The problem of selecting social service executives by government organizations and social service agencies has long been an important one. Other organizations directing the efforts of people need to know what qualities characterize successful social service executives. Social service executives administer and supervise many activities which involve the time and effort of other people. They should, therefore, be carefully selected so that the objectives of their employing organizations may be effectively and economically achieved.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether any relationship exists between performance ratings of Young Men’s Christian Association Senior Secretaries and their intelligence, personal …

Political Consequences Of The Development Of Russia's Inland Waterways, Count L. Bower
Political Consequences Of The Development Of Russia's Inland Waterways, Count L. Bower
Student Work
The foundation for present Russian industrial development was laid in the period 1925 to 1933. Russians, with the aid of American technicians built factories in accordance with American standards. They installed American equipment and machinery in these factories. At the same time they constructed huge dams and power plants. Russia was then a market for American products and certainly offered no competition to United States industry. This was so, even though it was recognized that within the great Russian land mass lay huge reserves of resources. Few recognized then that these factors could, if developed, enable Russia to build an …

Adjustment Of Displaced Persons …, Vojislav Dosenovich
Student Work
This study concerns Displaced Persons. At the end of World War II thousands of Europeans had been displaced from their homes and countries, either as prisoners of war, slave laborers, or refugees. Many preferred to remain in exile rather than return to their native lands where political conditions had undergone radical changes. The allied forces in Germany and Italy provided shelter, food, and clothing for these people, with the United States pioneering in this activity. The United Nations Rehabilitation Act was directed to care for displaced persons before the International Refugee Organization was created in 1947.
Ethnic Assimilation: A Study Of Japanese Families In The United States And Hawaii, Kazuichi Hamasaki
Ethnic Assimilation: A Study Of Japanese Families In The United States And Hawaii, Kazuichi Hamasaki
Student Work
There are many definitions and possible interpretations of ethnic assimilation. It can mean anything from "elevation of economic status and adaptation to new standards of civilization, to changing of the color of skin. However, in the final analysis, ethnic assimilation divides into two phases, physical and cultural. When we speak of physical assimilation, we immediately think of two or more racees blending into a dominant race and losing all former identities. This theory of assimilation may occur in a democratic country but is most improbable.

Ecology has been defined as "that phase of biology that considers plants and animals as they exist in nature, and studies their interdependence, and the relation of each kind and individual to its environment. This definition is not sufficiently comprehensive to include all the elements that …

The Certain Areas In Which Omaha High School Youth Desire Counseling, Mabel B. Carlson
The Certain Areas In Which Omaha High School Youth Desire Counseling, Mabel B. Carlson
Student Work
Human engineering is a great job. Many individuals fail to do their part in solving such problems as war, crime, and international intrigue because they have the attitude that the part they can play is so minute that their services would have little significance. However, these serious social problems have origin in individual selfishness; in the indifference of an individual to the needs and welfare of others; in jealousies and unfriendliness which individuals evidence in their day-by-day relations to others. People are taught to feel and think about themselves and others; and if our institutions of learning are to make …

An Intensive Study Of The Relation Of The Four Basic Wishes To Family Maladjustment, Virginia Maes Haradon
Student Work
Nowhere more, perhaps, than in family maladjustment is the expression "merely the boy (or girl) grown tall" more apropos, for here we see the current difficulties to be so frequently, if not largely, carry-overs of difficulties having their incipience in childhood and adolescence. As a personal interview unfolds itself, time after time the problem is seen as an accentuation of, or outgrowth of past maladjustment of the individual or those in his immediate environment.
A Workbook For Sociology In The Secondary School, Mildred Surface
A Workbook For Sociology In The Secondary School, Mildred Surface
Student Work
After completing a survey of the teaching of sociology in the secondary schools I find that many teachers feel there is a need for the course on this level. Those who answered the survey questionnaire reveal that sociology is valuable because it helps the student to understand his personal problems and realise something of the problems of society. In practically all the schools contributing to the survey, sociology is a very popular course with the student because it lends discussions that appeal to his personal interests, the survey also reveals a need for textbooks, workbooks, reference material and other mechanical …

A Study Of Intra-Urban Mobility In Omaha, Magdalene Pickens
A Study Of Intra-Urban Mobility In Omaha, Magdalene Pickens

"Mobility" is moving about, from one place to another. The word urban is from the Latin word, "urbanus", meaning "belonging to a city". "Intra" is a prefix meaning "within", taken from the Latin preposition "intra", which has the same meaning. Intra-urban mobility then, is the moving from place to place of the individual or family within the city. This thesis will treat of the intra-urban mobility of Omaha, Nebraska and its suburban areas, for the period of three years, from 1942 to 1945.
Unification Of Lutheran Social Agencies In Nebraska, Walter A. Juergensen
Unification Of Lutheran Social Agencies In Nebraska, Walter A. Juergensen
Student Work
The Lutheran Church is becoming more aware of its responsibility over against social welfare work. However, the very fact that there are so many divisions, also known as synods or conferences, within the Lutheran Church itself, immediately proves a hindrance in carrying out its ministry of mercy. What is the past record of the Lutheran Church in welfare work? Which organizations are in existence which help carry on this work as a Whole? What is meant by Lutheran social welfare work? What is the history of each of the Lutheran welfare agencies found in Nebraska? Is it not possible to …
