Fourteen measures from the Children's Personality Questionnaire, two measures from the Stanford Achievement Test, and attendance and discipline records were used to assess outcomes of this study. Analysis of variance with repeated measures revealed a significant post …

Reasoning And Decision Making: The Development Of A Short Text For The Adult Learner, Carrol Severns Steedman Jan 1985

Reasoning And Decision Making: The Development Of A Short Text For The Adult Learner, Carrol Severns Steedman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Adult learners (from high school through the late adult years) have a need for dialogical reasoning in active decision maKing Therefore, it was the purpose of this developmental study to write and test a short text (a primer using an innovative design) which infused the seven steps of decision making with elements from Aristotle's rhetoric/reasoning and from informal logic. The text introduced learners to critical thinking methods in creating alternatives in arguments for decisions impacting the future; Search of the literature included historical, political, sociological, educational, philosophical theory as it has influenced the teaching of reasoning in schools and colleges. …

Formalization In Intercollegiate Athletics: Development Of A Policies And Procedures Manual, Mary Sheila Strike Jan 1985

Formalization In Intercollegiate Athletics: Development Of A Policies And Procedures Manual, Mary Sheila Strike

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Intercollegiate athletics in the 1980's has undergone a series of crises which appear to have resulted in increased formalization, both within the National Collegiate Athletic Association and at most universities across the nation. The integrity crisis, whether real or perceived, has resulted in a call for accountability in athletics. Concurrently, there is a trend toward the development of policies and procedures manuals for athletic management; The theoretical basis of the study began with a focus on the ideology of business and industry in the early 1900's and the reasons for and results of formalization. The ideology of intercollegiate athletics in …

Power Motivation And Power Style Of Selected Successful Community College Presidents, Veldon Lee Law Jan 1985

Power Motivation And Power Style Of Selected Successful Community College Presidents, Veldon Lee Law

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The problem this study addressed was, what was the personal power management profile of selected successful community college presidents. In analyzation of this problem the power motivation and style theories of McClelland and Burnham, Blake and Mouton, and Hall and Hawker were used. The three sets of theorists had theorized about power motive and style and its implication for the "good or ideal" manager; The conjectures of these theorists and the practical writings of Fisher, Power In The Presidency, and Vaughn, The Community College Presidency, were applied to twenty community college presidents in the development of a power management profile. …

Benthic Diatom Community Dynamics In The Colorado River: Interactive Effects Of Periodic Dessication And Current Regime, Christopher Gerard Peterson Dec 1984

Benthic Diatom Community Dynamics In The Colorado River: Interactive Effects Of Periodic Dessication And Current Regime, Christopher Gerard Peterson

Publications (WR)

The response to periodic desiccation of periphyton communities developed in eddy environments or in areas exposed to variable, direct current was examined. Algal communities were incubated on clay tiles for between 2 and 12 weeks in the Colorado River, directly below Hoover Dam from October, 1983 - January, 1984. Mean daily discharge from the dam decreased over this period. To assess the influence of these discharge changes on community dynamics, samples collected over the first 12 weeks of the investigation were compared to samples of the same age collected over the final 8 weeks.

The small diatom taxon Achnahthes spp …

A Proposal To Fertilize The Overton Arm And Gregg Basin Areas Of Lake Mead, Larry J. Paulson Nov 1984

A Proposal To Fertilize The Overton Arm And Gregg Basin Areas Of Lake Mead, Larry J. Paulson

Publications (WR)

Several limnological studies have been conducted in Lake Mead during the past decade. The recent studies clearly show that most of Lake Mead is deficient in nutrients, especially phosphorus, and very low in productivity. The reservoir-wide average total phosphorus concentration for 1981 - 1982 was only 9 mg/m3. This is below levels found In most oligotrophic lakes and reservoirs. Algal biomass, as measured by chlorophyll-a, averaged only 1.5 mg/m3. That also places Lake Mead in the oligotrophic range. Transparency, as measured by a Secchi disc, averaged 9-5 m in Lake Mead during 1981-1982. That far exceeds …

Seasonal And Spatial Heterogeneity In The Limnetic Zooplankton Community Of Lake Mead, Gene Robert Wilde May 1984

Seasonal And Spatial Heterogeneity In The Limnetic Zooplankton Community Of Lake Mead, Gene Robert Wilde

Publications (WR)

Zooplankton samples collected from throughout Lake Mead, in 1981-1982, demonstrate the presence of a statistically significant seasonal and spatial heterogeneity in zooplankton densities. Seasonally, the major zooplankton groups were most abundant in the spring and fall, coincident with maxima in chlorophyll-a concentrations. Successions among the various rotifers, cladocerans and copepods present in the reservoir were influenced by food availability, diapause, predation by planktivorous fish and, possibly, water temperatures. Spatial heterogeneity in zooplankton densities was unrelated to water temperature, pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen concentrations, but was related to the abundance of phytoplankton (chlorophyll-a concentrations) and fish. Statistical analyses indicate that …

The Role Of Nannoplankton In The Phytoplankton Dynamics Of Four Colorado River Reservoirs (Lakes Powell, Mead, Mohave, And Havasu), Jeffrey John Janik May 1984

The Role Of Nannoplankton In The Phytoplankton Dynamics Of Four Colorado River Reservoirs (Lakes Powell, Mead, Mohave, And Havasu), Jeffrey John Janik

Publications (WR)

Phytoplankton species composition and community size structure were studied in four warm-monomictic Colorado River reservoirs; lakes Powell, Mead, Mohave, and Havasu from March 1981 to February 1982. Sampling was done at approximately monthly intervals from several stations in each reservoir. The Utermohl technique was used to enumerate phytoplankton. The phytoplankton assemblage was divided into the following six size classes using microscopic techniques; netplankton (>64 um), and nannoplankton (>5, 5-11, 12-21, 22-44, and 45-64 um).

