Manipulations Of Task Switches During Acquisition: A Test Of The Elaboration Hypothesis Of Contextual Interference, Carol Helen Aloupis
Manipulations Of Task Switches During Acquisition: A Test Of The Elaboration Hypothesis Of Contextual Interference, Carol Helen Aloupis
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The effects of practice composition on retention performance of motor skills have been investigated by many researchers (e.g., Shea, Kohl, & Indermill, 1990) and the order of task presentation during practice has been determined to be critical in skill retention. Specifically, presenting a subject with several versions of a task typically produces poorer performance during practice but superior performance during retention, relative to a situation in which the same version of the task is presented repeatedly. This concept is known as contextual interference. Typically, it is the switching between task versions that is considered the critical manipulation, while the consistency …

A Theoretical Study Of Surface Kinetic Processes In The Mbe Growth Of Compound Semiconductors, Shridhar Gangadhar Bendi
A Theoretical Study Of Surface Kinetic Processes In The Mbe Growth Of Compound Semiconductors, Shridhar Gangadhar Bendi
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The surface kinetics processes in the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth of GaAs (100) and the MBE doping kinetics are studied theoretically, using a stochastic model which is based on the master equation approach and random distribution approximation. The kinetic processes included in the model are: adsorption, surface migration and evaporation. In the study of surface roughening kinetics in GaAs (100), a transition temperature at which time averaged RHEED intensity is maximum was observed. The RHEED intensity increases with temperature till the transition temperature and decreases beyond the transition temperature. The doping studies were performed for various growth conditions. The …

Dangerous Women, Dangerous Times: Women At The Nevada State Prison, 1890-1930, Donna Crail-Rugotzke
Dangerous Women, Dangerous Times: Women At The Nevada State Prison, 1890-1930, Donna Crail-Rugotzke
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This work examines the treatment Nevada's female prisoners received from Nevada's press, courts, and the Nevada State Prison from 1890 to 1930. It argues that gender perspectives held by Nevada's criminal justice officials caused them to treat female criminals both benevolently and harshly. This thesis also compares the treatment of minority women with Anglo women and finds minority women also received mixed treatment. Factors used to judge treatment include the sentences women received, how much of these sentences they served, the living conditions they faced at the Nevada State Prison and the conditions of their paroles and pardons.
Validation Of The Ymca's Guide To Setting Workloads For The Submaximal Cycle Ergometer Test, Nicole Marie-Smith Dacuma
Validation Of The Ymca's Guide To Setting Workloads For The Submaximal Cycle Ergometer Test, Nicole Marie-Smith Dacuma
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The YMCA cycle ergometer test is a nationally used submaximal test that measures heart rate response to an increasing exercise workload. Two exercise heart rates are used to estimate maximal physical working capacity. A workload guide was established to make testing more efficient. The principle underlying the workload guide was that the examiner would assess the heart rate response to the first low intensity workload and from there would set workloads according to the guide. Problems have occurred with the guide, specifically with the highest intensity workload column. The purpose of this study was to validate the YMCA's guide to …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Optical absorption and electrical conductivity measurements of solution-doped poly-3-octylthiophene (P3OT) films were studied. Chloroform solutions of P3OT were doped with the organic electron-acceptors, 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-l,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ); and with the inorganic electron acceptor, ferric chloride (FeCl{dollar}\sb3{dollar}). Charge transfer was observed in P3OT solutions doped with FeCl{dollar}\sb3{dollar} and DDQ. TCNQ-doped solutions showed no optical evidence of charge transfer. Thin films of the doped P3OT were examined at various doping levels. Spectroscopic and electrical conductivity measurements of P3OT films, doped with DDQ, TCNQ, and FeCl{dollar}\sb3{dollar}, at different doping levels, are presented. Optical absorption measurements provided information on the degree of charge …
Collection Of Gas Phase Chlorine Using Bonded Silica Sorbents, Bhaskar Tadepalli
Collection Of Gas Phase Chlorine Using Bonded Silica Sorbents, Bhaskar Tadepalli
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Sulfonamide functionalities bound to silica substrates have been investigated for collection of gas phase chlorine. Sorbents were prepared by bonding aminopropyl groups to a substrate (silica gel or filters) and then reacting with alkyl or aryl substituted sulfonyl chloride to produce the corresponding surface bound sulfonamide. Silica gel surfaces were investigated for collection efficiency using synthetic laboratory gas mixtures. After satisfactory collection efficiencies were demonstrated, sampling and analytical procedures were developed for analysis of air in the vicinity of a swimming pool. This method shows promise for applications in industrial settings and in atmospheric studies of the geochemical chlorine cycle.

