The Nebraska Sandhill Lakes: Their Characteristics And Fisheries Management Problems, D. B. Mccarraher Jan 1960

The Nebraska Sandhill Lakes: Their Characteristics And Fisheries Management Problems, D. B. Mccarraher

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

A brief look at the map of Nebraska will readily point out the obvious fact that the sandhills comprise a considerable portion of the land area of the state. To be more precise, an area encompassing around 20,000 square miles or about one quarter of the total state area. This is indeed a vast prairie region long noted for its fine cattle and native hay crops. It is a region of vegetative dune sandhills, sandy basins and valleys, exposed ground water, spring seep lakes and marshes. Since much is already known concerning the land portion of the sandhills it is …

Coordination Of Mosquito Control And Wildlife Management Some Effects Of Mosquito Larviciding And The New Pesticides On Fishes, Clarence M. Tarzwell Jan 1960

Coordination Of Mosquito Control And Wildlife Management Some Effects Of Mosquito Larviciding And The New Pesticides On Fishes, Clarence M. Tarzwell

United States Public Health Resources

It is apparent to one who has been brought up on a farm and who has worked in the fields of mosquito control, fisheries management, and water pollution abatement, that there are some conflicts of interest and methods used in these fields. There are, however, many common interests and areas in which the aims and objectives coincide. All too often in the past. there has been a failure to explore and stress common interests and a tendency to emphasize conflicting interests. Our present age of specialization in, training and interest is in part responsible for this situation. In order to …

Hybridization In The Anatide And Its Taxonomic Implications, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 1960

Hybridization In The Anatide And Its Taxonomic Implications, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

Without doubt, waterfowl of the family Anatidae have provided the greatest number and variety of bird hybrids originating from both natural and captive conditions. The recent compilation by Gray (1958) has listed approximately 400 interspecies hybrid combinations in this group, which are far more than have occurred in any other single bird family. Such a remarkable propensity for hybridization in this group provides a great many possibilities for studying the genetics of speciation and the genetics of plumage and behavior, and it also provides a valuable tool for judging species relationships. It may generally be said that the more closely …

48th Annual Feeders Day Progress Report: Improving Beef Production Through Nutrition And Management, W. V. Lamber, E. F. Frolik Jan 1960

48th Annual Feeders Day Progress Report: Improving Beef Production Through Nutrition And Management, W. V. Lamber, E. F. Frolik

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

As we start a new decade it is appropriate to ponder for a moment on where we have been and where we go from here.

The past ten years have seen significant changes in all phases of animal agriculture. Probably the most spectacular changes came in the area of nutrition. During the past ten years significant advances were made in our knowledge on mineral and vitamin nutrition. Additional facts on the old problem of the ratio of concentrates to roughage have been added. Ways of supplementing poor quality roughage to obtain optimum production were learned.

The General Power Of Appointment As An Interest In Property, Lawrence Berger Jan 1960

The General Power Of Appointment As An Interest In Property, Lawrence Berger

Nebraska Law Review

The commentators in the field of future interests have, for the most part, agreed there is a trend in the law toward piercing the fictional veil that a general power is a mere mandate or authority to dispose of property. The purpose of this article is to explore, in summary, the historical basis for the general power and the reasons for the current prevalence of its use. The question of whether the general power does have peculiar characteristics and advantages in intent effectuation is evaluated in more detail. In addition, the law as it relates to the rights of third …

Genetic Blocks In The Synthesis Of Coumarin In Melilotus Alba, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins Jan 1960

Genetic Blocks In The Synthesis Of Coumarin In Melilotus Alba, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The influence of the two genes, cu and b upon the level and form of coumarin in sweetclover leaf tissue was determined by assaying 25 sweetclover plants of each of the four homozygous genotypes, CuCuBB, CuCubb, cucuBB, and cucubb. An assay of alfalfa leaves provided an indication of the magnitude of fluorescence not ascribable to coumarin. Approximately 0.2 percent total coumarin (dry weight basis) was found in plants homozygous for cu, which is 11.5 times the amount found in alfalfa, but only about 1/20 of the level found in CuCu plants. Thus, the cu-effected …

The Number Of Daughter-Dam Pairs Needed For Estimating Heritability, L. Dale Van Vleck, S. R. Searle, C. R. Henderson Jan 1960

The Number Of Daughter-Dam Pairs Needed For Estimating Heritability, L. Dale Van Vleck, S. R. Searle, C. R. Henderson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The number of observations required to obtain reliable estimates of heritability has been discussed recently for the method which utilizes the intra-class correlation coefficient. Wearden (1959) has made use of the power function to determine the number of progeny per sire needed to estimate heritability. Tallis (1959), utilizing the formula for the variance of the intra-class correlation coefficient as given by Fisher (1952), has discussed the minimum number of offspring necessary for estimating heritability with a given accuracy.

Classification And Evolutionary Relationships Of The Sea Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 1960

Classification And Evolutionary Relationships Of The Sea Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

When Delacour and Mayr (1945) revised the classification of the Anatidae, one of their major innovations was the erection of the tribe Mergini, the members of which had in the past (Peters, 193 1) been included in the subfamilies Nyrocinae (=Aythyinae) and Merginae. This separation of the true pochards (Netta and Aythya) from the other diving ducks and the merging of the merganser group into the same tribe with the goldeneyes (Bucephala) and other sea ducks has been accepted by most authorities and incorporated into recent classifications such as those of Kagelmann (1951) and Boetticher ( …

The Dispersal And Acclimatization Of The Muskrat, Ondatra Zibethicus (L.), In Finland, Atso Artimo Jan 1960

The Dispersal And Acclimatization Of The Muskrat, Ondatra Zibethicus (L.), In Finland, Atso Artimo

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

The natural range of the muskrat, Ondatra zibethicus (L.), comprises the major part of the North American continent (Fig. 1). In the northern and eastern parts of its range its distribution is more or less continuous, but in the arid west it is very patchy. The species is absent from some areas which, according to Storer (1938), are suitable for it. This writer assumes (op.cit. pp. 159-160) that »Muskrats probably reached some of the now isolated waters of the West during a period when aquatic and palustrine habitats were more widespread, in late Pleistocene or postglacial times. With subsequent contraction …
