Influence Of Grain Size Of A Porous Medium On The Movement Of Diesel Fuel Due To Water Table Fluctuations, Vasanthakumar Rajagopalan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Experiments were conducted in a sand tank to determine the influence of grain size of a porous medium and residual water saturation on the movement of diesel fuel. Three different grades of sand (#12, #20, and #30 grades with mean grain diameters of 0.178cm, 0.08cm, and 0.056cm respectively) were used in the experiments. A water table was simulated and the sand above the capillary fringe was initially at residual water saturation. Diesel fuel (5 liters) was leaked into the sand, above the capillary fringe. A uniform, symmetrical pattern of diesel fuel smearing was observed for all the three grain sizes …

An Integrated Systems Methodology For Pedestrian Traffic Flow Analysis, Richard Thomas Romer Jan 1995

An Integrated Systems Methodology For Pedestrian Traffic Flow Analysis, Richard Thomas Romer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The typical urban pedestrian transportation system involves three basic elements: sidewalks or walkways; midblock or intersection corner, holding, or queueing areas; and pedestrian crossings of roads, rail lines, or other physical features. The pedestrians on sidewalks or walkways have operating characteristics analogous to motorized vehicles on roadways. Each critical pedestrian element has been considered individually, but not as a balanced system, especially at the most critical link--the signalized urban intersection; In this research, a methodology and guidelines have been developed to analyze existing pedestrian elements at a signalized intersection, i.e., the sidewalk, intersection corner, and crosswalk; with a systems approach …

Adoption Anxiety Among Prospective Adoptive Parents, Stephanie A Robinson Jan 1995

Adoption Anxiety Among Prospective Adoptive Parents, Stephanie A Robinson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Adoption has existed for thousands of years. Originally, the process was closed, i.e., the natural and the adopting parents did not have direct contact with one another. They remained anonymous. Recently, the process has opened up to include an open adoption, i.e., the natural and adopting parents meet each other before the adoption process is completed and they maintain contact with each other thereafter. This has created some anxiety among the prospective adoptive parents regarding the possibility that their contact with the birth mother may somehow create a problem or spoil a successful adoption from taking place. Anxiety surrounding this …

Several experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of particle size, particle concentration, and total flow rate on the slurry distribution and local slurry flow in each vertical slurry heat exchanger tube; It is observed that the individual tube flow rates are highest for the central tubes and lower for …

Hydrostratigraphic Units Within The Alluvium And Tertiary Volcanics Of East Central Yucca Flat, Nevada Test Site, Craig Thomas Shirley Jan 1995

Hydrostratigraphic Units Within The Alluvium And Tertiary Volcanics Of East Central Yucca Flat, Nevada Test Site, Craig Thomas Shirley

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Lithologic and geophysical log data from 46 boreholes in East Central Yucca Flat, Nevada Test Site, are used to develop lithostratigraphic and hydrostratigraphic columns. Non-zeolitized volcanic lithostratigraphic units geologically correlate to hydrostratigraphic units. Zeolitized volcanic lithostratigraphic units are combined into a single hydrostratigraphic unit. No systematic trend of porosity or permeability was found in the alluvium which comprises the uppermost hydrostratigraphic unit. Profiles of mean porosity vs lithostratigraphic elevation for 11 lithostratigraphic units are presented. Nuclear test cavities, rubble chimneys and collapse craters collectively comprise a fourth hydrostratigraphic unit.

Old French Borrowings In "The Owl And The Nightingale", Kari J Smith-Boyer Jan 1995

Old French Borrowings In "The Owl And The Nightingale", Kari J Smith-Boyer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Old French Borrowings in "The Owl and the Nightingale" ascertains the quantity and nature of Old French words present in this thirteenth-century Middle English poem. Patterns of borrowing, whether source-based or subject-based, are identified and problematic words, such as cognates, are investigated for probable language of origin. These patterns are then examined for what they may reveal about the author and audience of "The Owl and the Nightingale." Included is an appendix listing each borrowed term and cognate in alphabetical order with definitions and parts of speech.

