Pleistocene Formations In Indiana, William J. Wayne Jan 1963

Pleistocene Formations In Indiana, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The system of stratigraphic classification used in North America for all sedimentary rock units except nonmarine deposits of the Pleistocene Series established groups, formations, and smaller units based on objectively determined characteristics of the rocks and not on geomorphology or subjective features, such as geologic time. Not all students of the nonmarine Pleistocene have kept these two kinds of units distinct from each other. The Pleistocene sediments of Indiana and the surrounding States are continental in origin rather than marine, and thus they show far less lithologic homogeneity than sediments and rocks of marine origin. Nevertheless, these Pleistocene sediments can …

The Wonderful Prairie Sod, J. E. Weaver Jan 1963

The Wonderful Prairie Sod, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

A magnificent expanse of grassland occupied the central part of North America before the coming of the white man. This paper is the result of a continuous investigation which began in 1916 of a large portion of this prairie. The area of most intensive study included approximately the western third of Iowa and the eastern third of Nebraska. The advent of the great drought of 1933 to 1940 offered an exceptional opportunity to ascertain the responses of native plants to extremely adverse conditions. The role played by rhizomes of grasses in endurance of drought and frequently their recovery from it …

Behavioral Isolating Mechanisms In The Family Anatidae, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 1963

Behavioral Isolating Mechanisms In The Family Anatidae, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

The ducks, geese, and swans present a host of species-recognition and isolating-mechanism problems that are equaled by few other groups of birds. As a family, the Anatidae have provided the greatest number of interspecific hybridization records of any avian family (see Gray, 1958, and Johnsgard, 1960a) both in captivity and under natural conditions. A surprising number of these hybrids have proved to be fertile, even when obtained between what appear to be well-marked genera. This remarkable capacity for hybridization indicates that isolating mechanisms must be operating effectively if species are to retain their integrity under natural conditions. Since genetic isolation …

On Science And Social Science, Robert Katz Jan 1963

On Science And Social Science, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

There are many definitions of science, and these are commonly based on literary and social usage rather than on the technical problem of distinguishing different areas of scholarship. To evolve an adequate definition we shall attempt to extract common elements from physics, biology, chemistry, geology, and astronomy, from those fields which are commonly called sciences. Any acceptable definition of science must be equally applicable to all of these, to all the natural sciences. To speak in the usual metaphor, we shall attempt a "scientific" definition of science.

Comparative Morphology In Nemic Phylogeny, Armand R. Maggenti Jan 1963

Comparative Morphology In Nemic Phylogeny, Armand R. Maggenti

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

In 1945 Simpson wrote: "Phylogeny cannot be observed. It is necessarily an inference from observations that bear on it, sometimes rather distantly, and that can usually be interpreted in more than one way." Certainly this applies to a study of nemic phylogeny where our reasoning is based upon degree of resemblance and subject to confusion by convergence and reversal. Many feel that, because fossil records are lacking, it is of little purpose to indulge in speculation on nemic phylogeny. Nemic taxonomy, however, requires such speculation when it is based upon comparative morphology. Our attempts in taxonomy are really an effort …

Gyrodactylus margaritae from the pearl dace (Semotilus margarita) is compared with known species of Gyrodactylus from North American fishes and described as a new species. The average number of G. atratuli per blacknose dace in the natural habitat is 7.8 (1 to 32) and in the laboratory at the same water temperature after 55 days in captivity, 5.4 (0 to 11). G. atratuli …

Studies On Neogogatea Kentuckiensis (Cable, 1935) N. Comb. (Trematoda: Strigeoidea: Cyathocotylidae), Glenn L. Hoffman, Clarence E. Dunbar Jan 1963

Studies On Neogogatea Kentuckiensis (Cable, 1935) N. Comb. (Trematoda: Strigeoidea: Cyathocotylidae), Glenn L. Hoffman, Clarence E. Dunbar

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The cercaria of N. kentuckiensis was found in Anaplocamus dilatatus (Nitrocris d.) and Mudalia carinata. The metacercaria was found in all fishes examined from Opequon River, West Virginia, except Cottus bairdi which was also refractory to experimental infection. Two species of Centrarchidae, four of Cyprinidae, three of Salmonidae, Etheostoma flabellare, Platypoecilus maculatus, and Trichogaster trichopterus were experimentally infected. The development of the metacercari and cyst and effect on the fish are described. The histopathology initially consists of hemorrhage and muscle necrosis about the metacercaria, followed by reorganization and formation of a loose connective tissue cyst. The controversial adult names …

