The Dilemma Of Development Policy In The Third World And Some Ramifications For Women, Pamela Jones Brown Jan 1995

The Dilemma Of Development Policy In The Third World And Some Ramifications For Women, Pamela Jones Brown

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The first part of this thesis deals with the theoretical approaches to development and a discussion of the dilemma facing the policy makers in choosing the best approach to the Third World. I then offer examples from South Africa and India which support the premise of economic prosperity versus ethical concerns; Lastly, the ramifications for women affected by Third World Development are presented with an emphasis upon the disruptive influences of advanced capitalist countries in their attempt to modernize technology and promote industrialization. The complexity of societal implications is explored from economic and political to social and cultural concerns.

Terrorism And The New International Environment, Dong Jin Kim Jan 1995

Terrorism And The New International Environment, Dong Jin Kim

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines the characteristics of terrorism in the new international environment following the Cold War in which international terrorism is undergoing drastic changes in its sources and characteristics; The breakdown of the bipolar system and concomitant diffusion of political power have given way to rivalry between regional states; especially, one of the key factors is the effect of weapons proliferation on the dynamics of conflict between regional rivals including nuclear, biological, and chemical-weapons capability. The world is also confronting an assortment of prodemocracy and anti-colonial movements which tend to erupt in civil disorder. The above ingredients are currently fomenting …

Interpretations Of The Meaning Of Care: Creating Caring Relationships In A Middle School Classroom, Nora Irene Alder Jan 1995

Interpretations Of The Meaning Of Care: Creating Caring Relationships In A Middle School Classroom, Nora Irene Alder

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this year long interpretive study was to examine the creation of caring relationships among and the meanings of care to middle school students and their teacher. Specifically, I asked what care means to middle school aged students and their teacher; how caring relationships are created by middle school students and their teacher; and what influences support a teacher's inclination to care?;Because caring relationships are interactive and subject to the interpretations of the people involved in those relationships, symbolic interactionism was the framework for the study. Qualitative methodology for data gathering and the constant comparative method of data …

A Comparison Of Membership To Nonmembership In A Sorority In Terms Of Gambling Behavior, Elizabeth Jane Boudreau

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare UNLV national social sorority members and non sorority female students with regards to gambling behavior in order to illustrate that belonging to a sorority provides a co-ed with a more productive and fulfilling experience at college. This study also provided a research design and gambling questionnaire for use on other college campuses to evaluate students in terms of gambling behavior. In the fall semester of 1995, a 70-item questionnaire was administered to 267 female students. Sorority membership/nonmembership was the independent variable. Dependent variables were related to gambling behavior; the exact number was …

The Use Of Temporal Constructs As A Model For Understanding Perceptions Of Environmental Hazard, Victoria Koehler-Jones Jan 1995

The Use Of Temporal Constructs As A Model For Understanding Perceptions Of Environmental Hazard, Victoria Koehler-Jones

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

An extreme physical event, such as a flood, becomes a hazard when social structures and systems are endangered by it--and it becomes a disaster when these structures and systems are actually disrupted. As the twenty-first century approaches and population pressures continue to grow, natural disasters will occur with greater frequency, bringing serious consequences for more people than ever before. The problem of minimizing damage is aggravated by inadequate recognition of hazard in time to mitigate or prevent disaster; This thesis develops a framework for understanding how perceptions of natural hazard are associated with ideas about the passage of time and …

Differential Oppression, Alienation And Edgework: Keys To Understanding Juvenile Delinquency, William John Miller Jan 1995

Differential Oppression, Alienation And Edgework: Keys To Understanding Juvenile Delinquency, William John Miller

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study tests several tenets of the theory of differential oppression. The theory of differential oppression suggests that the social order is created by adults for adults. Children are forced to conform to this order, despite their possible reluctance, because they lack the power to create meaningful social change. The extended use of power by adults leads to the oppression of children. The theory of differential oppression maintains that delinquency is one possible reaction to oppression; This study also attempts to expand the theory of differential oppression by addressing the role of alienation in the development of delinquency. It suggests …

Promoting The Nation: The Rise Of Ethno-Nationalism And Early Modern Drama, David Elwood Phillips Jan 1995

Promoting The Nation: The Rise Of Ethno-Nationalism And Early Modern Drama, David Elwood Phillips