A Modern Synthesis Of Faith And Reason, Ralph Wm Thomas Jan 1995

A Modern Synthesis Of Faith And Reason, Ralph Wm Thomas

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Today, modern man is uneasy. The current outcry for ethics in government and in social life reflects a need which has not been met. What distinguishes man as a rational and creative human being are his moral, abstract, artistic, creative, and spiritual ideas. In many instances, such ideas have been declared as meaningless by the 'reasoning' of the natural sciences; This thesis will develop a modern paradigm that will synthesize subjective values coming from the 'faith' side of rational beings with the objective values obtained from their objective (abstract reasoning) side of themselves; The paradigm will be illustrated by applying …

The Paper Tiger And Its Predecessors: An Ethnologic History Of The American Indian Religious Freedom Act, Daniel Spencer Wall

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The American Indian Religious Freedom Act has proven to be a terrible disappointment for the Indians all across the country. This act presupposed an analogy between Native American ceremonial practices and Euro-American religions, but Native American ceremonies involve a broader range social institutions than Euro-American "religion." Hence, the analogy between Indian ceremonies and Euro-American religions broke down after passage of the act, and Indians failed to receive the legal remedies sought under its provisions. The following is an attempt to address the problems associated with this act by examining the historical development of a Native American rhetoric of religious freedom …

Risky Business: Moral Arguments Againts The Nuclear Waste Policy Act Amendments Of 1987 Can Consent Be Engineered?, Mary Manning Whitaker Jan 1995

Risky Business: Moral Arguments Againts The Nuclear Waste Policy Act Amendments Of 1987 Can Consent Be Engineered?, Mary Manning Whitaker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Risky Business: Moral Arguments Against the Nuclear Waste Policy Act Amendments of 1987, Can Consent Be Engineered? asks the moral and ethical questions of assigning risk. In a democracy a fundamental principle for imposing risk is obtaining the consent of the governed. In the case of a proposed high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, Congress has ignored this basic principle. An unwilling population in a politically weak state has been forced to bear the burden from highly radioactive spent fuel from nuclear power reactors operating in the majority of states. The State of Nevada does not reap the …

Self-Stabilizing Sorting Algorithms, Joseph Chacko Jan 1995

Self-Stabilizing Sorting Algorithms, Joseph Chacko

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A distributed system consists of a set of machines which do not share a global memory. Depending on the connectivity of the network, each machine gets a partial view of the global state. Transient failures in one area of the network may go unnoticed in other areas and may cause the system to go to an illegal global state. However, if the system were self-stabilizing, it would be guaranteed that regardless of the current state, the system would recover to a legal configuration in a finite number of moves; The traditional way of creating reliable systems is to make redundant …

Quality Judgment: Toward The "Essentially Human" In Ethics And Policy, Kenneth Wayne Johnson Jan 1995

Quality Judgment: Toward The "Essentially Human" In Ethics And Policy, Kenneth Wayne Johnson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis describes a framework, a component of a larger paradigm, designed to improve the thinking, planning, and acting of individuals within society. It is based upon factors of human existence that most can agree are fundamental to pursuing matters of importance, however disparately we may see them. Assuming that human choice is a function of consciousness and compassion--it argues that insight from ethics and policy studies can be improved if founded upon an understanding of the implications of the full development and use of the essential human capacities that underlie consciousness and compassion: critical and creative thinking; communicating in …

Evaluation Of Work Motivation Factors Among Management And Employees In Food And Beverage Departments In International Tourist Hotels In Taiwan, Pearl Lin Jan 1995

Evaluation Of Work Motivation Factors Among Management And Employees In Food And Beverage Departments In International Tourist Hotels In Taiwan, Pearl Lin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Perceptional inconsistencies have the potential for creating barriers to motivational development because management may not be responsive to employee needs. An absence of a convergence in perceptions may increase employee turnover, thus creating a liability to the company. Breakdown In The Broker State: The Cio In Southern Nevada During World War Ii, Richard W Mingus

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

During World War II, the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) and the American Federation of Labor (AFL) fought a bitter jurisdictional dispute at Basic Magnesium, Incorporated (BMI), a defense plant in southern Nevada. While the CIO concentrated on organizing African-American workers, the AFL colluded with plant managers and conservative politicians, including Senator Patrick A. McCarran, in an effort to destroy the industrial union. Following the CIO's victory in a representation election sponsored by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the AFL and its allies used the newly-enacted Frey Amendment, a piece of legislation which sharply limited the Board's authority to …

Where Are The Girls? Gender Differences In Secondary Science And Math Grades, Jeff Matthew Ommen Jan 1995

Where Are The Girls? Gender Differences In Secondary Science And Math Grades, Jeff Matthew Ommen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

To investigate gender differences in secondary science and math grades, I used a cumulative numerical grade, a method to reduce a single student's many grades into a single number. Subjects were 640 students, who graduated from two small, mid-west high schools from the years of 1986-1993. Gender differences in cumulative numerical grades were not continuously supported in single class tests, in single school tests, or combined school tests. There were instances gender differences in cumulative numerical grade were upheld, however. A definite interaction was evident between math and science cumulative numerical grades. The differences between male and female cumulative numerical …
