Comparison Of Littoral And Limnetic Zooplankton Communities Of Lake Mead, Patrick Joseph Sollberger
Comparison Of Littoral And Limnetic Zooplankton Communities Of Lake Mead, Patrick Joseph Sollberger
Publications (WR)
Microfaunal communities were studied in littoral (inshore) and limnetic (offshore) areas of the lower basin in Lake Mead to compare species composition and abundance between the two zones. Planktonic forms (zooplankton) dominated inshore and offshore habitats and the occurrence of littoral species was low. Therefore, high similarity in zooplankton species composition was found among all sampling stations. This was perhaps due to two main factors: (i) the physical and chemical environment among the stations were very similar and (ii) the lack of aquatic vegetation in the littoral zone reduced the occurrence of littoral species.
Although species composition did not vary …

Locus-Of-Control Orientation And Assessment Center Performance As Predictors In An Administrative Selection Process, Gail Williams Dixon
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if locus of control orientation was related to the assessment center performance of prospective school administrators. It was not known if locus of control orientation and assessment center performance described similar administrative characteristics. If a relationship existed, locus of control orientation could be considered a valid predictor for use in an administrative selection process; The quantitative descriptive, correlation study was based on data gathered from participants in the Nevada Assessment Center from fall of 1985 thru spring of 1988. The sample (n = 120) consisted of individuals who had appropriately completed both …

The Hyperrationalization Of Nevada's Schools: 1975-1990, Lauren Marie Kohut
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Public school education has always been perceived by the public as an institution to which laymen from all walks of life would provide input, good or bad, insightful or ignorant, solicited or unsolicited. The assumed responsibility phenomenon helped legitimize the continued contributions by the public of new concepts and ideas by which schools could supposedly solve glaring problems purportedly being experienced; The institution of education has always embraced the introduction of new concepts (either wholeheartedly or begrudgingly) and consequently became subject to the inevitable bandwagon of professionals who have continually searched for the ever-elusive manner by which all individuals could …

Letter To The Editor (Human Immunodeficiency Virus In Costa Rica), Mark W. Oberle, Charles A. Schable, Mary Guinan, Luis Rosero
School of Public Health Faculty Research
Recent reports of 12 confirmed cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in Costa Rica have generated interest in the extent of spread of human T-lymphotropic virus type III/LAV (HTLV-III) in Latin America (1). To date, all cases of AIDS in Costa Rica have occurred in members of previously identified, high-risk groups, chiefly hemophiliacs. To examine the possibility of heterosexual transmission in Costa Rica, we utilized sera collected in a population-based case-control study of cervical cancer, conducted by the Costa Rican Demographic Association and other institution.
Romanticism And The Rise Of Sociological Hermeneutics, Dmitri N. Shalin
Romanticism And The Rise Of Sociological Hermeneutics, Dmitri N. Shalin
Sociology Faculty Research
Although biblical exegesis and rhetoric, from which modern hermeneutics derived its first principles, are ancient arts, an effort to establish hermeneutics as a universal science, and especially to extend its principles to the science of society, is of a decidedly recent origin. "There is little doubt," states Gouldner, "that hermeneutics' roots in the modern era are traceable to Romanticism." Why is this so, what makes romanticism fertile ground for hermeneutical speculations? Hans-Georg Gadamer, a leading authority on hermeneutics, makes this intriguing suggestion about its origins:
The hermeneutical problem only emerges clearly when there is no powerful tradition present to absorb …

The problem investigated in this study was the correlation, if any, between and among mean scores of various dimensions of self-concept and student self earned by 98 sixth grade public school students identified as gifted and nongifted. Findings suggested that dimensions of self-concept are not different in gifted and nongifted children, while dimensions of student self are different in gifted and nongifted children.
Cross-Validation With Learning-Disabled Students Of The Abbreviated Halstead-Reitan Battery For Older Children, Paul G Webb
Cross-Validation With Learning-Disabled Students Of The Abbreviated Halstead-Reitan Battery For Older Children, Paul G Webb
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The present study attempted to cross-validate a screening battery developed by Reitan and Herring (1985) from the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery for Children. Twenty-eight average (AC) 9-11 year olds were compared to 28 learning disabled (LD) students of similar age and IQ using the Reitan and Herring (1985) screening battery, with the addition of two tactile-perceptual tests--Tactile Finger Recognition (TFR) and Finger-Tip Number Writing Perception (FTWP). The Screening Index score discriminated significantly (p {dollar}<{dollar}.0005) between the LD and AC groups. The mean Screening Index score of the LD group (.23) was over twice as high as the AC group's mean score (.10), with an overall classification rate of 76% (90% for ACs, 62% for LDs). Converted scores (impairment ratings) of the individual measures (7) in the screening battery revealed only three statistically significant differences between the groups (p {dollar}<{dollar}.05); however, only 24% or less of the LD subjects earned converted scores within the impaired range on these three measure suggesting little practical diagnostic differentation between the groups using Selz and Reitan's (1979) impairment levels for the individual measures for LD classification. The tactile-perceptual tests were better discriminators between the groups with all but one statistical comparison reaching significance, both for raw and converted score means. Total Error and Right Hand Error mean scores were the most discriminating measures, and of the two tactile-perceptual tests, FTWP was the better discriminator between groups. The Aphasia Screening Test of the screening battery provided maximum separation between the groups classifying 95% of the subjects overall--100% of the ACs and 90% of the LDs; Results of this study support the use of Reitan and Herring's (1985) screening battery with 9-11 year olds as a screening instrument for disabilities from diagnosed or suspected CNS dysfunction, e.g., learning disability. The screen battery is clearly enhanced for LD screening with the inclusion of both tactile-perceptual measures--TFR and FTWP. The AST appears to offer the greatest diagnostic power for 9-11 year old LDs.

Prison Education Programs As Factors In Inmate Recidivism Rates, Harriet Rose Gagliano
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purposes of this study were to determine the effects of participation and completion of the CCSD prison education program by incarcerated male students on subsequent rates of recidivism; and to determine if there were any significant differences at the.05 level between 18 different dependent variables in inmate behavior. It was hypothesized that students who were program persisters/completers would have higher success rates once having achieved parole/expiration, and would have lower rates of recidivism. Students who were noncompleters/nonpersisters would have higher recidivism rates upon achieving parole/expiration. The variables were: (1) Current age; (2) Ethnicity; (3) Age at first admission; (4) …
