Nebraska Rural Poll

This report details 943 responses to the 2025 Nebraska Rural Poll, the 30th annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions. Respondents were asked a series of questions about their confidence in institutions. Trends for some of the questions are examined by comparing data from the 2017 Poll and 2021 Poll to this year’s results. In addition, comparisons are made among different respondent subgroups, that is, comparisons by age, occupation, region, etc. Based on these analyses, some key findings emerged:

Rural Nebraskans are more positive about the current change in their communities this year but are less positive about its future. Starting three years ago, the proportion believing their community changed for the worse was more than the proportion believing it had changed for the better (similar to what occurred in 2003 and 2009). However, last year that trend reversed back to the typical pattern and continued this year. This year, more people believe their community has changed for the better than has changed for the worse. There have been a good deal of developments in this area since the 2023 revision to this Guide. Two are especially notable. The first is the 2024 decision by the United States Supreme Court in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, in which the Court overruled its 1984 decision in Chevron U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc. Although the contours of Loper Bright are still playing out, it is clear that the level of deference given to agency interpretations of the law under Chevron is no longer appropriate. The Honors Community of Practice is a promising form of professional development in honors, where the wide variety of institutions, professional roles, and structures can present challenges to inclusive and relevant programming. The HCoP’s flexible and responsive format allows individuals in different contexts to connect, share resources, and learn from one another. The fluid nature of HCoP discussions, in which participants shift between mentor and mentee roles, highlights expertise in the community and encourages new voices to emerge. Founded in 1875, Westminster University, formerly Westminster College, is a comprehensive, private, four-year liberal arts institution in Salt Lake City, Utah. Westminster has a student body of 1,287, including 319 graduate students; roughly 51% of the student body comes from outside of Utah. Approximately 30% of students identify as U.S. students of color and 63% as female. In addition to over 40 clubs and organizations, the university sponsors 17 intercollegiate NCAA Division II teams. Founded in 1878 as Southwest Baptist College in Lebanon, Missouri, Southwest Baptist University (SBU) is now located in Bolivar, Missouri. SBU is a private, faith-based liberal arts university whose academic offerings include eighty-one majors, forty-four minors, four master’s degree programs, one graduate certificate program, and three doctoral programs. In fall 2024, SBU had 2,101 undergraduates enrolled across four campuses and 608 graduate students. Minority students comprise 16% of the student population, and 65% of enrolled students are female. Founded in 1963, Kennesaw State University (KSU) has grown rapidly from a junior college to a doctoral-granting comprehensive university of nearly 45,000 students. Situated in the northwest suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia, KSU is now one of the 50 largest public institutions in the U.S. and has been classified as a Carnegie R2, a doctoral research institution with high research activity. Although KSU originally served a commuter student population, its average undergraduate student age has steadily decreased and, according to the most recently published KSU Factbook (2024–2025), is currently 21.4 years. The University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL) is a large public research institution located in a diverse metropolitan region. The university has approximately 16,000 students, including over 9,000 on-campus undergraduates; the student-to-faculty ratio is 19:1. In fall 2023, on-campus minority enrollment was 40%, and 75% of undergraduates received aid. UMSL is part of the University of Missouri land-grant system and is classified as RU-H (high research activity) and as a Community Engaged Campus by Carnegie rankings.

Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC), Michigan’s first community college, was established in 1914 and is focused on offering traditional liberal arts and occupational pathways, adult education courses, and skilled training courses and apprenticeships. Academic offerings include twelve Academic Pathways, eight degree programs, and several certificate programs. GRCC had 11,777 students enrolled in fall 2022; 72% are part-time, 57% of enrolled students are female, 40% of the student population are from underrepresented groups, and 72% of the students are considered in-district residents of Kent County.

The Effect Of Participation In A Place-Based Engineering Learning Experience On Engineering Career Aspiration Of Nebraska’S Rural Students: A Mixed Method Study, Samereh Soleimani Babadi

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Masters Project Reports

This study investigates the influence of a place-based, hands-on engineering learning experience on rural middle school students' engineering career aspirations, using Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) as a framework. Employing a mixed-methods approach, we explored how these localized learning experiences shape students' career goals through socio-cognitive factors such as self-efficacy, outcome expectations, goals, and interest. Quantitative analysis of pre- and post-activity surveys revealed significant increases in career aspiration scores, particularly among students from farming backgrounds and female students with initially lower expectations. Path analyses indicated that self-efficacy and interest were the strongest mediators between Place-based learning and engineering career aspirations. …
