University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
1 / Voluntary Associations in a Zone of Transition
This report is a study of formal voluntary associations in a zone of transition. It seeks information on the various kinds of voluntary organizations to be found in such an area, the characteristics of the members, the manner in which people become affiliated with organizations, and the functions that organizations serve for their members. The specific associations studied include such diverse groups as a neighborhood improvement council, an old-age club, and various children's associations. In this study such groups fall under the province of voluntary associations. That such groups are found …

The Effects Of Plant Virus Purification Procedures On Extracts Of Healthy Plants, Sue Ann Tolin
The Effects Of Plant Virus Purification Procedures On Extracts Of Healthy Plants, Sue Ann Tolin
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
This study was undertaken to devise an easy, accurate method to detect and separate various components in extracts of healthy bean, tobacco, and barley plants by using techniques common to virus purification and to determine the effect of some of the more common denaturing and adsorbing agents on these healthy plant components.Conditions for density-gradient centrifugation were selected to give the best separation of normal components, and these conditions were then used as the basis of an analytical method to evaluate the denaturation procedures.
Protoplasmic components of healthy bean, tobacco, and barley plants were isolated and studied by use of techniques …

The Archeology Of The Lime Creek Site In Southwestern Nebraska, E. Mott Davis
The Archeology Of The Lime Creek Site In Southwestern Nebraska, E. Mott Davis
University of Nebraska State Museum: Staff and Affiliates, Publications
The Lime Creek site is a stratified Early Lithic (Paleo-Indian) camp site buried in the Terrace-2A alluvial fill of a valley in the dissected loess plains. Geological correlations indicate an early Valders (Wisconsin- IV) date. A radiocarbon date (No. C-471) of 9524 B.P. from just below Lime Creek I, the lowest occupation zone, must be taken only as a minimal possible age for the site. The animal bones in Lime Creek I are primarily of pronghorn and beaver, whereas those in Lime Creek III, the highest occupation zone, are exclusively of bison. The change in hunting patterns seems due to …

Northern Pike, Esox Lucius, In Alkaline Lakes Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher
Northern Pike, Esox Lucius, In Alkaline Lakes Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
Pike (Esox lucius) were studied in alkaline sandhill lakes from 1956 through 1961. Fry and fingerlings were released in alkaline environments as part of a continuing ecological study of survival and growth of northern pike in Nebraska waters. Survival and growth were determined by intensive nettings at release sites. Chemical, biological, and physical characteristics of each lake were investigated (Table 1).
The majority of the nearly 2,000 Nebraska sandhill lakes may be classified as alkaline eutrophic of the bicarbonate-sulfate group (McCarraher). Salts other than chlorides predominate in these natural lakes supporting a biota somewhat different from inland chloride …

The Interior Department, War Department And Indian Policy, 1865–1887, Henry George Waltmann
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The present study focuses upon a significant, but neglected, aspect of Indian history — the inter-relation between the War and Interior departments and Indian policy. Some analysts have briefly mentioned the difficulty entailed in not having a clear understanding of which branch of government should act upon the tribes. “A cardinal error of the government," one prominent historian observes, "lay in tolerating a vague division of authority over the Indians between the war and interior department." Those primarily concerned with the Army's campaigns against hostile tribes have also mentioned the interdepartmental problem. "The Indian Bureau," one author states with obvious …

Significant Developments In European Corn Borer Research1,2, T. A. Brindley, F.F. Dicke
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Since its identification as an introduced pest in 1917, the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hilbner), has been investigated under widely different environmental conditions. During the first decade, the research was directed largely toward studies on biology and the development of control measures that were cultural, biological, and mechanical in nature. The important initial objective was a delaying action to reduce populations in the infested areas, thereby impeding the spread to the central Corn Belt. Legislation was enacted making it compulsory for growers to practice stipulated population-reducing measures. The spread west and south and the economics of harvesting and cultural …

