displayed a consistent division between the positivist "nature" paradigm and the interactionist "nurture" paradigm. The proportion of studies which attempt to be non-gender specific has declined annually while researchers have consistently neglected to study male sexuality. Although there has been little change in basic principles, there have been trends in interpretations of research data. Conclusions …

History, Organization And Belief Among Cuban "Plantado" Political Prisoners, 1959-1993, William Raymond Yaworsky Jan 1993

History, Organization And Belief Among Cuban "Plantado" Political Prisoners, 1959-1993, William Raymond Yaworsky

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Anti-Castro activists began organizing guerrilla groups in the early 1960's to oppose the revolutionary government of Cuba. The perception that the new regime posed a threat to religion and pre-existing cultural values were among the motives for this activity. This thesis presents three case studies of individuals who due to their beliefs, became guerrillas, were imprisoned for that activity, and who subsequently refused to participate in the prison reeducation program. The findings of this study indicate that ideology and beliefs function to provide meaningful explanations to social life, and are not necessarily thin veils for self interest masquerading as principle. …

Nixon And Carter: A Comparative Analysis Of American Foreign Policy Toward The Middle East, Kristen Josie Dolan Jan 1993

Nixon And Carter: A Comparative Analysis Of American Foreign Policy Toward The Middle East, Kristen Josie Dolan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Nixon and Carter: A Comparative Analysis of American Foreign Policy Toward the Middle East examines the Nixon Administration's policies and objectives toward the Middle East, particularly its handling of the October 1973 Arab-Israeli war, and contrasts them with the Carter Administration's policies, which culminated in the peace talks at Camp David. This examination focuses on how these two very different presidents approached a dilemma which has been central to American Middle Eastern policy since the creation of Israel; how can the United States achieve a balance between the competing interests of protecting Israel and maintaining access to Middle East oil?

The Effect Of Participation In A Sport And Recreation Program On Job And Community Satisfaction, Stacey Marie Gorney Jan 1993

The Effect Of Participation In A Sport And Recreation Program On Job And Community Satisfaction, Stacey Marie Gorney

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The implementation of employee recreation programs has declined, giving away to programs which put more emphasis on health and fitness. Shinew & Crossley (1989) suggested that employee recreation programs may contain benefits comparable to those of employee health promotion programs. Research that has examined employee recreation programs and their benefits have been limited. The present study investigated employee participation (N = 122) in a community-sponsored employee recreation program named the Corporate Challenge. This study examined the effects of employee participation in the Corporate Challenge on employee job satisfaction, overall community satisfaction, and an employee's overall feelings of community life importance. …

Critical Theory And The Pragmatist Challenge, Dmitri N. Shalin Sep 1992

Critical Theory And The Pragmatist Challenge, Dmitri N. Shalin

Sociology Faculty Research

Habermas's theory breaks with the Continental tradition that has denigrated pragmatism as an Anglo-Saxon philosophy subservient to technocratic capitalism. While Habermas deftly uses pragmatist insights into communicative rationality and democratic ethos, he shows little sensitivity to other facets of pragmatism. This article argues that incorporating the pragmatist perspective on experience and indeterminacy brings a corrective to the emancipatory agenda championed by critical theorists. The pragmatist alternative to the theory of communicative action is presented, with the discussion centering around the following themes: disembodied reason versus embodied reasonableness, determinate being versus indeterminate reality, discursive truth versus pragmatic certainty, rational consensus versus …

Incestuous Wharton: A Consideration Of The Theme, Laura Kathleen Mcbride Jan 1992

Incestuous Wharton: A Consideration Of The Theme, Laura Kathleen Mcbride

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Nineteenth century anthropologists had identified the development of incest taboos as the dividing line between savage and civilized human beings. Sigmund Freud expanded on these early anthropological notions of incest in identifying incestuous desire at the heart of human sexuality; In The Reef and Summer, Wharton toys with these scientific ideas about incest; the radically different way that Summer incorporates incestuous tension echoes Freud's more complex assumptions. In The Reef, Anna Leath upholds social order by rejecting her own sexuality. In refusing to marry Darrow, she takes a stand against the destabilizing forces of incestuous longing but loses her own …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Anxiety And Social Support Systems, Nancy Knight Miller Jan 1992

A Study Of The Relationship Between Anxiety And Social Support Systems, Nancy Knight Miller

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The study was designed to investigate the relationship between anxiety and social support systems. University students (N = 145) were given two questionnaires. On the first questionnaire the students were required to respond to questions assessing their anxiety levels. On the second questionnaire the students were required to respond to questions assessing the levels of social support which they may have or perceive that they can access if and when they need it. A descriptive analysis of the data was made and significant negative correlation was found to exist between levels of social support and anxiety. Thus, it is important …

Models For Estimating Compensation For College Graduates Entering Careers In Business, Charles F Barr Jan 1992

Models For Estimating Compensation For College Graduates Entering Careers In Business, Charles F Barr

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This paper examines the influence of six personal and human capital characteristics on incomes of college graduates in five different business occupational categories. The characteristics studied are age, race, sex, marital status, bachelors or advanced degree, and employment in the private or public sector. The influence of these characteristics are examined in the fields of management, marketing, accounting, banking, and economics; A theoretical earnings model is constructed and tested using regression analysis of annual earnings against the above characteristics. Separate regressions are applied to each of the five occupational categories. The results are then compared across categories to demonstrate the …

