The Window, The Mirror, And The Stone: A Reassessment Of The Roles Of Mimesis And Opsis In Critical Theory, Andrea J Hanson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis develops three interpretive classifications based on mimetic and opsitic verbal structures. First, the classification of the "window" is described. Second, the aspects of the "mirror" are discussed and illustrated. Third, the features of the "stone" are analyzed and clarified; The theoretical description of mimetic discourse is based on M. H. This thesis expands upon his critical classifications for mimetic literature and adds an additional classification to deal with opsitic verbal structures, namely the "stone."; The "window" is shown to include discourse that depicts the world or universe …
Domestic Violence: Physicians A Link To Prevention, Mary Guinan
Domestic Violence: Physicians A Link To Prevention, Mary Guinan
School of Public Health Faculty Research
Domestic violence may result in more injuries and fatalities for women than automobile crashes, muggings, and rapes combined, but according to a recent editorial, physicians largely ignore the problem. Evidence showed that a majority of women treated at an emergency facility for injuries resulting from violent acts of spouses or other persons known to the victims were discharged without any arrangement being made for their future safety. Physicians rarely inquired about an injury victim's past sexual or physical abuse, living arrangements, or future prospects of safety.

Effects Of Athletic Participation And Gender On Moral Judgment In Student Athletes And Nonathletes, Elizabeth Mary Baldizan
Effects Of Athletic Participation And Gender On Moral Judgment In Student Athletes And Nonathletes, Elizabeth Mary Baldizan
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to assess moral development of student athletes and nonathletes, employing James Rest's (1979, 1988) Defining Issues Test (DIT). Rest adapted Kohlberg's cognitive moral development theory to an objective measurement tool, the Defining Issues Test, which investigates moral judgment by examining the choices an individual makes in solving a series of moral dilemmas. Each subject obtained a Principled Morality Score which was interpreted as the relative importance attributed to principled moral considerations in making moral decisions. Participants for the study from intercollegiate athletics were from women's basketball and softball teams, and men's intercollegiate soccer and …

The Role Of Friendship In Arthur Miller: A Study Of Friendship In His Major Dramatic And Non-Dramatic Writing, Carlos Alejandro Campo
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study examines the role of friendship in Arthur Miller's work from his book of reportage, Situation Normal to his latest play, The Ride Down Mount Morgan, attempting to show that friendship is a central and recurrent topic in Miller's work, both dramatic and non-dramatic; In chapter 1, the "Introduction," I trace Miller's ideas about friendship, which were framed during the Depression and solidified through his study of American training bases in WWII. Miller seems to contend that if all members of society could respond through friendship as the men in the military did, we would eliminate many social ills …

The final part of this research outlines a basic program of action designed to fill the existing …
A Phenomenological Criticism: A Phenomenologically Based Methodology For Analyzing Theatrical Works, Roberta Sterman Sabbath
A Phenomenological Criticism: A Phenomenologically Based Methodology For Analyzing Theatrical Works, Roberta Sterman Sabbath
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The thesis, using Husserlian phenomenology, presents a descriptive, analytical approach for theatrical works. The methodology consists of two parts: "feeling" and "meaning." "Feeling" covers the reader/viewer's experience of the work; "meaning" covers the source of that experience in the work. An introductory portion asks the analyzer to describe the autonomous aspects of the work. The evaluative conclusion asks the reader/viewer to describe change or lack thereof in the personal perspective; Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Edith Stein's treatment of empathy, and Ernst Cassirer's paradigms of cultural expression are all used to enrich the analytical approach. Two plays, Caryl Churchill and …
A Community's Dominant Religion: A Counter Definition, Geremia Veglia
A Community's Dominant Religion: A Counter Definition, Geremia Veglia
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Religious orientations, practices, and attitudes held by people relate in many ways to their behavior in secular society. To evaluate these various relationships several questions were considered. To what degree do religious beliefs influence an individual's daily attitudes and behaviors? Is there a segment of society that benefits from religious practices? Is a part of society harmed by these beliefs?;Seeking to eliminate the possible effects of diffusion and acculturation, a rural town with a dominant religious ideology was chosen. Of the hamlet's four thousand people approximately seventy-five percent were Mormon; The data was compiled using a complete participant observer research …

Attitudes Of College Students Toward The World Food Crisis, Susan Ann Nartker
Attitudes Of College Students Toward The World Food Crisis, Susan Ann Nartker
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In the fall of 1990, a survey was conducted to examine the attitudes of 79 college students toward the world food crisis. The findings from this study were then compared with the results from a study conducted in 1975 which examined the attitudes of 72 college students toward the world food crisis. The survey questionnaire constructed for the 1975 study was used in the 1990 study. In the 1990 study, only two categories showed significant change: (1) subjects felt less personally threatened by the food crisis than in 1975, and (2) respondents felt less sure that population control offered any …
The Effects Of Economic Recession On Community, Linda Kay Roe
The Effects Of Economic Recession On Community, Linda Kay Roe
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This research project was designed to examine the effects changes in economic conditions--notably, changes which occurred during the recession of the early 1980s--have had on patterns of social interaction in rural, specifically mining-dependent communities. The study was conducted in two communities located in Northeastern Minnesota during the spring of 1990. Data were gathered via a mailed questionnaire, which was developed to assess patterns of social interaction before, during, and after the recession. The analysis showed both communities experienced an increase in orientation toward extracommunity systems over the three periods. Age was specified as a condition which affected changes in perception …

