A Search For Primitive Voice In Post-Modern Theatre, Lucinda Jane Neal
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the influences of primitive vocal delivery on Post-Modern Theatre. Beginning with a review of the work of three directors: Jerzy Grotowski, Peter Brook, and Richard Schechner; the thesis moves to a case study of a 1991 production of Macbeth where primary research is documented. Focusing on the production of a language based on primitive culture, the theatrical community is furnished with a vocabulary of sound/communication that may be implemented for Macbeth's Weird Sisters. Finally, the thesis directs the use of primitive vocal scoring, like musical transcription, toward a future outlook at similar projects.
Automated Robotics System For Nuclear Waste Handling (Hardware And Software), William Michael O'Donnell
Automated Robotics System For Nuclear Waste Handling (Hardware And Software), William Michael O'Donnell
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Hazardous materials handling involves the use of robotics manipulators, which are controlled by operators outside a sealed environment. The operator's reduced vision and decreased dexterity causes slower job performance and fatigue, which ultimately leads to mistakes. These mistakes can be dangerous, expensive, and time consuming to clean up. Thus, the goal of this thesis is to lay the foundation for a safety system that could be implemented in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plan (WIPP) at Argonne National Labs West (ANLW). The safety system should both reduce operator error and prevent costly mistakes; The system consists of a computer and accompanying …

Packrat Middens: A Tool For Environmental Reconstruction And Human Adaptation Analysis, Polly Ann Sullivan
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Vegetal remains from radiocarbon-dated ancient packrat middens were used to develop an early and middle Holocene paleoclimate sequence from the Mojave Desert. Identified species from both modern and ancient middens were tabulated by elevation range based on modern analogs to estimate the modern equivalent of the elevations of ancient middens. Differences of these reconstructed vegetation elevations relative to modern elevations of vegetation are ordered chronologically, after correction for modern midden data, creating a paleoclimate reconstruction. The reliably-dated history of human occupation at four sites on Fort Irwin in the Mojave desert are compared with the paleoclimate reconstruction for an evaluation …

Grant: "The Tanner Boy" And Reconstruction, Leslie Jonathan Mcnamara
Grant: "The Tanner Boy" And Reconstruction, Leslie Jonathan Mcnamara
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Reconstruction, as viewed by historians, is usually divided into two distinct periods, "Presidential" and "Congressional," each controlled by a different branch of the United States Government; This approach leaves one major question unanswered: What of Grant, "the tanner boy," and Reconstruction? After all, President Ulysses S. Grant was elected to the office of President of the United States in 1868, and served in that capacity from March 4, 1869, until March 4, 1877, when Rutherford B. Hayes assumed office; Grant: "The Tanner Boy" and Reconstruction answers this question and determines why Grant has been deemed less important than Lincoln, Johnson, …