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Most political scientists locate the rise of ethno-nationalism in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. English ethno-nationalism is developed throughout that period through a xenophobic identification of racial, religious, and national others. This study examines how Thomas Kyd, Christopher Marlowe, Willian Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, and Thomas Middleton promote English ethno-nationalism through the use of stereotypes, especially the collection of stereotypes known as the Black Legend of Spain. Chapter one outlines the theory and psychology of ethno-nationalism, laying the foundation for subsequent chapters devoted to specific plays, including Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy, Marlowe's The Jew of the Malta, Shakespeare's The …

Family Court: An Analysis Of A Unified Judicial System To Serve The Administration Of Justice For All Juvenile And Family Matters, Lori Ann Higdon

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Several states have created family courts by coordinating juvenile and family law matters within one court in an effort to provide efficient and timely service delivery to children and families. This thesis will evaluate this court model by providing a literary review, including problems facing children and families. Ethical concerns regarding family preservation, the quality of justice, parent's rights vs states obligations, punishment vs rehabilitation and the social worker vs cop role conflict will be included. A survey which was conducted as a part of this thesis together with a previous survey provides current evidence supporting the premise that the …

Mental Rotation And Sexual Orientation, Patricia Ann Wade Jan 1995

Mental Rotation And Sexual Orientation, Patricia Ann Wade

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Mental rotation, a type of visuo-spatial ability, is the ability to imagine a figure rotating in space without verbal mediation. Gender differences in the performance of mental rotation tasks are well documented but the relationship between sexual orientation and mental rotation is uncertain. This study investigates the relationship between gender, sexual orientation and scores of 584 university students on the Vandenberg Mental Rotation Test. A 2 x 2 ANOVA reveals a main effect for gender, a main effect for sexual orientation, and significant interaction between gender and sexual orientation. Mental rotation scores differentiate heterosexual male students from gay male, lesbian, …

Where Are The Girls? Gender Differences In Secondary Science And Math Grades, Jeff Matthew Ommen Jan 1995

Where Are The Girls? Gender Differences In Secondary Science And Math Grades, Jeff Matthew Ommen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

To investigate gender differences in secondary science and math grades, I used a cumulative numerical grade, a method to reduce a single student's many grades into a single number. Subjects were 640 students, who graduated from two small, mid-west high schools from the years of 1986-1993. Gender differences in cumulative numerical grades were not continuously supported in single class tests, in single school tests, or combined school tests. There were instances gender differences in cumulative numerical grade were upheld, however. A definite interaction was evident between math and science cumulative numerical grades. The differences between male and female cumulative numerical …

An Analysis Of Smoking And Gambling Among Las Vegas Visitors, John Paul Koenen Jan 1995

An Analysis Of Smoking And Gambling Among Las Vegas Visitors, John Paul Koenen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research surveyed 414 Las Vegas visitors and obtained information on smoking status, gambling behavior, opinions of a smoking ban in casinos, and the effect a smoking ban would have on casino patronage. This information was analyzed to determine if there is an association between smoking and gambling among Las Vegas visitors; The study found that 24 percent of Las Vegas visitors smoke. Smokers spent more hours per day in casinos and budgeted more money for gambling than non-smokers. Smokers and non-smokers stayed in Las Vegas about the same number of nights and had the same number of repeat visits …

Life History, Diversity And Patterns Of Bat Community Structure In The Spring Mountains Of Southern Nevada, Marikay Allene Ramsey Jan 1995

Life History, Diversity And Patterns Of Bat Community Structure In The Spring Mountains Of Southern Nevada, Marikay Allene Ramsey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the bat community of the Spring Mountains of southern Nevada from June 1992 through September 1994. Distributions, life history and general ecological attributes of fourteen species of bats were summarized. Thirteen species were present in low to mid elevations, ten species in mid to high elevations, and three species at all elevations. Bats were most abundant in mid summer. Few differences were found among species in time of activity. The ranges of temperatures in which bats were active generally reflected their habitat use. Maximum and minimum temperatures, and weather were the abiotic factors best predicting bat activity; …

Living The Bomb: Martin Amis's Nuclear Fiction, Rebecca L Bostick Jan 1995

Living The Bomb: Martin Amis's Nuclear Fiction, Rebecca L Bostick

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Living the Bomb: Martin Amis's Nuclear Fiction examines the importance of nuclear issues in Amis's fiction, particularly Einstein's Monsters and London Fields. Critical attention is given to Amis's concept of "thinkability," his political agenda and the effect of nuclear weaponry on his literature. Amis's nuclear symbolism is examined and the corrupt effect of nuclear weapons on our powers of creation (literal and artistic) and the environment is illustrated. Finally, Amis's anti-nuclear philosophy is linked with feminism: both espouse pacifism and a reinventing of gender roles in a post-nuclear world.

