Factorial Ecology: Methodological Refinements Using 1960 Omaha Data, Michael Leigh Dean Jan 1963

Factorial Ecology: Methodological Refinements Using 1960 Omaha Data, Michael Leigh Dean

Student Work

American sociologists have had an abiding interest in the causes and consequences of urban phenomena. Afterall, the emergent American metropolis has a certain lure to it, which is no doubt engendered by its marked cultural and social heterogeneity, and fluid spatial and social mobility. Then too, urban problems are highly visible problems; declining and dilapidated areas, poverty "pockets", crime, etc., all command attention from diverse agencies and segments of the public.

An Analysis Of The Influence Of Charles Horton Cooley's Concept Of The Primary Group Upon American Sociology, William L. Ewens Aug 1962

An Analysis Of The Influence Of Charles Horton Cooley's Concept Of The Primary Group Upon American Sociology, William L. Ewens

Student Work

In the history of civilisation, few men have, as the result of their own thoughts, raised themselves head and shoulders above their fellows. Most have had to be content merely to adopt their ideas and beliefs from others. Few are they, indeed, who have penetrated the depths of the unknown and then have successfully returned with new ideas expressed in conventional language so that we of lesser ability might also understand. Charles Horton Cooley was one of these. He did not invent a new silver cleaner or make an improvement on a mousetrap. He merely "contemplated his own soul and …

An Investigation Of The Attitudes Held By A Randomly Selected Group Of Members Toward Their Young Women's Christian Association A Socio-Psychological Analysis, Robert Lee Geisel

Student Work

Curing the last few years the study of voluntary membership in clubs and other social organisations has become a matter of increased importance in the area of social research. Sociological literature contains several significant studies which have focused attention on this particular area of human behavior. Notwithstanding this development, an attempt will be made in this research project to demonstrate that there is still a definite lack of information with respect to several, important aspects of voluntary membership, it is hoped that the findings of this study will be fruitful in supplying some date deemed necessary to increase our understanding of …

A Study Of Inter-Department Mobility Of Workers In A Meat Packing Plant: Volitional Versus Non-Volitional, John A. Ballweg

Student Work

In general, this study investigates inter-department mobility with respect to a representative group of blue collar workers in a mean packing plant. More specifically, the distinction is being made between what might be called volitional and non-volitional mobility. An effort will be made to ascertain to what degree volitional mobility exists in the plant. In addition, various correlates of respondents will be explored and an attempt will be made to determine the relationship which prevails between the correlates and the source of inter-plant mobility.

A Study Of Selected Factors In Predicting Parole Success Or Failure, Walter F. Kleinsasser Feb 1961

A Study Of Selected Factors In Predicting Parole Success Or Failure, Walter F. Kleinsasser

Student Work

The problem of juvenile delinquency is increasingly demanding more and more attention of the American public. Periodic reports compiled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, published annually, continue to reveal an increase in the rate of delinquent behavior. In fact, according to the final juvenile court reports for 1952 to the United States Children's Bureau, juvenile-court delinquency cases rose 29 percent between 1948 and 1952. Budgets also are constantly being increased to combat this major problem, yet it is probably true that man is still the least understood of all earthly beings. This study in parole prediction is undertaken with …

Influence Of Georg Simmel Upon American Sociology, Walter Ludwig Baeumler Nov 1960

Influence Of Georg Simmel Upon American Sociology, Walter Ludwig Baeumler

Student Work

"Contrary to the opinion of both German and American sociologists," says William J. Goode, "American sociology had little influence upon German sociology and German sociology had no influence whatsoever upon American sociology". It seems that William J. Goode postulates an opinion rather than a conclusion to research on the subject of influences of German sociological thought upon American sociology. Even a cursory examination of the recent editions of sociology textbooks reveals an increasing number of references to the writings of such German scientists as Max Weber, Ferdinand Toennies, and Georg Simmel. But if German scholars have made important contributions to …

River Town, A Descriptive Survey Of A Unique Community, Robert F. Simpson Jun 1960

River Town, A Descriptive Survey Of A Unique Community, Robert F. Simpson

Student Work

Since the Lynds first presented the study of Middle-town to the social science world in 1937, there has been an increasing interest in community studies. Many social scientists have presented their studies for the interested reader. The community study titles are familiar ones for the majority of the social science students. Among them are such studies as: Hollingshead's Elmstown's Youth, Warner's Yankee City Series, Redfield's The Little Community, and Lantz and McCrary's People of Coaltown. Each study approaches the community from a different point of view, but each has one thing in common with all other: the desire to present …

A Statistical Analysis Of The Relations Between Interpersonal Perception And Adjustment In Leaders, Stephen Alan Mourer

Student Work

The study of leadership and its relationship to other psychological dimensions has been and continues to be a lively research topic in the field of psychology. The study of leadership raises many important questions that, ultimately, can only be properly answered by controlled experimentation. Who will become a leader? Under what circumstances will he lead? What are the psychological dimensions most commonly related to leadership? What is leadership? Can we train leaders? These questions and many others serve as a continuous challenge to researchers In psychology as well as related disciplines. The Importance of leadership to day was

The Relationship Of Peer Group Experiences To The Social Development Of Boys At The Beginning Of Adolescence, Clifford Arthur Smith

Student Work

One of the most potent influences during the adolescent years is the power of group approval. The youth becomes subject to the conventions of his age group. By discovering the effect of various peer group experiences on the adolescent, schools and other character development agencies can better understand and guide the behavior of adolescents into socially responsible directions.

The Extent And Effects Of An Ecological Invasion, Mary E. Flannigan Jun 1957

The Extent And Effects Of An Ecological Invasion, Mary E. Flannigan

Student Work

America has a people who are "on the move." Modern transportation, communication, decentralization of industry, and crowding of cities have all encouraged a mobile population. In this mobility, all cities include within their boundaries definite characteristics of many neighborhoods. Sociologists by concensus of opinion define a neighborhood as an area with fairly well-defined boundaries, occupied by individuals or families living in close physical proximity. From a social-psychological point of view, the emphasis would be upon the attitudes of neighbors toward each other and of the emotional intensity of the interaction. The specific area selected as the basis for this study …

A Study Of Selected Characteristics Of Committed Juvenile Delinquents In Omaha, Nebraska, 1955 And 1956, Patrick C. Krell

Student Work

Any study dealing with the human variable is a difficult one. With all of his accomplishments in science and technology, man still remains one of the most unpredictable, least understood beings on this earth. It is the endeavor of this paper to shed a little more light on one aspect of human behavior, namely that of juvenile delinquency.

A Study Of The Citizens' Councils As A New Organization And As A Social Movement, John Phillip Larsen Thorslev Jun 1957

A Study Of The Citizens' Councils As A New Organization And As A Social Movement, John Phillip Larsen Thorslev

Student Work

America has been called a "melting-pot" society. Its settlement by people of various racial, religious, national and cultural characteristics, couples with its large size and high rate of internal mobility, has presented it with problems of adjustment such as have faced few other societies. The American governmental system emphasizes the dignity of the "common man" and makes the free flow of public sentiment from the people to their governmental representatives very important. America denies the right of violent revolution and thus places non-violent types of mass movements in a more strategic position than they might otherwise occupy. Large and significant …