Transport Properties Along The Channel Of A Hemt, Narendra B Balakrishnan
Transport Properties Along The Channel Of A Hemt, Narendra B Balakrishnan
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In the theoretical modeling of a high electron mobility transistor (HEMT), it is inherently assumed that the variation of quantum confinement along the channel from the source to the drain is about the same and therefore, the transport properties are independent of position and only dependent on the electric field along the channel. In this study, the scattering rates for polar optical phonons (POP), acoustic phonons (AP) through deformation potential and impurity scattering are obtained theoretically based on the Fermi's golden rule as a function of position along the channel for an {dollar}Al\sb{0.37}Ga\sb{0.63}As/GaAs{dollar} HEMT. It is observed that the POP …
Living The Bomb: Martin Amis's Nuclear Fiction, Rebecca L Bostick
Living The Bomb: Martin Amis's Nuclear Fiction, Rebecca L Bostick
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Living the Bomb: Martin Amis's Nuclear Fiction examines the importance of nuclear issues in Amis's fiction, particularly Einstein's Monsters and London Fields. Critical attention is given to Amis's concept of "thinkability," his political agenda and the effect of nuclear weaponry on his literature. Amis's nuclear symbolism is examined and the corrupt effect of nuclear weapons on our powers of creation (literal and artistic) and the environment is illustrated. Finally, Amis's anti-nuclear philosophy is linked with feminism: both espouse pacifism and a reinventing of gender roles in a post-nuclear world.
Hamlet's Objective Of Killing Claudius Fuels Dramatic Action, Charles David Cannon
Hamlet's Objective Of Killing Claudius Fuels Dramatic Action, Charles David Cannon
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Hamlet's Objective of Killing Claudius Fuels Dramatic Action proves that Hamlet's overall objective fuels the dramatic action of the play. The overall objective of Hamlet, for the purposes of this thesis, is to avenge his father's murder. The thesis also examines the structural elements of Hamlet, such as the delay aspects of Hamlet's behavior, and determines how these elements affect the audience. The paper investigates Shakespeare's skillful strategy of scene construction, transition, and the use of juxtaposition and parallelism. The thesis shows how these elements contribute to the movement of dramatic action as Hamlet attempts to achieve his objective. Furthermore, …
William Faulkner's Public And Poetic Voices: A Discussion Of The "Human Condition", Elaine Bunker
William Faulkner's Public And Poetic Voices: A Discussion Of The "Human Condition", Elaine Bunker
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
William Faulkner claimed that his fiction "failed" to show that "man will prevail," the standard that he set for literature in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech. However, this statement and others by Faulkner can be misleading without an understanding of Faulkner's terms. A study of his speeches, essays, public letters, and interviews (Faulkner's public voice) in conjunction with his major fiction (his poetic voice) clarifies what Faulkner meant by "immortality," "evil," "fear," and "failure" and thereby demonstrates that both Faulkner's fiction and his nonfiction do in fact illustrate his belief that "man will prevail.".

Hybrid Force And Position Control Of A Manipulator With An Elastic Link, Randy S Conn
Hybrid Force And Position Control Of A Manipulator With An Elastic Link, Randy S Conn
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis describes the hybrid force and position control of an elastic manipulator constrained by a surface. Based on the inverse and predictive control techniques, the proposed controller minimizes a quadratic function of contact force error, tip tracking error, elastic deflection, and control torques. Applying the proposed controller to a two-link planar manipulator where the first link is rigid and the second elastic, computer simulation and laboratory experiment results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed controller for force and position control and elastic mode stabilization.
The Effect Of Hip Position And Emg Biofeedback Training On Selectively Increasing The Vastus Medialis Oblique In Relation To The Vastus Lateralis, Christina Diane Davlin
The Effect Of Hip Position And Emg Biofeedback Training On Selectively Increasing The Vastus Medialis Oblique In Relation To The Vastus Lateralis, Christina Diane Davlin
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) is a patellar tracking dysfunction usually associated with a muscular imbalance between the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) muscle and vastus lateralis (VL) muscle. The imbalance is most commonly attributed to a weak VMO resulting in a smaller VMO:VL ratio. Several electromyographic (EMG) studies have defined specific limb positions (such as external rotation of the hip) that preferentially activate the VMO. However, there has been no literature to show that preferential activation of the VMO successfully translates into increased VMO:VL ratios with training. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of hip rotation on …
Win The Lead! Television News Philosophy And The Life Cycle Of A Social Movement, Marie Curkan-Flanagan
Win The Lead! Television News Philosophy And The Life Cycle Of A Social Movement, Marie Curkan-Flanagan
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to investigate what effect the evolution of a social movement has on the depth of broadcast news coverage. By focusing on the American Indian take-over of Alcatraz Island 1969-71, this study examines whether a television news story has a life cycle of its own which contributes and/or detracts from the life cycle of a social movement. The Alcatraz occupation was selected because it was the first aggressive and prolonged act of Indian protest in the United States. The foundation for this thesis rests upon the idea that the "lead story" to a television newscast …