Videocentric Criticism, Postmodernism And The Deconstruction Of Television, Christopher James Taylor Jan 1992

Videocentric Criticism, Postmodernism And The Deconstruction Of Television, Christopher James Taylor

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research offers an alternative method to the study of visual narrative. It criticizes Western society's videocentrism, or centering of television as the predominant medium of communicating to mass society. This method is known as videocentric criticism; Chapter one assesses the modern and postmodern condition. Philosophy from the Greek and modern Enlightenments suggests that Western society's videocentrism is a developing process originating in these periods. It then addresses modernity and postmodernity. Postmodern cultural phenomena that progressed in proximity with the evolution of television is discussed; Chapter two defines videocentric criticism. Narrative, structuralism, post-structuralism, and deconstruction are applied to televisual information. …

The Recurring Appeals Of The Mormon Rhetorical Vision, Arthur Thomas Challis

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigates the recurring appeals of the Mormon rhetorical vision, appeals that help account for the growth of the Mormon Church which is now eight million; Bormann's Fantasy Theme Analysis, a communication model that explains how small groups develop imaginative ideas and concepts called fantasy themes that form rhetorical visions and chain out to society, is the overall methodology used in investigating the Mormon vision, while Fisher's narrative fidelity and coherence, and Rieke and Sillars' American Value Systems are used as procedural enhancements to Bormann's model; This rhetorical vision displays fidelity with three American value systems while partaking in …

Identity And Community Through Sport Boosterism, Tim Delaney Jan 1992

Identity And Community Through Sport Boosterism, Tim Delaney

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

American society of the 1990's is characterized by a high degree of fragmentation, geographic mobility and general feelings of a dramatically changing social world. For various reasons, every year many people move from their birth homes, leaving behind established affiliations and networks. Consequently, they may find it difficult to develop a sense of identity of community. Today, sports, via fan association or "booster clubs," may serve as the vehicle for identity maintenance and transition into a new community. The effects of joining a sports booster group is examined by using questionnaire data from a survey conducted on members of the …

Family Decision Making In Convention Participation, Haemoon Oh Jan 1992

Family Decision Making In Convention Participation, Haemoon Oh

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The results of this study show that family members influenced the decisions linked to convention travel to Las Vegas. As a secondary result of this study, family decision making in convention participation appeared to be slightly husband-dominant even though spouses perceived spousal equality in decision making roles. Among the studied variables, the two major motives for family convention travel were convention participation itself and spouses' desire to accompany the participant on the trip. The respondents reported they best perceived their spouses' preferences and desire to accompany them on the trip. Gender and household income appeared to be the strongest factors …

The Progression Of Photographic Image Manipulation In Communication: An Argument Against The "Revolution" Of Technological Change, Cynthia Lynn Wood Jan 1992

The Progression Of Photographic Image Manipulation In Communication: An Argument Against The "Revolution" Of Technological Change, Cynthia Lynn Wood

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The technology of photographic image manipulation has evolved faster than our ability to consider its implications. This thesis looks at the recent evolution of image manipulation, which some regard as a "revolution." The various stages of technological progression are examined using examples according to Brian Winston's model of technological change. These stages include: scientific competence, ideation, prototypes, supervening necessity, invention, the 'law' of the suppression of radical potential, and technological performance. A review of literature on the topic of photography in communication is included as well as an examination of the early photographers who used image manipulation in their work. …

Policy Making And Civic Involvement: Apathy Or Impotence?, Chris Gregory Kuchuris Jan 1992

Policy Making And Civic Involvement: Apathy Or Impotence?, Chris Gregory Kuchuris

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis discusses the current problems surrounding civic participation. Conventional political wisdom tells us that many people have become apathetic when it comes to getting involved in politics. However, I will argue that policy makers misconstrue their perception of the public because they are operating from paradigms which are not democratic. When policy makers operate from these faulty paradigms, the role of the public becomes subordinated and the public is effectively "locked out" of the political decision-making process. I will offer an alternative to the current paradigms in an attempt to restore the proper role of the citizens to public …

The Right To Die: An Old Woman's Formula, Mary Guinan Mar 1991

The Right To Die: An Old Woman's Formula, Mary Guinan

School of Public Health Faculty Research

On December 26, 1990, Nancy Cruzan died, 12 days after her feeding tube was removed. She had been in an irreversible coma for seven years and her parents had sued for the right to remove the feeding tube that was keeping her alive. The pain and suffering of her family in coming to this decision was certainly compounded by those who disagreed with them and tried to prevent the extubation. Whether one agrees with this particular decision or not, most of us will not be faced with such clear alternatives, ie, leave the tube in or take it out in …

The Best Of Times, The Worst Of Times: A Bio-Cultural Analysis Of The Ferguson District, 1892-1909, Dawna Eileen Ferris

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study concerns an analysis of the Ferguson District, a late 19th-early 20th century gold mining district in southeastern Lincoln County, Nevada. Historical events are reconstructed for the boom years between 1892-1909 and critical bio-cultural variables investigated. The hypothesis that silicosis ("miner's consumption") was the leading cause of death in the District during this period is tested. Mortality and morbidity rates in the study area are compared with similar data from two other Nevada mining regions; The results of the study indicate that infectious and chronic diseases of the respiratory system accounted for over 25 percent of the Ferguson District …
