Missourian Triticites Of The Northern Mid-Continent, Benjamin H. Burma Nov 1942

Missourian Triticites Of The Northern Mid-Continent, Benjamin H. Burma

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The tendency toward fine discrimination in fusulinid species has made necessary standardization in their study. Theories and practices of fusulinid study are herein discussed in some detail. Four new species of Triticites are described from the Missouri series of the Pennsylvanian system; one species from the Virgil series and two froim the Missouri are redescribed, and the characters of the other five known Missourian species from the northern mid-Continent are shown in graphs, thus bringing together the known Missourian species. Finally consideration is given to the ontogeny and phylogeny of the group.

Relative Drought Resistance Of Seedlings Of Dominant Prairie Grasses, Irene Mueller, J. E. Weaver Oct 1942

Relative Drought Resistance Of Seedlings Of Dominant Prairie Grasses, Irene Mueller, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Recent study of the severe damage to native midwestern grasslands resulting from the great drought was fundamentally an investigation of drought resistance of the various species of dominant grasses and accompanying forbs (Weaver and Albertson, '39, '40). Studies extending throughout the entire eight- or nine-year period of drought, especially those concerned with recharting permanent plots, have resulted in an accumulation of evidence regarding relative drought resistance of the various species (Albertson and Weaver, '42). Extensive field studies on the role of seedlings in recovery of midwestern ranges from drought have added much information on this subject (Weaver and Mueller, '42). …

Swine Erysipelas Infection In Man, L. Van Es Aug 1942

Swine Erysipelas Infection In Man, L. Van Es

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The preceding decade witnessed the introduction and spread within this state of a hitherto uncommon disease of swine. This disorder, swine erysipelas, has gradually become disseminated throughout Nebraska's swine population until it has developed into a major problem of preventive veterinary medicine. Its appearance, furthermore, added another to our list of animal maladies which are communicable to man. The latter consideration may serve as warrant to review what is known about the part played by swine erysipelas as a human disease, to describe its more salient features and to examine them from epidemiological, clinical, pathological and prophylactic viewpoints.

Pressure Gasoline And Pressure Kerosene Stoves, A. E. Baragar Aug 1942

Pressure Gasoline And Pressure Kerosene Stoves, A. E. Baragar

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

There are people who believe that pressure gasoline and pressure kerosene stoves are dangerous cooking appliances to use in the home. Possibly this opinion is, in some instances, justified. Nevertheless, these stoves deserve careful consideration because: they are much more efficient than the ordinary gravity flow kerosene stove; they have insulated ovens; they often have a good temperature indicator, and, what is most important, they cook and bake rapidly. The important factors to consider when either purchasing or operating a stove of this type are safety, construction, and performance.

Aircraft Quality Casting Standards, Robert Katz, Robert Bolin , Depositor Jul 1942

Aircraft Quality Casting Standards, Robert Katz, Robert Bolin , Depositor

Robert Katz Publications

These standards are to be used in connection with the Handbook for Instructions for Aircraft Designers, 8th Edition …

In the radiography of aircraft castings, markings appearing on the film may be attributed to either the condition of the castings examined, or to some details of the radiographic process entirely unrelated to the quality of the castings, These latter patterns must be recognized and related to the radiographic process so that sound castings will not be unnecessarily rejected. Radiographs must be carefully compared with the surface irregularities of the casting they represent before an attempt is made to …

Role Of Seedlings In Recovery Of Midwestern Ranges From Drought, J. E. Weaver, Irene Mueller Jul 1942

Role Of Seedlings In Recovery Of Midwestern Ranges From Drought, J. E. Weaver, Irene Mueller

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

An extensive survey of the degree of deterioration of midwestern ranges was made in 1939 (Weaver and Albertson, '40). Decreases in the basal cover of the grasses from extreme drought, overstocking, and damage by dust were appalling. Basal cover of the native grass had decreased to 1 percent in one-fourth of the ranges examined and it was 21 percent or more in only 16 percent. Little, if any, improvement occurred during the following year; instead certain large areas suffered distinct losses as a result of severe late summer drought. The perennial grasses over large areas in southwestern Kansas, for example, …

Vegetation Of The Northern Part Of Cherry County, Nebraska, William L. Tolstead Jul 1942

Vegetation Of The Northern Part Of Cherry County, Nebraska, William L. Tolstead

Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications

Agricultural practices in the Great Plains of North America are now in a period of adjustment from a traditional agriculture initiated by pioneer farmers to a grazing economy based upon potentialities of climate and soil. The attainment of a proper system of land use has been retarded in many localities by the lack of definite information concerning the vegetation and its indicator significance. In this study of the vegetation of Cherry County, Nebraska, the interrelations between the plants and their environments are discussed, the dominant species are described, and changes in grasslands caused by seasons, grazing, and climatic cycles are …