The Effect Of Measurement Technique, And Load And Fatigue, With Changes In Crank Arm Length, On Lower Limb Kinematics In Cycle Ergometry, Chris D Williams
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The effect of measurement technique, and load and fatigue, with changes in crank arm length, on lower limb kinematics in cycle ergometry; Pedal forces in a cycling task can be defined by joint moment cost functions which describe the optimal relationship between pedalling rate and bicycle-rider geometry for any given power level. In a task where power level changes, variations in pedalling rate may result in different optimum values contributing to bicycle-rider geometry. With the assumption that no changes occur in the cycle ergometer, it may be speculated that lower limb joint angles change. Eight males were tested on a …

Honor And The Southern Lady: The Persitence Of Antebellum Ideology Among Elite Southern Women, 1820-1877, Joan Meyer
Honor And The Southern Lady: The Persitence Of Antebellum Ideology Among Elite Southern Women, 1820-1877, Joan Meyer
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Honor and the Southern Lady: The Persistence of Antebellum Ideology Among Elite Southern Women, 1820-1877 investigates whether the war permanently changed elite white women's legal, economic and social status, gender relations and race relations. Southern honor and slavery were the social and economic basis of the hierarchical order of antebellum Southern life affecting women's lives and worldview. The war forced elite women to assume a greater responsibility which resulted in a more independent self-image and in more difficult race relations. Southern life changed because of post-war economic deprivation and emancipation, but Southern culture, including its hierarchy, remained. Elite women's preceptions …
Moral Authority Of Juries: A Forgotten Aspect Of Citizenship, Mary B Beganyi
Moral Authority Of Juries: A Forgotten Aspect Of Citizenship, Mary B Beganyi
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the ethical and historical foundations for a Fully Informed Jury Amendment, legislation that recognizes the "nullification" power of the jury. The ethical discussion focuses on the dual role of the jury deliberation process paralleling the distinction between natural law and legalism. Hobbesian equity is contrasted with Aristotelian equity to further discussion of the ethical rationale for acknowledging a juror's duty to act according to his conscience for the sake of justice. The historical tradition of "trial by jury" as a political process is traced from its inception by Henry II through the present with emphasis on the …

Transition To Parenthood: The Effect Of Division Of Labor Discrepancies On Marital Satisfaction, Alison Paige Done
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In a longitudinal study of couples during the transition to first time parenthood, I examined several hypotheses regarding expectations and the division of labor between spouses. Seventy couples expecting the birth of their first baby filled out questionnaires late in pregnancy and three months postpartum. Before the birth of their babies an experimental group participated in a marital skills training workshop. Results indicated that husbands' and wives' expectations about the post-birth division of labor differed significantly from actual post-birth division of labor. This discrepancy affected marital satisfaction for wives but not for their husbands. The discrepancy also affected spouses' satisfaction …

The Second Gulf War further eroded the …
Visibility Properties Of Polygons, David Bruce Glasser
Visibility Properties Of Polygons, David Bruce Glasser
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Two problems dealing with visibility in the interior of a polygon are investigated. We present a linear time algorithm for computing the stair-case visibility polygon from a point inside a simple polygon, which is optimal within a constant factor. We show that the problem of locating the minimum number of 90{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}-flood-lights to illuminate the interior of a simple polygon is NP-complete. We also discuss the generalization of the above results.
Agency Without An Adversary: The Cia And Covert Actions In The Nineteen-Eighties And Beyond, Edward Alexander Gibbs
Agency Without An Adversary: The Cia And Covert Actions In The Nineteen-Eighties And Beyond, Edward Alexander Gibbs
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The CIA and its covert actions have been oft criticized. After serious Congressional oversight was established in 1976-77 (The Year of Intelligence) covert actions by the Agency tapered off. Did this mean the loss of a powerful tool because of Congressional meddling in foreign affairs or simply the retiring of outmoded practices? Have covert actions conducted in the 1980s including Afghanistan and Nicaragua been successful and will they need to continue now that the United States has become the sole superpower? Proposals to drastically restructure the CIA such as those of Daniel Patrick Moynihan are examined. The methodology will include …
Self-Interest, National Interest And The Political Leader's Responsibility, Joe Gumiensky
Self-Interest, National Interest And The Political Leader's Responsibility, Joe Gumiensky
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The two major schools of thought on international relations in the United States are the realists and the internationalists (often called utopians). Both have a long history in Anglo-American thinking on foreign affairs but the internationalists have taken a back seat to the realists since World War II. Internationalists have called for international cooperation in the interests of humanity while the realists have emphasized self-interest and national power. An examination of the formation of the Panama Canal Treaties shows that neither school is adequate in explaining how national interest is defined. Instead, national interest is the result of a more …