Introduction

Over the past several years, a large number of references from the USSR, Eastern Europe, and Cairo have been collected dealing with arthropods of medical importance. These references were coded on key-sort cards which made it possible to index as many as fifteen subject areas on one card. The usefulness of this indexing system was evident by a number of medical entomologists who used ___ searching for references as their specialty. In response to requests from workers in the United States and other countries who did not have ready access to the index, it was decided to publish these …

Pollution-Caused Fish Kills In 1962 Dec 1962

Pollution-Caused Fish Kills In 1962

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

This publication is the third annual report of fish kills caused by pollution occurring in the United States. The reporting of pollution-caused fish kills was begun by the Public Health Service in the Spring of 1960 in an effort to secure additional information on the effects of pollution in the Nation's waters, to elicit the cooperation and assistance of conservation groups in the States to help determine causes of fish kills and assist in their abatement, and to place responsibility for fish kills where it belonged.

The Surgeon General asked all State conservation and fish and game agencies to assist …

Helminths Of The Shrew-Mole Neürotrichus Gibbsii (Baird) In Oregon, Robert L. Rausch Dec 1962

Helminths Of The Shrew-Mole Neürotrichus Gibbsii (Baird) In Oregon, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Helminths of the shrew-mole from Oregon are described. They include a cestode Hymenolepis neurotrichi sp. n., a trematode Microphallus aspalacis sp. n., and the third-stage larva of an undetermined species of Porrocaecum (nematode), probably P. depressum (Zeder, 1800), or P. angusticolle (Molin, 1860). Preserved viscera of ten animals were examined. Three were infected.

Development Of Water Quality Criteria For Aquatic Life, Clarence M. Tarzwell Nov 1962

Development Of Water Quality Criteria For Aquatic Life, Clarence M. Tarzwell

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

It is now recognized that water pollution is an important problem, that it becomes more widespread and serious as population and industry expand, and that something must be done if aquatic life resource are to be saved and their productivity maintained. In the past there has been a great deal of uncertainty in approaching this situation and a general lack of understanding of the details and ramification of the overall problem. In the efforts for the abatement of pollution, only a few clearcut objectives have been established. Knowledge is lacking as to what the objectives should be. There is still …

A Modified Procedure For Assay Of Melilotic Acid In Sweetclover1, Walter R. Akeson, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz Nov 1962

A Modified Procedure For Assay Of Melilotic Acid In Sweetclover1, Walter R. Akeson, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

A modified procedure for the assay of melilotic acid in sweetclover leaves is described. The procedure provides for (a) extraction of melilotic acid and melilotyl glucoside by autoclaving the plant tissue in water, (b) hydrolysis of melilotyl glucoside by autoclaving in 1 N HCl, (c) separation of melilotic acid from interfering compounds by paper chromatography, and (d) colorimetric assay of the chromatographically-separated melilotic acid. Application of the procedure to plants representing various genotypes of sweetclover yielded results indicating that the melilotic acid content of leaves from plants high in content of o-hydroxycinnamic acid is about three times as high …

Light Horses, M. E. Ensminger Nov 1962

Light Horses, M. E. Ensminger

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Light horses stand 14-2 to 17 hands high, weigh 900 to 1,400 pounds, and are used primarily for, riding, driving, or racing, or for utility purposes on the farm. Light horses generally are more rangy and are capable of more action and greater speed than draft horses.

Increasing interest is being shown in light horses. Today, there are 2¼ million horses in this country, of which 1.8 million are light horses. It is further estimated that 433,000 light horses are suburban-owned. About 250,000 horses are registered in a light horse breed registry.

Saddle clubs and 4-H horse clubs are growing …

A Pattern For You : Clothing Leaflet 1

Nebraska 4-H Clubs: Historical Materials and Publications

A requirement for good-looking clothes is a good pattern, correct in size and design for you, and suitable in design for the fabric. Most pattern companies base the size of their patterns on a standard scale of measurements which is printed on the pattern envelope. You may find that one kind of pattern fits you better than any other and requires less adjustment and fitting. Tables of the measurements in use by each company are given in the counter pattern books.

The U.S. Feed Concentrate-Livestock Economy's Demand Structure, 1949-1959 (With Projections For 1960-70), James B. Hassler

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Several years ago, members of the NCM-19 Technical Committee on grain marketing research decided to do more detailed research on the spatial aspects of the livestock-feed economy. The major objectives of this study are (1) to quantify the demand functions for the major animal products of agriculture at the retail level, (2) to derive the demand functions for the unprocessed forms at the farm level, (3) to derive the equilibrium demand functions for feed concentrates at the farm level, (4) to estimate the separate annual impact rates of trends in per capita income, marketing costs, conversion rates, and population on …