Physical And Chemical Properties Of Soil Profiles Of The Scott, Fillmore, Butler, Crete, And Hastings Series, Henry W. Smith, H. F. Rhoades Jun 1942

Physical And Chemical Properties Of Soil Profiles Of The Scott, Fillmore, Butler, Crete, And Hastings Series, Henry W. Smith, H. F. Rhoades

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

For the studies reported here most of the samples were taken in the spring of 1940 from the walls of deep pits dug in areas previously selected by surveyors and inspectors as type locations for the Butler series. To elucidate certain points, samples were taken from the upper part of several other profiles, also called Butler, the following year. In addition to this work on the characterization of the Butler series, further data have been collected concerning soils of the Scott, Fillmore, Crete, and Hastings series. Profile samples were obtained from type locations of each of these series. The data …

Alfalfa Breeding, H. M. Tysdal, T. A. Kiesselbach, H. M. Westover Jun 1942

Alfalfa Breeding, H. M. Tysdal, T. A. Kiesselbach, H. M. Westover

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Interest in the principles of alfalfa breeding has increased greatly with the growing "forage consciousness" of the country at large and the more specific interest developed through cooperation in the Alfalfa Improvement Conference. As is true of many other forage crops, information on the breeding behavior of alfalfa is meager. During the past few years, however, the genetics and principles of reproduction of this crop have come to be better understood and it is the purpose of this paper to bring together the available information pertaining to the improvement of alfalfa and to add certain suggestions with respect to future …

Swine Erysipelas. Revised Edition Of Research Bulletin 84, L. Van Es, C. B. Mcgrath Jun 1942

Swine Erysipelas. Revised Edition Of Research Bulletin 84, L. Van Es, C. B. Mcgrath

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Because of the more or less frequent occurrence of swine erysipelas on Nebraska farms it seemed proper that information on this subject be made available in the form of a Station publication, especially written to serve as a reference for veterinarians, who naturally are first appealed to when an as yet relatively strange disease appears among a herd of swine. Hence the text is written in a technical form for the sake of precision. In the preparation of the text the literature of countries in which for many years the disease has constituted a permanent problem has been freely consulted. …

Leoti For Starch, R. L. Cushing May 1942

Leoti For Starch, R. L. Cushing

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The popular forage crop, Leoti sorghum, has possibilities of becoming an important special purpose grain crop for industrial utilization. Investigations of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry have shown that starch manufactured from the waxy grain of this variety has properties similar to those of tapioca starch. Tapioca starch, made from the roots of the cassava plant, has been imported by the United States to the extent of 175,000 tons annually. The chief source of supply, the Dutch East Indies, has been eliminated by the war, and domestic substitutes are being urgently sought by the industry. This type of starch is …

Teachers' Pay In Ancient Greece, Clarence A. Forbes May 1942

Teachers' Pay In Ancient Greece, Clarence A. Forbes

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

One who ventures upon an account of how the teachers of Greek antiquity fared in the matter of remuneration might do well to begin by entreating exemption from such a penalty a the luckless Phrynichus brought down upon himself for his tear-provoking tragedy of the mileton alusis. The Athenians fined Phrynichus a thousand drachmas, we are told, "because he had reminded them of their own troubles."

Generally speaking, intellectual labors in ancient Greece prior to the Hellenistic Age were undertaken for their own sake, with no thought of securing material rewards.2 The dramatists were spurred by competition, but not by …

Parabos Dodsoni Barbour And Schultz: A Correction, Erwin Hinckley Barbour, C. Bertrand Schultz

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

A Bos-like animal, Parabos dodsoni, was recently described by Barbour and Schultz (1941, "A New Fossil Bovid from Nebraska", Bull. Univ. Nebr. State Museum, Vol. II, No. 7, pp. 63-66, Figs. 24-27, December) as a new genus and species from the Pleistocene of Nebraska. Attention has been called to the writers by Dr. E. H. Colbert of the American Museum of Natural History that the name Parabos is preoccupied. Parabos was introduced as a generic name by C. Arambourg and J. Piveteau (1929, "Note preliminaire sur un Ruminant du Pliocene inferieur du Roussillon," C. R. Bull. Soc. Geol. de …

Competition Of Western Wheat Grass With Relict Vegetation Of Prairie, J. E. Weaver May 1942

Competition Of Western Wheat Grass With Relict Vegetation Of Prairie, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Many profound changes in mid-continental grasslands have resulted from the recent extended drought. In the prairies of eastern Nebraska, Kansas and South Dakota, the earlier continuous stands of bluestem (Andropogon scoparius and A. furcatus) have often been greatly fragmented and now occur as relict patches a few square feet to many square rods in extent. Loss of approximately 95 per cent of little bluestem has left the prairie cover very open. Over large areas, except for weeds and a few surviving grasses and forbs, the soil was bared (Weaver, Stoddart and Noll, 1935; Weaver and Albertson, 1939). Grasses …