Total phytoplankton biomass and community size structure were different among these four reservoirs with considerable spatial and temporal variation present. Average reservoir-wide areal weighted …

Publications (WR)

At the request of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Boulder City, Nevada, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Monitoring Systems Laboratory at Las Vegas collected multispectral scanner imagery of Las Vegas Wash on October 1, 1982. A combined maximum likelihood classification and editing procedure was used to classify the multispectral scanner imagery into 12 categories of land cover. The classification identified four categories of marsh vegetation, one category of riparian, two categories of mixed scrub, and two desert categories. Turbid water and cultivated land formed an "other" category. Area tabulations were formed by georeferencing the classification to the Universal Transverse …

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Homosexual and heterosexual patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome were compared by risk group. Race; diagnoses; history of sexually transmitted diseases, sexual behavior, and drug use; and socioeconomic indicators differed considerably among the risk groups, suggesting different risk factors for acquisition of the syndrome. Patients in the homosexual, intravenous drug user, and Haitian risk groups differed in their serologic response to cytomegalovirus and syphilis testing, presumably due to lifestyle-related exposures. Differences in the rate of recovery of cytomegalovirus, serum levels of IgA and IgG, and antibody titers to Epstein-Barr virus were noted among patients with different diagnoses. We conclude that …

Capitalism, Corporate Liberalism And Social Policy: The Origins Of The Social Security Act Of 1935, Barbara G. Brents Jan 1984

Capitalism, Corporate Liberalism And Social Policy: The Origins Of The Social Security Act Of 1935, Barbara G. Brents

Sociology Faculty Research

This paper looks at the involvement and influence of capitalists on the Social Security Act of 1935. Instead of positing direct corporate control, the research shows how social security was formulated within a corporate liberal ideological framework which defined problems and their solutions in terms of putting the maintenance of capitalism above the needs of individual workers. This framework set the limits of the, social insurance debates long before the act itself was written. The thesis is that the Social Security Act came about as a result of an interplay between the environment and an ideology advanced by corporate leaders …

Curriculum Theorizing/Curriculum Modelling And The Roman Catholic School System: Development Of A Theoretical Model For Curriculum Development And/Or Curriculum Improvement, James Charles Machinski

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Curriculum projects generally take place within a particular school system or district with the express purpose of meeting the needs of the students, community, and schools within that system. The Roman Catholic school system employs methods similar to those used in the public school system insofar as a curriculum theory/model may be adapted to meet its needs; It was the allusions to known curriculum theories/models which did not address the needs of the Roman Catholic school system in dealing with the process of curriculum development/improvement, the lack of comprehensive curriculum theories/models dealing exclusively with the Roman Catholic school system, and …

Factors Affecting Reproductive Success Of Bonytail Chubs And Razorback Suckers In Lake Mohave, Michael A. Bozek, Larry J. Paulson, James E. Deacon, U.S. Department Of Interior, Fish And Wildlife Service

Publications (WR)

Razorback suckers (Xyrauchen texanus) and bonytail chubs (Gila elegans) were once widespread throughout the Colorado River system. The ranges and populations of these native species and others have declined in the past 50 years. Bonytail chubs appear to be extremely rare and possibly nearing extinction in the Upper Colorado River Basin. The razorback sucker is widely distributed in the upper river but is considered rare throughout most of that range and is also rare in the Grand Canyon. Razorback suckers are abundant only in a few habitats in the upper river. They congregate and spawn over …

Resource Allocation In Public Education: A Thirty Five Year Historical Study Of Public School Budgets In Clark County, Nevada, William Allan Fisher

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This historical study analyzed thirty five years of public school expenditures for evidence of change in spending patterns to discover whether or not the organizational structure of the schools has been allowed to drift from public expectations; Budget expenditures from year to year were reclassified by the USED codes in Handbook II. This rigorous classification and the LOTUS 123 spread sheet enabled the researcher to hold all data constant; The study demonstrated that school boards' objectives had not changed between 1950 and 1985. Nevertheless, seven fundamental changes occurred in the operation of the schools and that all noninstructional school programs …

Water Quality Trends In The Las Vegas Wash Wetlands, F. A. Morris, L. J. Paulson Jan 1983

Water Quality Trends In The Las Vegas Wash Wetlands, F. A. Morris, L. J. Paulson

Publications (WR)

The Las Vegas Wash is a wetlands ecosystem that acts to buffer the effects of wastewater discharges on the receiving waters of Lake Mead. The wash is the terminus for the 4,144 km2 Las Vegas Valley drainage basin, emptying into Las Vegas Bay of Lake Mead (Colorado River). It is in the northern Mojave desert, which receives an average of only 10 cm of rainfall annually. The Las Vegas Wash is technically an artificial wetland supported almost entirely by the perennial flows from sewage treatment plants. These flows contribute an average of 3-7 t of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and …

The Effects Of Impoundments On Salinity In The Colorado River, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker Jan 1983

The Effects Of Impoundments On Salinity In The Colorado River, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker

Publications (WR)

The increase in salinity of our western rivers has been identified as one of the most serious water quality problems in the nation. This is of special concern in the Colorado River where salinity has increased from pristine levels estimated at 380 mg/1 to present-day levels of 825 mg/1 at Imperial Dam. Flow depletions, associated with decreased runoff and increased evaporation and diversions, coupled with high salt loading from natural and man-created sources are considered the primary causes for rising salinity in the river. The urban and agricultural development projected to occur in the basin through this century could deplete …