Determining Recreational Visitor Carrying Capacity: The Case Of Black Canyon At Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Kenneth C. Forman

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Lake Mead and Lake Mohave, created by Hoover and Davis Dams respectively, were combined, along with much of the surrounding area, into the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in 1964. The enabling legislation is specific about the duty the National Park Service has to the public to create and maintain this, and other, national recreation areas for the benefit of the visitors, the environment, and future generations. By investigating human impacts on the physical environment (water quality, litter, etc.) and by querying park users on their opinions (with respect to crowding, visitor behavior, etc.), insight can be gained about appropriate …

The Relation Of Socioeconomic And Cognitive Variables To Dropout From A Salvation Army Drug Rehabilitation Program, Mark Bruce Ireland

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A group of 134 substance abusers from two Salvation Army Rehabilitation programs: the CDIP (Chemical Dependency Intervention Program) and the CDRP (Chemical Dependency Rehabilitation Program) were administered at intake to the program a demographic form, the CMRS (Circumstances, Motivation, Readiness and Suitability Scales), the Novaco Provocation Inventory (NPI) and the Cognitive Triad Inventory (CTI). A stepwise hierarchical analysis for each treatment was used to test the hypothesis asserts that the addition of cognitive factors would improve the prediction rate of dropout using demographic variables alone. Results supported this for the CDIP, but not the CDRP. The second hypothesis was that …

Interactions Within The Social Environment Of Schools: Perspectives On Dropouts Voices Of Administrators, Teachers, Stay-Ins, And Dropouts, Andre Brent Denson Jan 1994

Interactions Within The Social Environment Of Schools: Perspectives On Dropouts Voices Of Administrators, Teachers, Stay-Ins, And Dropouts, Andre Brent Denson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study explored perceptions of administrators, teachers, stay-ins, and dropouts about personal interactions and the influence of a school's social environment on interactions as they pertained to students dropping out of high school. Symbolic Interactionism and Moos' Social Environment Theories served as the theoretical basis for framing the investigation of interactions within a school's social environment; This study was conducted at two comprehensive high schools in the Clark County School District (Las Vegas, NV). Participants consisted of six school administrators, six teachers, six stay-ins (students who remained in school), and six dropouts who were evenly divided between the two selected …

Power And The Professorship: Perceptions Of Sexual Harassment, Melissa J Monson Jan 1994

Power And The Professorship: Perceptions Of Sexual Harassment, Melissa J Monson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study explores the relationship between professorial awareness of personal power and the likelihood of labeling professor/student dating and repeated requests for dates by a professor as sexual harassment. Data from a sample of UNLV teaching faculty (N = 276) suggests that professors who have higher levels of awareness of the personal power which they hold over students were more likely than professors with low levels of power awareness to label professor/student dating as well as repeated requests for dates by a professor as sexual harassment. Further it was found that differences in level of power awareness explained away gender …

Personality And Marital Satisfaction: The Role Of Similarity And Psychological Health, Gretchen Garcia Jan 1994

Personality And Marital Satisfaction: The Role Of Similarity And Psychological Health, Gretchen Garcia

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

I examined how similarity between spouses' personalities and absolute levels of the personality traits among spouses were related to marital satisfaction in a sample of 76 heterosexual couples. Personality characteristics were measured with the Index of Self-esteem and the NEO-Five Factor Inventory, which assesses levels of Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Conscientiousness, and Agreeableness. The Dyadic Adjustment Scale was used to measure marital satisfaction. Personality domains that are associated with psychological health including Neuroticism, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, and Self-esteem would correlate to marital satisfaction. Moreover, it was hypothesized that similarity of the spouses on the factors of Extraversion and Openness would be positively …