What Is The Health Impact Of Day Care Attendance On Infants And Preschoolers?, Ruth L. Berkelman, Mary Guinan, Phen B. Thacker
School of Public Health Faculty Research
The impact of various child care arrangements on the health of infants and preschool children is not known in any systematic way, yet by 1990 more than 10 million of these children may be receiving their care in day care facilities (1). Concerns over the health of these children and health practices within day care facilities have already led some States to place regulation of day care facilities under the jurisdiction of the department of health (2,3), and others are presently considering such legislation. In addition, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recently published "Health in Day Care," a manual …

An Ethnographic Analysis Of The Workplace In A Selected Year-Round School, Kelly Ann Sturdy
An Ethnographic Analysis Of The Workplace In A Selected Year-Round School, Kelly Ann Sturdy
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study sought to describe the workplace of the year-round school using the structure of Johnson's workplace theory. The rationale for conducting the study was based on the assumption that the nature of the workplace affects the teaching/learning act. Teachers' perceptions of the workplace ultimately influence their attitudes, efforts, and commitment toward the act of teaching. The year-round school schedule was found to influence teachers' perceptions of their workplace; The frequent breaks of the year-round schedule were perceived as beneficial for both students and teachers by providing alternate vacation opportunities, time for inexperienced teachers to evaluate and plan instructional strategies, …
The Subjective Nature Of Decision-Makers In The Domain Of Objective Sentence Processing, William Bud Brown
The Subjective Nature Of Decision-Makers In The Domain Of Objective Sentence Processing, William Bud Brown
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Selective incapacitation has been defined as an objective process whereby violent and/or chronic offenders are isolated and given longer prison terms. The purpose of this process is to keep these offenders out of society for longer periods of time resulting in a safer society. Couched within this utilitarian perspective is the assumption that the social sciences have developed a reputable formula from which future criminal behavior can be accurately predicted. This research, a case study of a Nevada presentence investigation unit, found that all convicted offenders are dealt with using the same criteria applied to violent and/or chronic offenders. This …

The Relationship Between Suicidal Phenomena And Depression, Dysfunctional Attitudes, Irrational Beliefs, And Hopelessness, Shonna L Erickson
The Relationship Between Suicidal Phenomena And Depression, Dysfunctional Attitudes, Irrational Beliefs, And Hopelessness, Shonna L Erickson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The study of depression and suicidal phenomena among adolescents has lagged behind that of adults. Very few studies have examined attitudes and beliefs of relevance to cognitive therapy among suicidal adolescents. In this study 40 incarcerated juvenile females were administered the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Dysfunctional Attitude Scale (DAS), the Irrational Beliefs Test (IBT), and the Hopelessness Scale (HS). A stepwise discriminant analysis identified seven variables which significantly differentiated the suicidal from the nonsuicidal group. These variables were number of previous attempts, the HS, DAS, subscales 4, 5, and 8 of the IBT (Frustration reactive, emotional irresponsibility, and dependency, …
Drinking-Driving And Social Control: An Analysis Of Peer Intervention, Michael David Collins
Drinking-Driving And Social Control: An Analysis Of Peer Intervention, Michael David Collins
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The present study contends that legislative sanctions, regardless of severity, cannot sufficiently curb the drunken driver unless they are met with the concern of an equally sanctitive public (Formby and Smykla, 1984). The explicit goal of research presented here is to report the extent and power of peer sanction surrounding potential drinking and driving situations. This goal consists of the following components: (1) to discern whether individuals are at all inclined to attempt intervention in situations of potential drunken driving, and if so, to ascertain the types of intervention techniques attempted as well as intervention settings; (2) to determine which …

Virginity And Celibacy As Health Issues, Mary Guinan
Virginity And Celibacy As Health Issues, Mary Guinan
School of Public Health Faculty Research
Sexual behavior is both a health issue and a moral issue. Hence public education on sexuality has traditionally come from two main sources, those individuals or groups concerned with health and those concerned with morals. In his book No Magic Bullet (Oxford University Press, 1985), Allan Brandt describes the tensions that developed between these groups over the control of sexually transmitted diseases in the United States early in this century. Both groups wanted to control sexual behavior, but for different reasons. Public health personnel wanted to change sexual behavior in order to control infection and disease, while moralists believed that …

Pms Or Perifollicular Phase Euphoria?, Mary Guinan
School of Public Health Faculty Research
Why is it that so little is known about PMS? First of all, there is no agreement on what PMS is. If investigators are referring to different sets of symptoms, how can studies be comparable? In fact, they are not. Not only are the symptoms different, but the timing of symptoms is different, Some studies describe symptoms that occur 7 to 10 days before the onset of menses, while others include symptoms that begin 14 days before the onset of menses and continue for 7 days after onset. This definition suggests that women may have PMS-related symptoms during 21 days …
