The rising cost of transportation cannot be stopped; it must be coped with.

This paper presents an exploratory study of instructional corrections policy in general and the nature of such within one state system in particular. Traditionally, correctional institutions have evolved along two lines of though - custody and treatment. However, the role of the correctional officer has formulated along only one line of though - custody. Due to the all encompassing nature of the correctional officer position, this imbalance prevents, and may even hamper, treatment potential within the institution.

In the early 1970's as the enormous pressure of drug related problems was abating~ the attention of mental health professionals, school personnel, and the criminal justice system was refocused on the problems that come with alcohol. A new phenomenon seemed to be following the drug "scene", the increased alcohol usage among teen-agers and even children. The message was clear: an effort had to be made to prevent alcohol abuse before problem drinking became more widespread.

Publications

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Burglary Offender Characteristics Can Be Predicted: Enhancing Investigation Efficiency Through the Development of Probability Models1," by Chris W. Eskridge.

Crime is not a new phenomenon in American living. For decades, researchers have documented and projected the growth and devastating complexity of the crime problem in the United States, its causes, and its destructive effects on national life. The intense damage to innocent persons, property, and spirit, coupled with the lingering fear of unprovoked, unpredictable violence are indeed familiar entities in all realms of society.

Radical Criminology: A Sympathetic Criticism From The Viewpoints Of Philosophical And Theological Anarchism, J. Anthony Watkins Aug 1979

Radical Criminology: A Sympathetic Criticism From The Viewpoints Of Philosophical And Theological Anarchism, J. Anthony Watkins

Student Work

The point of departure for this work is to sympathetically critique American radical criminology from an anarchist philosophical and theological viewpoint. Most criticism of radical criminology has thus far come from politically conventional and orthodox Marxist sources. Anarchism is to the left of Marxism or scientific socialism and has been characteristically left of conservatism and liberalism. By sympathetic critique what is meant is that this author tends to favor and support most of the criticism radical criminology has levelled against conventional criminology. However, radical criminology is apparently unwilling to critically comprehend its own essentially anarcho-religious, rather than authentically Marxist character. …

The Children Of Inmate Mothers: Policies And Perceptions, Virginia Hronek Burns

Student Work

Recent research has focused attention on the female lawbreaker. Yet the children of the female offender remain nearly a neglected issue. This thesis investigates one aspect of the problem — the services provided by the criminal justice and social service agencies in Douglas County, Nebraska for children of inmate mothers. Children of inmate mothers became a concern of the investigator while working in a local residential facility for female inmates during 1974 to 1976. Several observations were made during this time. First, when sentencing a woman to a correctional facility, criminal court judges rarely exhibited concern over the whereabouts of …

In recent years the administration of criminal justice in this country has become increasingly dominated by the process known as "plea bargaining." In plea bargaining a defendant waives the right to trial by pleading guilty in return for certain advantages offered by the state. The state benefits in terms of the time and money saved by avoiding a trial. The practice is so pervasive that in many jurisdictions fewer than 10 percent of the criminal defendants ever stand trial.

Juvenile Delinquency As A Form Of Deviant Behavior: The Study Of Social Class Attitudes Toward Delinquents, Donald E. Mbosowo

Student Work

Any member of any social group learns the proper ways of behaving in his group. He is informed of what might be the consequences and penalties if he violates group rules. The guidelines and rules of a group, for its members, are referred to as the concept of "group norm." Norms are found in all social groups. Sociology, as a discipline, deals with both the notion of adherence to group norms and the notion of departure from group norms. Some departures from norms are termed "delinquency." Sociologists and others have defined and explained delinquency to be any behavior of young …
