A Report On Drosophila Collections In Nebraska, David D. Williams, Dwight D. Miller Jan 1952

A Report On Drosophila Collections In Nebraska, David D. Williams, Dwight D. Miller

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

Until rather recently little has been known of the Drosophila species of Nebraska. Sturtevant (1921) lists Nebraska as one of seven states from which no Drosophila had been reported. Patterson and Wagner (1943) show that collections of Drosophila pseudoobscura had been made in the vicinities of Scottsbluff and Kearney, but no other Drosophila species are reported from Nebraska in their publication.

Insect Types In The Collections Of The University Of Nebraska State Museum, Martin H. Muma

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

In 1948 the insect collections at the University of Nebraska State Museum were placed in the care of the author. Prior to that date curatorial duties were assumed or assigned to full time teaching or research staff members. As would be expected under the latter circumstances, the organization of study material and types was neglected in many families and genera. Since 1948 type material, because of its intrinsic value, has received considerable attention. All primary and representative secondary types have been assembled in three museum cases and one slide cabinet for curatorial and study convenience.

Audio Census Of Some Wisconsin Game Birds, Donald R. Thompson, Charles W. Lemke

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Audio censuses of Wisconsin game birds were commenced in 1948, and now include the bobwhite quail, the pheasant and the ruffed grouse, in the order in which censuses were introduced.

Briefly, audio censuses are based on the characteristic sounds given by the male of the species concerned during the breeding season. An observer strategically located at a station, or stations in the field tallies the number of individuals calling, and/or the number of calls heard during a given time period.

In Wisconsin, only the transect method is used, with the observer following a given route and making listening stops of …

Red-Backed Vole With A Tick Attached Near Eyeball, H. L. Gunderson Jan 1952

Red-Backed Vole With A Tick Attached Near Eyeball, H. L. Gunderson

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

A red-backed vole (Clethrionomys gapperi), with a tick attached to or just under the inner corner of the eyelid at the canthus, was caught in a live trap on July 11, 1961. This is an unusual place of attachment and it is difficult to understand how the tick could have become attached at a point where it could easily be scratched off by either the forefoot or hind foot of the vole.

Reconnaissance Of The Geology And Ground-Water Resources Of The Pumpkin Creek Area, Morrill And Banner Counties, Nebraska With A Section On The Chemical Quality Of The Water, H. M. Babcock, F. N. Visher, W. J. Durum

United States Geological Survey: Publications

The area described in this report includes the eastern, or lower, end of the valley of Pumpkin Creek and is in Morrill and Banner Counties, in western Nebraska. A reconnaissance of the geology and ground-water resources of the area was made to determine the possibilities of developing ground-water supplies for irrigation.

Rocks that crop out in the Pumpkin Creek area are shown on a geologic map that is included in the report. They range in age from Oligocene to Recent and consist of the Brule, Arikaree, and Ogallala formations and of the alluvium. The Chadron formation, of Oligocene age, underlies …