A Space Focused Ion Time Of Flight Mass Spectrometer, And Spectroscopy Of Hydrogen Chloride, Deuterium Chloride, And Hydrogen Sulfide At "Hard" X-Ray Energies, David Linnemann Hansen
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A space-focused ion time-of-flight mass spectrometer was used to study the relaxation dynamics of HCl, DCl, and H{dollar}\sb2{dollar}S following the excitation of a K-shell electron using synchrotron radiation. On resonance, fragmentation of the molecule involving neutral dissociation of hydrogen was found to be a significant decay channel, thus raising questions of how effectively dissociation competes with Auger decay in the relaxation process. In addition, a space-focused ion time-of-flight mass spectrometer was constructed to be optimized for use at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley, California. Peaks with less than 1 ns full-width at half-maximum have been observed.

The principal stress patterns are measured by both methods, and the stress concentration factors are calculated at predetermined points. Results …
Estimation Of Pm-10 From Vacant Lands In The Las Vegas Valley, Joe Alvin Haun
Estimation Of Pm-10 From Vacant Lands In The Las Vegas Valley, Joe Alvin Haun
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Las Vegas Valley is a serious nonattainment area for suspended particulate matter less than 10 microns in aerodynamic diameter (PM-10). The question is whether the amount of fine particulates less than 10 {dollar}\mu{dollar}m in the soil can be used to predict the amount of PM-10 entering the air stream during a wind erosion event. Over one hundred sixty soil samples were analyzed for soil particle size distribution, and a portable wind tunnel was constructed and operated in the field on fifty-two sites; The study sites covered seven of the nine major …
Energy Flow In Nonlinear Circuits, Jianzhong Jiang
Energy Flow In Nonlinear Circuits, Jianzhong Jiang
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Apparent power and reactive power are two critical quantities in energy flow studies in electrical power systems. Existing definitions for these terms work well when both voltages and currents are sinusoidal with respect to time. However, both apparent and reactive power have no physical meaning. When these physically unclarified quantities are applied to non-sinusoidal systems, the following questions related to power flow remain not fully answered to date. What do these quantities really mean? Is it fair to bill customers based on the measurement of physically not meaningful quantities? What is the efficient way, both economical and technical, to compensate …
Adaptive Restoration Of Text Images Containing Touching And Broken Characters, Venugopal Kalluri
Adaptive Restoration Of Text Images Containing Touching And Broken Characters, Venugopal Kalluri
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
For document processing systems, automated data entry is generally performed by optical character recognition (OCR) systems. To make these systems practical, reliable OCR systems are essential. However, distortions in document images cause character recognition errors, thereby, reducing the accuracy of OCR systems. In document images, most OCR errors are caused by broken and touching characters. This thesis presents an adaptive system to restore text images distorted by touching and broken characters. The adaptive system uses the distorted text image and the output from an OCR system to generate the training character image. Using the training image and the distorted image, …

The principle objective of this research was to determine whether pozzolanic cement is a suitable material for permanently encasing high-level radioactive waste (HLW) and spent-nuclear fuel (SNF) in disposal canisters. This particular cement was produced by mixing lime or portland cement with volcanic tuff, a natural pozzolanic material extracted from Yucca Mountain, Nevada; Portland-pozzolan and lime-pozzolan mixtures were created, analyzed and tested for compressive strength. In addition, the pH of several mixtures was monitored and the values recorded periodically over the first eight days of …
Rediscovering Frank O'Connor, John Connors Kerrigan
Rediscovering Frank O'Connor, John Connors Kerrigan
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
"Minor" twentieth-century Irish writers such as Frank O'Connor have largely been neglected by a critical era which favors longer, more experimental fiction, following James Joyce's models. Both in practice and in theory, Frank O'Connor set standards for the modern short story beyond its current misconception as "a narrative form shorter than the novel." Still, as a master of his genre and a significant contributor to his nation's literary renaissance, Frank O'Connor's reputation has faded in recent years; This thesis will attempt to account for the decline in O'Connor's reputation and to reexamine his artistry in terms of his range and …