Realism And Incongruity Oliver Wendell Holmes And Felix Frankfurter Mentor And Novitiate On The Court, Marlene Surell Geiser Jan 1994

Realism And Incongruity Oliver Wendell Holmes And Felix Frankfurter Mentor And Novitiate On The Court, Marlene Surell Geiser

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Oliver Wendell Holmes and Felix Frankfurter are worthy of examination because in many ways their tenures on the Supreme Court presented a fascinating study in similarity; To study these judges is to be privy to a relationship that began at Harvard Law School and would display itself in a shared intellectual elitism that importantly defined the years each of them sat on the bench. Examining their work is discovering a strong thread of similarity that binds both their lives in law and their philosophy as human beings. Because neither can be irrevocably categorized, they typify that special quality which sets …

Woodstock: The Creation And Evolution Of A Myth, Jo Raelene Sorrell Jan 1994

Woodstock: The Creation And Evolution Of A Myth, Jo Raelene Sorrell

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, the 1969 Woodstock festival will be studied as a myth which has been perpetuated by the media. To show that Woodstock has indeed become a myth, this study looks at the way the festival has been reported in the media and understood by the public; First, Woodstock is analyzed as a cultural event of the 1960s. That decade is described in order to give the reader perspective about the political and sociological influence that Woodstock has on American culture; A number of scholars, including Eliade, Braden, and Rowland, have theorized that myth is an important cultural event. …

The Simulation Of Selfhood In Cyberspace, Denise Michelle Dalaimo Jan 1994

The Simulation Of Selfhood In Cyberspace, Denise Michelle Dalaimo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The first part of this paper is a socio-historical inquiry into various conceptions of self and selfhood from ancient to postmodern times. Part two is the product of ethnographic research conducted on the Internet which examines the simulation and evocation of selfhood in Cyberspace. Specific "Cyburgs" examined include electronic mail, newsgroups, discussion lists, and multi-user realities. While "results" as such were not expected--nor desired--an evocation of this particular ethnographic experience reveals that Cyberspace is the ultimate environment for the nourishment of the fragmented, multi-phrenic, contradictory postmodern self. Visual anonymity and lack of social status cues allow the user to experiment …

Child Sexual Molestation By Priests And Reactions Of Catholic Parishioners: A Comparative Study, Merlinda Raquel Gallegos Jan 1994

Child Sexual Molestation By Priests And Reactions Of Catholic Parishioners: A Comparative Study, Merlinda Raquel Gallegos

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This sociological study explores the effects an incident of sexual abuse of a minor by a priest has on Catholic parishioners. An interpretation of a comparative analysis was done between a parish in which an incident of sexual abuse of a minor by a priest occurred and a demographically similar parish with no such reported incident. Data from face-to-face survey interviews (N = 100) suggests that members of the Catholic Church whose parish priest had sexually abused children were more likely to indicate lower levels of approval toward Church policies than parishioners whose parish had no reported incident of abuse. …

Environmental Justice And Participatory Democracy: An Emancipatory Policy Proposal, Nancy Christine Gott Jan 1994

Environmental Justice And Participatory Democracy: An Emancipatory Policy Proposal, Nancy Christine Gott

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Environmental Justice and Participatory Democracy: An Emancipatory Policy Proposal analyzes the public participation guidelines for the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. The author argues that four challenges must be addressed before the goal of environmental justice can be achieved. These challenges include the challenge of citizen participation, the epistemological challenge, the challenge of integrating public values with technical concerns, and the challenge of balancing environmental rights and responsibilities. The author develops a policy proposal for the creation of neighborhood environmental justice community centers in low-income neighborhoods.

Analysis And Evaluation Of The Workplace Exposure Assessment Workbook Developed By Keith Tait Including Some Recommended Revisions, Lisa Hebberd Oct 1993

Analysis And Evaluation Of The Workplace Exposure Assessment Workbook Developed By Keith Tait Including Some Recommended Revisions, Lisa Hebberd

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Some risk due to the contamination of workplace environments is an inevitable part of human lives. These risks can often be reduced by improving the control of environmental pollution in the workplace. An extremely important challenge for any industry is to develop a mechanism to identify acceptable levels of safety, or "acceptable risk" in the workplace for specific situations, and to assure adequate quality control over measured or calculated exposure concentrations and their possible contributions to adverse health effects.