Development Of Systemic Insecticides For Pests Of Animals In The United States1, R.C. Bushland, R.D. Radeleff, R.O. Drummond
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The first encouraging results in the search for systemic insecticides were obtained in 1944 by Lindquist and his co-workers (53), who found that bed bugs, Cimex lectularius Linnaeus and C. hemipterus (Fabricius), died after feeding on rabbits treated orally with DDT or pyrethrins. In 1946, Knipling and associates (48) treated rabbits with oral and intravenous dosages of insecticides, and reported that rabbits tolerated treatments of lindane and 2 -pivalyl-I,3-indandione at rates that were lethal to mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus), and human body lice, Pediculus humanus humanus Linnaeus when feeding on the rabbits. These findings, made at the Orlando, Florida, laboratory of …

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research
In 1936, the Lynch site, 25BDl, in North Central Nebraska was investigated by a party from the University of Nebraska under the qirection of Earl H. Bell. Preliminary estimates of age measured in many hundreds and even thousands of years created widespread interest. These data, with more conservative conclusions as to their ambiguity, were considered by Freed (1954) in her Master’s Thesis on file at the University of Nebraska.
In 1939, the Arzberger site, 39HU6, near Pierre, South Dakota, was excavated by a party from Columbia University led by Albert C. Spaulding, under the general direction of the late W. …

Papers in Microbiology
THOMPSON, P. J. (University of Nebraska, Lincoln) AND T. L. THOMPSON. Some characteristics of a purified heat-stable aldolase. J. Bacteriol. 84:694-700. 1962-Aldolase from a thermophilic strain of bacteria was obtained in a state of high purity. Heat studies of purified aldolases from cells cultivated at 45 and 65 C showed them equally stable at 70 C for 1 hr. Metal-ion and chelate studies indicated that thermal aldolase is metal ion-independent. Carboxypeptidase did not alter activity or specificity. The enzyme was specific for fructose- 1, 6-diphosphate. Hydrazine was found inhibitory in the assay procedure. The inhibition was independent of pH over …
Translocation Of Coumarin Across A Graft Union M Sweetclover, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins
Translocation Of Coumarin Across A Graft Union M Sweetclover, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Despite several recent investigations of the biosynthesis of coumarin and related compounds in sweetclover, little is known of the site or sites within the plant at which coumarin is formed. Weygand and Wendt reported coumarin formation in root cultures of Melilotus officinalis (L.) Lam. when suitable precursors were supplied. Mothes and Kala concluded that scopoletin and umbelliferone, compounds closely related to coumarin, can be synthesized by root cultures of Atropa belladonna L. The experiments cited gave no indication that the roots are the preferred site of synthesis or that synthesis takes place at all in the roots of intact plants. …

Toxic Hazards In Aerial Application, Paul W. Smith
Toxic Hazards In Aerial Application, Paul W. Smith
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
An analysis of the hazards accompanying the aerial application of toxic pest-control chemicals is presented. The nature of the chemicals, the symptoms of toxicity, recommended treatment, and suggestions for safe-handling, are discussed.
The introduction of the chlorinated, cyclic hydrocarbons for large-scale use as agricultural insecticides somewhat less than two decades ago, marked the beginning of a new era in agricultural pest control. In the intervening years, new chemicals, many of them engineered for specific agricultural purposes, have appeared in rapid succession. The large number and wide variety of these compounds, and their new and unfamiliar chemical and toxicological properties, have …

Side-Oats Grama In The Central Great Plains, L. C. Newell, R. D. Staten, E. B. Jackson, E. C. Conard
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Side-oats grama, Bouteloua curtipendula (Michx.) Torr., is a warm-season grass distributed widely in the native grasslands of continental United States. It has long been considered a valuable forage grass. Its habit of growth and favorable seed-producing qualities have suggested its suitability for domestication as a pasture crop. Investigations which contributed to the domestication of side-oats grama were conducted at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station in a 12-year period, 1948 to 1960. Field trials were carried on to evaluate forage and seed yields of selected strains and varieties from different regions. The photoperiodic responses of these strains were studied under controlled …

Negro College Students' Participation In Sit-Ins, Ruth Searles, J. Allen Williams Jr.
Negro College Students' Participation In Sit-Ins, Ruth Searles, J. Allen Williams Jr.
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Socioeconomic and legal changes in the position of southern Negroes have been accompanied by a changing pattern of race relations and a new attitude on the part of Negro leaders. Data from a closed-answer questionnaire administered to students in three Negro colleges in North Carolina support the hypothesis that sit-in protests are less indicative of social alienation among Negroes than of their identification with or positive reference to the white middle class.
