Hyperparasitism, Michael G. Boosalis Jan 1964

Hyperparasitism, Michael G. Boosalis

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Much of the research on hyperparasitism has been of a descriptive nature, based primarily on studies with dual cultures in synthetic media. The main contributions from these investigations concern the host range of the parasite, the mode of penetration and infection, and the morphological changes of the host and the parasite resulting from parasitism.

More recent studies on hyperparasitism emphasize the effect of environmental factors, especially nutrition, on the susceptibility of the host. Research on the physiology of hyperparasitism has been limited. Nevertheless, this important aspect of the problem should continue to receive increased attention as hyperparasitism is extremely amenable …

An Introduction To The Special Theory Of Relativity, Robert Katz Jan 1964

An Introduction To The Special Theory Of Relativity, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

It is the purpose of this book to provide an introduction to the Special Theory of Relativity which is accessible to any student who has had an introduction to general physics and some slight acquaintance with the calculus. Much of the material is at a level suitable for high school students who have had advanced placement in physics and mathematics. Since some of the exposition, particularly part of Chapter 6, is presented here in book form for the first time, even terminal graduate students in physics may find the material profitable.

The Seasonal Cycle Of Abundance Of Echinococcus Multilocularis In Naturally Infected Arctic Foxes, Francis H. Fay, Robert L. Rausch Jan 1964

The Seasonal Cycle Of Abundance Of Echinococcus Multilocularis In Naturally Infected Arctic Foxes, Francis H. Fay, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

In some preliminary work on the ecology of Echinococcus multilocularis (Rudolphi, 1801) on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, Rausch and Schiller (1956. Parasitology, 46 (3 & 4): 395-419) noted that the percentage of arctic foxes, Alopex lagopus Linnaeus, harboring the adult cestodes seemed to vary annually in direct relation to the population density of tundra voles, Microtus oeconomus innuitus Merriam, the principal intermediate host. With the primary objective of examining this relationship in greater detail, an intensive, long-term ecologic investigation was begun on this island in 1955. Some of the results in the first 7 years are reported here.

Influence Of Surface Active Agents On Some Lactic Streptococci, R. B. Maxcy Jan 1964

Influence Of Surface Active Agents On Some Lactic Streptococci, R. B. Maxcy

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Fatty acids and other surface active agents were used to clarify the relationship of surface activity to the inhibition of lactic streptococci. There was complete inhibition of lactic streptococci in media where surface activity exceeded a critical level. The effectiveness of inhibition by fatty acids, nonionic surface active agents, anionic surface active agents, decyl alcohol, growth medium, and temperature variation was directly related to the surface activity. The surface active agents created an unfavorable environment at most concentrations, rather than acting as a specific inhibitory substance to which the organisms were capable of adapting and thereafter resuming normal growth. The …

Geographic Distribution Of Some Species Of Trichodinids (Ciliata: Peritricha) Parasitic On Fishes, Glenn L. Hoffman, Jiří Lom Jan 1964

Geographic Distribution Of Some Species Of Trichodinids (Ciliata: Peritricha) Parasitic On Fishes, Glenn L. Hoffman, Jiří Lom

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

North American Trichodina from Carassius auratus, Lepomis cyanellus, L. macrochirus, Micropterus salmoides, and Rhinichthys atratulus have been studied by the silver-impregnation method and compared with European species. T. reticulata Hirschmann and Partsch, 1955, and T. (Foliella) subtilis Lorn, 1959, originally described from European goldfish, are herein recorded from North America also. T. fultoni Davis, 1947, from Lepomis cyanellus, Micropterus salmoides, and Rhinichthys atratulus is redescribed, and T. domerguei f. magna Lorn, 1961, described from European tench and gudgeon, is considered a synonym. A Trichodina sp. from the gills of Lepomis macrochirus is described; it is almost identical with …

Economics Of Change In Market Structure, Conduct, And Performance The Baking Industry 1947-1958, Richard G. Walsh, Bert M. Evans Dec 1963

Economics Of Change In Market Structure, Conduct, And Performance The Baking Industry 1947-1958, Richard G. Walsh, Bert M. Evans

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Baking is one of the largest industries in the United States. Its sales, which exceed $4 billion annually, rank it third among the food processing industries, and thirteenth among all manufacturing industries. Bakery products account for nearly $1 out of every $10 spent by American consumers for food. Almost half of the domestic consumption of wheat flour is in the form of bread, rolls, cake, pie, doughnuts, sweet goods, and other perishable bakery products. While this study encompasses the perishable bakery products industry as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, it focuses primarily on wholesale markets for white bread.

The Analysis Of Micro Amounts Of Binapacryl, Epn, Methyl Parathion, And Parathion, Donald A. George

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Aromatic nitrated insecticides can be determined by a microchemical method based on the Averell-Norris procedure. The method is more sensitive than other known methods, and interference from plant extracts is low.

Genotype And Variability In Dairy Lactation Records, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. R. Barr Nov 1963

Genotype And Variability In Dairy Lactation Records, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. R. Barr

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

In quantitative genetics, the variation of individuals within genetic groups is commonly attributed to environment. The assumption is then made that the environmental variances are similar from one group to another. Complications arise in the application of selection index theory when this assumption is not made. The results reported here indicate that in a population of dairy records, the environmental variance is not similar from one genetic group to another. Johnson (1945) and Wadell, Van Vleck and Henderson (1960) found similar results with fewer data.
