Recreation And The War Effort In The United States, With Special Consideration Given To The North Central Region …, Dean Smith Collins

Student Work

Recreation as a social force is being called upon today to contribute strength and vigor to our nation in its struggle for victory. Through its services to the armed forces both at home and abroad and through the services rendered on the home front, recreation is meeting the challenge of a democracy aroused to action. The average man on the street sees recreation as somthing desirable but not as a necessary service. The purpose of this thesis is to present the contributions of the recreation movement in the national war effort and to hasten the acceptance of recreation as a …

The Negro High School Student: A Study In Omaha Central High School (1935-1941), Francis Y. Knapple

Student Work

There has been a need, for some time, for a study of the Negro student in a cosmopolitan high school. First, to discover from the standpoint of the Negro whether he was being given the opportunities that should rightfully be his and also to determine to what extent he is accepting his responsibilities. Second, to find out if the school was carrying out its part in providing the Negro with the proper subject matter and activities.

An Analysis Of Negro Ritualistic Ceremonies As Exemplified By Negro Organizations In Omaha, Ida Madonna Rowland May 1938

An Analysis Of Negro Ritualistic Ceremonies As Exemplified By Negro Organizations In Omaha, Ida Madonna Rowland

Student Work

This study is an attempt to analyze the ritualistic ceremonics of the Negroes of Omaha. Various interpretations are given to the terms "ritual" and "ceremony." They are often confused and used synonymously. According to the World's Popular Encyclopedia a ritual is an outward act of worship, the performance of certain outward acts, and the use of symbols which become identified with the thing symbolized. Dr. Whitehead says a "ritual may be defined as the habitual performance of definite actions which have no direct revelance to the perservation of the physical organism of the actors."

An Ecological Study Of Ashland Park Community, Angeline Rose Tauchen Jan 1938

An Ecological Study Of Ashland Park Community, Angeline Rose Tauchen

Student Work

The purpose of an ecological study of a community is to bring out various phases of social life as they really exist, with reference to their interdependence upon environmental forces. Few comprehensive studies of the human community from the ecological viewpoint have been made; the field is practically unsurveyed. Human ecology shows a striking similarity to plant ecology in the effect of definite external processes upon life. Because of the bearing of many ecological factors upon the social life of Ashland Park Community, the district offers innumerable opportunities for research in this phase of sociology.

A Study Of The Editorial Policy Of The Omaha Bee-News And The Omaha World-Herald With Regard To Social Problems, Ira O. Jones

Student Work

The term “policy” used in the title of this study is authoritatively defined as “ a settled or definite course or method adopted and followed by a government, institution, body, or individual.” The term “editorial policy” is a limitation of the general term to the “definite course or method adopted and followed” by newspapers in their editorials. The editorials of a newspaper attempt to interpret and to explain the news, or to make the news the basis of argument upon issues growing out of questions of the day. The term “editorial policy” has been defined as “the attitude taken by …

A Study Of The Activities And Opportunities Of Boys In Omaha, William Glenn Sullenger Jan 1937

A Study Of The Activities And Opportunities Of Boys In Omaha, William Glenn Sullenger

Student Work

As truly as the caterpillar takes on wings and the tadpole lungs and limbs, of which neither had any trace before, the boy takes on not only habits and instincts and ways of getting on in the world, but actual new structure as well. Boyhood begins with the second set of teeth; it ends with the advent of the beard and a new set of enzymes in the blood. Neither boy nor grub nor pollywog passes on to the next stage of his existence by any mere enlargement.

Intake In Public Relief Agencies, Myrtle Blanck Larson Oct 1936

Intake In Public Relief Agencies, Myrtle Blanck Larson

Student Work

"Intake" as the world itself indicates refers to that which is taken in. It is a term that is apropos, applying as it does to a department of a social agency organized especially for the purpose of determining whether or not the person who has come to the agency asking for some form of relief, treatment, or assistance needs the services of the agency or presents a problem which falls within the scope of the agency. Intake is the department which gives the applicant his first impression and as such may be either constructive or destructive. A very thorough piece …

Illegitimacy In The North Central States: Causes And Remedies, L. Thomas Utterback Feb 1936

Illegitimacy In The North Central States: Causes And Remedies, L. Thomas Utterback

Student Work

Social investigators are coming to regard the question of illegitimacy as a family problem rather than an isolated problem of individual disorganization. Lundberg and Lenroot in "Illegitimacy as a Child Welfare Problem" state: "Only within comparatively recent tines has illegitimacy come to be recognized as a definite social problem. Yet few topics relating to social welfare have as many divergent opinions. In its bearing upon social standards, especially those concerning family relationships, illegitimacy opens up a large field for discussion. It is a matter of prime importance in consideration of social and moral prophylaxis." The following study on illegitimacy attempts …

Benson: A Residential Suburban Community, Dorothy Ruth Mutz Oct 1935

Benson: A Residential Suburban Community, Dorothy Ruth Mutz

Student Work

Before making a study of the social life of a particular area it is essential to classify the area as to type and character with reference to the surrounding area. Various interpretations are givens the terms "community" and "neighborhood", the terms often being used synonymously. The term "suburb", a comparatively recent sociological term, is also open to diverse interpretation. Thus in order to systematize the variety of terms only those interpretations will be analyzed which seem to apply most directly to the area studied.

Public Welfare Administration In The State Of Nebraska, Ralph Ray Tietsort

Student Work

The problem of successful welfare administration is one of not only helping people out of trouble but one of keeping people out of trouble. Perhaps one of the most difficult puzzles of public administration in the United States is that centering around departments, bureaus, and boards of public welfare. In this field accurate information and dependable direction are eagerly sought by old and new officials alike. Legislative bodies, social and civic agencies are earnestly seeking for information and examples which will secure the most efficient administration methods. Social Legislation In Nebraska, Charles Evans White Aug 1931

Social Legislation In Nebraska, Charles Evans White

Student Work

Social legislation or those enactments which have the betterment of living conditions for their primary purpose is as old as civilization itself, although for many centuries it was only preventative in its nature. A movement for social justice came with the birth of religious freedom and political liberty. The subject was first approached in a scientific manner in 1911 when the Reader's Guide to periodical literature made the first separate topic of social as distinguished from legislation in general.
